Chapter 1: Job Search
My mind was in constant turmoil from the many times that I had heard the words, "I'm sorry, but you are just not right for the job." It seriously made me want to scream at the top of my lungs in aggravation.
I mean I've been trying my very best to find a job somewhere, but, every time that I think that I'm about to get my head above water, I end up getting pushed back under so that I can drown. And to be quite honest with you, I was starting to want to give up and go and find a hole somewhere to climb in and just hide.
As I walked down the street I could hear my stomach grumble. I knew that I needed to eat something, but, I honestly couldn't afford to even buy a measly cheese sandwich considering that I only had a total of two dollars plus some change that I fished out of the fountain in the mall a couple of hours ago.
Trying to distract myself from my hunger, I pinched the back of my hand and continued walking down the street until I smelled a wonderful sweet smell coming from Pingo's Bakery. I followed the smell as fast as I could and went inside and looked around for a bit while drooling at all the delicious sweets that were being displayed to all the customers.
As I continued looking at the delicious treats, I had thought about swiping one. But, changed my mind rather quickly on that plan considering that I wasn't in the mood to go to jail for it or even go to court for bail.
I mean, I could already picture how that scene would turn out like:
"Ma'am you were arrested at Pingo's Bakery for stealing a cream-filled, chocolate covered doughnut. How do you plea?"
"Guilty, sir. But, you see I was extremely hungry, and that doughnut just looked so delicious. That I just had to have it."
"Alright, ma'am. I find you guilty of being an asshole in the third degree and I also find you guilty of theft. Your bond is three thousand dollars, find someone to bail you out."
'Yeah, I could really picture something like that happening to me considering how shitty my luck has been running lately.' I thought to myself and then pulled away from the display counter and went over to where the newspapers were being displayed.
I grabbed one figuring that I might feel a bit better about myself while reading about other people's troubles and woes. And walked over to an open table and took a seat and started flipping through my paper. Which talked more about the latest crimes that had been committed around town recently, and some story about the mayor getting caught with a prostitute again for the third time.
Basically, it was the same old s**t that was found in every Havenfall newspaper. Figuring that I should check to see if there were any job listings available in the paper. I grabbed the rest of the pages and turned it to the back and got to checking.
I saw listings for a maid for hire and a few other ones that really didn't strike my interest at all. That was, however, until I got to the last listing, and started reading it:
"Now hiring at Thomas enterprises for the position of a secretary for the company CEO. Great benefits and pay. Please apply in person, on the tenth floor."
Just from reading that it piqued my interest. I quickly folded the newspaper up and stood from the table and walk over to the cashier and paid for the paper with one of my dollars and then left the store and walked into the main part of town where the company was located, only stopping once to make sure that I was heading the right way.
And after walking for several blocks I finally found the place that I was looking for and I looked up at the magnificent skyscraper for several minutes admiring the architecture of the place. Which really stood out with its massive three stories and white granite siding.
As I continued staring at it for a bit more, I could feel a bubble of nervousness forming in the pit of my stomach. And I just had a funny feeling that I might be regretting this in the future.
I quickly shook myself from my nervousness and cleared my mind from any doubts that I was having about myself, and marched over to the rotating doors and went inside.
The interior of the place looked rich and expensive with it white granite walls and floors that were trimmed with gold paneling. Hell, even the front desk was made with an expensive type of wood.
After eyeing the beautifully decorated floor, I walked over to the front desk to and asked the woman behind it about where I needed to go in order to apply for the job.
Once at the main service desk, I stood there and waited patiently for a few minutes while the young woman finished her discussion that she was having with an older businessman. Once the man had left, I watched as she walked over to me with a smile on her face and said. "Yes, ma'am. What can I do for you?"
"Um. I'm here for the job listing that advertised in the newspaper for a secretary position. What floor do I need to go to?" I asked a bit nervously.
The woman nodded her head and then answered my question. "Okay. What you need to do is take that elevator and go up to the top floor. And once you exit, go straight across and inform the woman sitting behind that desk that you are here for the job."
"Thanks for the help. I appreciate it." I said and then turned and walked over to the elevator and pressed the button for the top floor.
After waiting for the elevator for a few minutes, I watched and heard as it dinged and then opened up for me, and I quickly got inside and pressed the button for the tenth floor and watched as the doors closed and started moving, taking me to where I needed to be.
Once the elevator finally landed on the tenth floor and opened up, I followed the instructions that I was given earlier and walked straight across from the elevator and went into the large, open office area, and walked over to a desk where an elderly woman wearing glasses, was sitting and typing away on the keyboard of a computer.
Hoping to get her attention, I cleared my throat and then watched as she looked up at me and pushed her glasses back up on her face and asked. "Yes. What can I help you with?"
"I'm here to apply for the secretary position that was listed in the newspaper," I replied.
I watched as the elderly woman nodded and then moved her chair back, and reached down and pulled open a drawer on her desk and pulled out a two-page job application and placed it on a clipboard that had an ink pen connected to it and then said. "Here. Take this and go sit over there and fill it out. I'll call Mr. Thomas and inform him that you're here about the job."
"Thank you," I said and then took the clipboard from her and walked over to an open seat and sat down and began filling the application while the elderly woman made a call to her boss.
The job application took several minutes for me to fill out and by the time I got to the last question on the last page, I heard a door open and looked up to see a large man dressed in a black suit and a pair of expensive looking leather dress shoes. His black hair was styled in a crew cut hairstyle and he had a face that would make the gods envious.
He looked over to me and asked. "Are you the one who is here apply to be my personal secretary?"
I stood up from my chair with my clipboard in hand and then replied. "Yes, sir. I am."
He smiled at me, showing his perfect white teeth and said. "Alright, then. Come on into my office with me and we will talk."
I watched as he turned from me and then walked over to the door that he had come from earlier and opened it and went inside his office with me following close behind him. As soon as I got into his dimly lit office, I heard him close the door behind us and then pointed at a chair that was in front of his desk and then said. "Please, have a seat."
Doing as he said, I quickly sat down in the dark wingback chair and placed the clipboard in my lap as Mr. Thomas walked around his desk and took a seat in his chair. I heard him grunt a bit and then watched as he stretched his hand out towards me and I placed mine in his and shook his hand. He smiled at me and said. "I see you're interested in a job here, Miss...?"
"Miss Aimee Woods,"
"Ah, yes. Miss Woods. So, how did you hear about the job opening?" He asked, as he pulled his hand away from mine and then clasped his hands together and placed them down on top of his desk.
"Through the help wanted ad that was in the newspaper," I answered.
He nodded at me and then said. "Can you please tell me more about yourself?"
"Sure. I worked for several years at a law firm as an assistant for one of the lawyers that worked there until the law firm went under when two lawyers that worked there were arrested for fraud. And after that I found a job working at a pet store until I left there a few years ago, and I've haven't had any luck finding a job ever since."
"Alright. Sounds like you had an interesting career life these past several years. So, what I'm going to do right now is ask you a couple of questions and I want you to answer them to the best to your ability. Can you do that for me?"
"Yeah, I can do that," I replied and picked up the clipboard from my lap and placed it onto his desk and then leaned back in the chair.
I watched as he lifted his finger and then placed it against his lips and tapped it against them for a few minutes as if in thought, and then looked over to me and asked. "What is it you desire the most?"
"I want to live life to the fullest. I want to explore the world and see what life has to truly offer me." I replied, confident in my answer.
He nodded his head and then said and grabbed my job application from his desk and looked over it. "I like that answer. It's nice to finally see a person who doesn't mind taking life by the horns."
I smiled at him and breathed a sigh of relief and then watched as he looked up at me and said. "Your application says that you graduated from college three years ago with a bachelor's degree in communications and you said that you used to work at a lawyers office as an assistant. How was that experience?"
I thought about my answer for a few minutes, not wanting to give him an answer that could possibly cause me to not be able to get this job. When I thought that I had a good enough answer I replied. "It was a good experience. But, at times it could be difficult. But that mostly had a lot to do with a sometimes bothersome work environment that was brought on by the constant arguing between the two lawyers that owned the place."
Mr. Thomas shook his head and then said. "Yeah, that's not good. Unfortunately, that happens a lot of times."
I nodded my head in response and then looked down at his desk and read the name sign that was sitting on his desk. Once I was finished looking at it I leaned back in my chair and then looked up to see him looking at me. He smiled and then asked. "How good are you with handling confidential information?"
"I am pretty good at keeping a secret."
"Good. Good. How about working nights here?"
"Sure. I don't mind working nights here, I'm pretty much a night owl anyways." I said and then crossed my legs and placed my hands in my lap.
"Excellent. Okay, I have one last question for you." He said as he leaned back in his desk chair.
"Alright. Ask me whenever you are ready."
He nodded and then asked, "Alright. Say that I extremely hate the sunlight and I need something rather important during that time. Can you bring it to me immediately?"
I nodded my head and then said. "Whatever it is that you need, no matter what time of the day it is. I have no problem bringing that item to you."
"Perfect. You're hired." He said with a bright smile.
I blinked for a couple of minutes, my mind still not processing what he had just said. I looked back at him and asked. "I don't think that I heard you correctly. Can you please repeat that?"
He stretched in his chair and then replied. "I said that you're hired. Please sign your application for me and I'll see you tomorrow night at eight pm."
As soon as he uttered those words, I felt a wave of excitement hit me. I smiled at him and took my application from him and quickly signed it and passed it back him. Once he had it back in his hand, he looked at the signature and smiled, and then stood from his desk and I quickly did the same and shook his hand.
"It's been a pleasure meeting you, Aimee. I'll see you tomorrow night." He said and I followed him over to his office and walked out when he opened it for me.
Once I had left his office, I heard him close his door and I then left Thomas Enterprises extremely happy the stroke of luck that I had just been blessed with and went back home to my apartment to tell my roommate Brandon the exciting news.
