Emma True to my word, I’d set out to make Sophie’s Halloween costume. She was eager to help, so I set up my sewing machine in the dining room. It gave me the most space to spread out, and I’d never seen anyone use the room anyway. The dress was pretty much done; now we just had to make her wings. We’d agreed to stop at the craft store together after school today. Since that awkward breakfast, things had mostly gone back to normal. Jack had a packed schedule this week, so I barely saw him except when he pressed a cup of coffee into my hands every morning. I didn’t want to think too hard about how much I loved that routine.
