CHAPTER ONE: THE CHASE
~AURELLIA'S POV~ The howls behind me grew louder and louder as I tore through the dark forest in a desperate attempt to escape from the wolves that were hot on my chase. If my guess was correct. There were two of them or maybe more. I wasn't sure. As I swept in-between the gigantic trees buried in the forest, my white furs slipped through the branches leaving scratches on my skin I couldn't afford to pay attention to at the moment. My paws dug deep into the damp earth, sending loose leaves flying above and behind me. My heart hammered very hard against my chest as fear gripped every fiber of my being. I was already growing tired from the chase but I couldn't afford to stop. I didn't even dare. I knew exactly where I was. The Night fang pack. I knew the very moment I crossed its boundary. It was a reckless decision I’d made, stupid even. But I didn't care. No I didn't. It's already been three years taking risks as a lone wolf, chasing rumours and every whisper that could lead me to the only thing that brought me here. The Nocturne fang. My mother's voice, though always coming to me through dreams, still echoed in my mind. “Find the Nocturne fang Aurellia… before the next red moon,” I didn't know much about the fang but I knew she wanted me to find it for a very good reason. Three years ago, at seventeenth my entire pack was massacred. On the night it happened, I woke up surrounded by blood and dead bodies with no memory of how everything happened. The mystery still baffles me but on that night I noticed a change in me. A powerful creature, not my wolf, awakened within me. I needed answers and I couldn't afford to let these wolves ruin everything by surrendering me to their Alpha. Every wolf knew Nightfang's Alpha was dangerous. Killian Blackthorn. Even among Alphas’ his name carried weight. Ruthless, unforgiving and very protective of his pack. I'd heard enough stories about him during my travels as a lone wolf to know that being caught trespassing in his territory was not something I could afford. Unfortunately, I'd underestimated how quickly his wolves would find me. I had barely made it deep enough into the forest to search for the clue that brought me here when I heard them. Now they were closing in, fast. Too fast for my liking. Keep moving Aurellia, I said to myself and pushed further but then, a sharp pain suddenly shot through the back of my neck and I almost stumbled. The pain I felt coming from the mark which I've always had since birth. Not now, I groaned in pain as I clenched my jaw Please…not now. The pain from the mark spread under my skin like wild fire crawling down my spine and across my shoulders. I knew what this moment meant. It meant the creature in me was waking up. I couldn't let it take control of me. Not when I was almost out of Night fang territory. The creature only awakens occasionally. Most of the times when it perceives any form of threat around me. I kid you not when I say it doesn't always end well. The last time it awoke was a few months ago while I was being hunted by some rogue wolves. I lost control and the rogue wolves met their doom on that day. I was supposed to be happy with its alliance but I wasn't. Not when I'm unable to control it. The wolves behind me howled again, much closer this time around and my heart hammered against my ribs. I forced myself forward as I fastened my speed. "Stay down,” I wasn't sure whether I was speaking to the creature or begging myself instead. The pain on my mark intensified and my vision blurred for half a second but I shaked it off at once, refusing to give up yet as the creature continued pushing against whatever barrier kept it buried inside me. I could feel it stirring inside me hungry and restlessly searching for a way out. I squeezed my eyes shut for a brief second before forcing them open again. Then, the thought of my wolf Nyx came to my mind. Before everything happened and the creature awoke in me, Nyx was my only constant companion. When the other wolves in my pack whispered that I was cursed because of the strange things they believed about me, Nyx was the one voice that reminded me that I wasn't alone. When I cried, she stayed. When I was afraid, she stayed. When everyone else looked at me as though I carried something evil inside me, Nyx never did. Not until she inexplicably went silent. Completely silent. At first, I thought she was injured, then I thought she was angry with me. Eventually I stopped guessing. It's been three years without hearing the voice that had once been as familiar to me as my own thoughts. We were supposed to be in this together and I missed her more than I allowed myself to admit. Especially now. "Nyx..." I called her name with a tiny bit of hope but I was left with silence. Again. The creature pushed harder again, the mark on my neck burned and I gritted my teeth. There had to be another memory. Something about that night that my mind refused to let me remember. Something that might explain why Nyx had disappeared from me afterward. I just can't explain what it was. A howl sounded dangerously close to me snapping me out of my thoughts. I glanced beside me and my stomach dropped when I noticed two black wolves were now running by my side. Their eyes glowed in the darkness as they chased me with their claws tearing through the soil. Faster… Aurellia, I pushed my paws until they almost burned but my speed suddenly couldn't match up to theirs. The wolf on my right suddenly accelerated, then it shot past me to my front and I skidded to a stop. The second wolf emerged from behind and I slowly turned, realizing I was now trapped in-between them. The wolves lowered their bodies and their lips pulled back, exposing sharp fangs. The half moon above us illuminated enough light for me to see what they looked like. Before I could make a decision the wolf in front lunged towards me. Everything happened at once as I felt something inside me snap. My body moved before I could stop it and the world blurred. A growl ripped from my throat as the creature in me took over. It slammed my body into the first wolf before it could reach me and flew its body sideways. The second wolf attacked from behind. The creature spinned around at once and as my claws elongated, it caught the wolf mid-air, my claws dug quite deep into its flesh before it sent it crashing into a tree. The wolf snarled, sprained up immediately and lunged at me again. The creature met it head-on and we collided. The wolf's claws tore into my arm and pain flashed through me but the creature didn't seem to care about my pain, it wanted the threat eliminated by all means. I fought desperately to control it's brutality but I didn't know how to. It struck again and I heard another whimper before the wolf went down badly wounded as its blood stained the ground. I froze at the mess caused and for one brief moment, I could feel myself returning but it didn't last. The first wolf tried to rise again and the creature stood ready to attack but before it could make a move a loud roar shook the whole forest—powerful and commanding, it sounded like nothing I'd ever heard before. The creature suddenly stopped and turned to where the roar came from. In front of us stood a gigantic 4 feet brown wolf on a low cliff in-between the trees as moonlight flashed on its brown fur. He was bigger than any wolf I'd ever come across and the most terrifying as well. His eyes fixated completely on me and for some reason, my body became still. I knew I wasn't standing before an ordinary wolf because the authority exuding from him could only belong to an Alpha, and It can't be any other person than Killian Blackthorn. The Alpha of Nightfang pack. The mark on my neck burned again and the creature stirred ready to attack but then, something unexpected happened. A voice echoed in my head. “Aurellia...” my breath caught in my throat immediately. I knew that voice. It belonged to Nyx. How… How is this happening? “Nyx?” I called out desperately but I was left with no response and I almost choked to death. “He's ours, Aurellia,” Nyx said softly and my blood ran cold immediately a s I stared at the gigantic wolf a few meters away from me that looked like it was about to devour me. YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
