CHAPTER 6: Collaboration

938 Words
“I never want you nor Gareth to just introduce a mate to me and to our pack. I’m demanding a worthy one who can lead our pack alongside you,” dad says coldly, his intimidating gaze shifting between me and Eve. Just when I’m about to defend Eve, she precedes me in defending herself. “Just because I’m ugly doesn’t mean I know nothing about politics and business. Plus, who says I’m gonna squeeze myself into your family or your pack?” Her voice darkens as she continues, “I don’t need anyone who will only deem me either insignificant or a threat.” I tighten my arm around her shoulders to pin her to her place when she attempts to walk out of the door, which provokes her to glare at me. I smile at her, impressed at how she’s professionally handling this kind of situation. Dad remains impassive, while Gareth and Harleigh are now looking irritated at Eve. “May I know why you guys are here?” I ask to break the tension a little. “We were told that you’re attacked last night by the witch, who’s known to put his enemies into a slow painful death,” Gareth responds, then his curiosity becomes prominent as he continues, “So,.. how are you feeling? You don’t seem to be in pain?” “I’m not,” I reply with feign confidence. Though it’s true that I’m not in pain, there’s no way I’d let them know that I can’t shift as a result of that witch’s attempt to kill me. I also won’t admit that Eve healed me through her witchcraft, coz they’ll judge her even more. Dad turns around. And without so much of a glance back, he says, “This is your last warning, Lancelot. One more embarrassment to my name, then you’ll have to kiss my throne goodbye.” He steps onto the glass elevator with Gareth and Harleigh following close behind with triumphant smirks on their faces. Eve aggressively removes my arm off her shoulders, and hisses, “Why did you lie about us?! If you have s.hit going on with your life, and so do I! So, don’t involve me with yours!” “Too bad,” I reply cockily. “The moment you saved me from that witch, you’re now entangled with my life. That witch or whoever commissioned him to kill me will go after you too, for sure.” Her hazel eyes widen with a hint of fear at my warning and regret for saving me. I hold her hand. Though she jerks in awkwardness, she doesn’t let go as I direct her back to the living area. I need her more than anyone at this point. Resurrecting someone from the dead is maybe an ability of hers she hasn’t learned yet. Therefore, I’m willing to wait until she finally discovers it. But she has to stay by my side until then! I have to be with Maegan again! “Name anything you want as a reward for saving me,” I demand. A desire for something I can’t name sparkles in her gaze. But she hesitates suddenly. “Money? A better job than your current one?” I ask. Finally, she responds with embarrassment yet with desperation, “Money. A huge amount of money to help me get my revenge against my former pack, the Glacial Mountain Pack.” My brow furrows as my interest piques. “Why? What did your former pack do to you?” She hesitates again, her gaze roaming in different directions. For a moment, the possibility that she’s a spy sent by the Mountain Glacial Pack to me crosses my mind. But,... She saved me! If she’s an enemy, then she could just let me die. “I hate that pack too. In fact, I’m accusing them of being the one who commissioned the witch to kill me.” "If you’ll be honest with me and prove that I can trust you in this matter, I’ll have you join our cause in destroying that pack,” I add. She replies, “I was… their pack’s healer, their Luna’s assistant, who made them millions of dollars. But,... they killed their Luna. And since I refused to replace her as their primary healer, they’re now after me.” She doesn’t sound confident, probably she doesn’t wanna fully trust me yet, which is understandable. I hold out my hand to her. “Resign from your job now, and work with me instead. Name your price.” There’s still hesitation in her. But, eventually, she shakes my hand as a sign of our unexpected yet exciting collaboration. “Kill anyone from that pack, or destroy it anyway you want. But, Alpha Elrod Granger, Beta Victor and Beta Kendra Hawks are mine to kill,” she demands, her eyes darkening, her jaw clenching in fury. “Fine,” I say. “The one I wanna kill the most has been killed anyway - Luna Genevieve.” Suddenly,... Eve gasps, disbelief plastering on her face. “I’m sorry if that offends you,” I say, regretting being too honest with her. “You may have so much respect for your Luna. I’m sure she’s been amazing to you when she’s still alive. But,... not to my mate.” My own fury is summoned, clenching my body inside out as I explain, “Even though the Green Summit Pack had already conceded and accepted their defeat against the Glacial Mountain Pack, Luna Genevieve still stole my happiness away from me! She mercilessly killed my mate!”
