CHAPTER NINETEEN Noon the following day, the four of us were seated on a bench in the beautiful, bustling Ala Moana Center, sipping smoothies—avocado for me, banana for Gail and Rey, and berry-blend for Linda. Franklin, who we’d followed from his parents’ opulent estate to the shopping mall, appeared to be on a casual shopping spree. He’d purchased two shirts at Neiman Marcus, a pair of shoes at Cole Haan, and mochi in the food court. “That bag in the window was so-o sweet,” Rey groused. “Thanks for making me leave my credit cards at home.” “You and malls, and those cards, are a dangerous mix,” Linda declared. “You know it, I know it—” “And so do all the stores in here,” Gail interjected with a giggle. “They must love you.” I all but chortled. “Do they!” Rey shot me a withering look.
