CHAPTER 5: Everyone Wants Revenge

1111 Words
LANCELOT’S POV: I may have been saved from death, but I lost my power to shift! I’ve been trying to shift for a hundred times since coming home last night, but I can’t control, let alone summon my wolf anymore! What did that witch do to me?! I’ve fought so many wolves in my life, the fiercest and the strongest ones, due to financial and territorial disputes. So who among them would dare hire a witch - a creature we all deem as evil and untrustworthy - just to get revenge on me? “Pathetically coward,” I hiss. Out of nowhere,... Dad’s threat echoes in my ears again - “I’m gonna officially declare your brother as my heir to the throne and disown you.” Dad will surely become even more upset with me if he finds out about this! I gaze up at the large portrait of Maegan - my fiancée, my mate, the other half of me - whom I lost just a month ago. Her big blue eyes keep speaking to me, as if urging me to believe that I’ll miraculously meet her again. A tear falls from my eyes, my heart clenching in pain as her memories wash over me again. Am I ready to give up the future I’ve worked so hard to achieve, just because of an unforeseen and heartbreaking circumstance I failed to avoid? Maegan was killed due to the border dispute between her pack and their rival, the Glacial Mountain Pack. I was on a business trip abroad with dad and my brother by the time this happened. I told her to wait for me, before going back to her home and helping her pack defend their borders. But, she couldn’t wait. The Glacial Mountain Pack already waged war against them, so they’re forced to retaliate. My world crumbled when I heard the news of her untimely death. Everything we’ve built together was instantly destroyed - our dreams, our future, even my own life! I’ve been paralyzed emotionally since then. All I want is revenge against the Glacial Mountain Pack, to the point that I stop performing my obligations to my own pack. Due to this, dad starts to lose his trust and pride in me. I’m jerked from my thoughts when my phone rings - It’s the Chief Beta of the Green Summit Pack, Maegan’s pack, whom I promise to assist once they’re ready to wage another war against the Glacial Mountain Pack. His voice brims with excitement as he says, -[“Watch the news now!”]- I turn on the TV and switch to the news channel. My eyes widen in disbelief at the headline on the screen; The Luna of the Glacial Mountain Pack is dead. The cause of death remains unknown. Alpha Elrod Granger has announced to remarry less than a day after his Luna’s death! Is this a trap to lure their enemies into believing that their pack has now weakened since they’ve lost their greatest weapon? Elrod looks so happy and relieved as he declares his new marriage in front of his pack, as if losing a powerful hybrid werewolf-witch doesn’t matter to him. -[“We’re planning to attack their pack a week from now.”]- “No, not yet. Let’s investigate first if they're telling the truth or if it’s just a trap,” I respond. -[“I understand. I’ll communicate that to my Alpha. But know that the final decision will be his, and not yours.”]- As I step into my bedroom to change clothes and start my own investigation, the woman, who saved me last night, stirs on the bed. I almost forgot about her. I step closer to gaze at her face again. I've been gazing at her since last night, coz she looks so familiar. I feel like I’ve seen her before, I just can’t remember when or where. Suddenly,... She frantically sits up, fearfully squeezing herself to the headboard and covering half of her face with her hand. “Where am I?” she asks. “You’re in my penthouse. You lost consciousness after saving me last night. Thank you,” I say. She nods in acknowledgement. “Your name?” I ask. She hesitates, and when she answers, she seems uncertain about her own name. “Eve… Eve M-Madden.” As she’s about to leave, I stop her. “I can sense you have a wolf within you. But no werewolf has the power to heal unless…” “Yes, I'm also a witch!” she says defensively, as if she’s offended. Then,... Tears begin trickling down her hazel eyes. “Are you gonna hate on me too?!” “No, I don’t hate you, especially after what you’ve done for me. But I’m well aware of how our kind treats your kind,” I reply. She wipes her tears. And as she walks past me, she whispers, “Thank you for not killing me while you have the chance to.” “Wait!” I say, making her stop again. “I heard the witches can… bring the dead back to life.” She doesn’t look surprised, which gives me hope that the rumors are true. If she can help me resurrect Maegan, I’ll give her everything she desires - money, influence, anything! But then,... She dismantles my hope nonchalantly, “You’re still alive when I healed you. So no, it’s not true that a witch can bring the dead back to life.” She then turns around, but before she can reach the door, the doorbell rings. Dad, together with my brother and his mate, stand at the hallway as I open the door. A sharp sigh escapes me, sensing that nothing good will come out of their unannounced visit. Gareth and Harleigh eye Eve from head to toe with insulting smirks on their faces, prompting Eve to look down in embarrassment. “So you’ve finally moved on, and brought home a woman?” Gareth says, mirthlessly chuckling. “I know you’re desperate to be dad’s heir, but I didn’t realize that you’re this desperate. Imagine bringing an ugly woman as a substitute mate, so that you can still compete with me?” Even dad’s face is disgusted as he stares at Eve. I feel bad for Eve for being disrespected by my family after she sacrificed herself just to save me. Therefore,... I dangle my arm over her shoulders, and gently pull her closer to me, which surprises her. And without a hint of embarrassment and hesitation, I say, “So what if she's my new mate?”
