Chapter 13
“Ding dong” Loud noise from our door bell has awoken me. I try to ignore and get back to my sleep. “Rica darling. Your friend is here for you.” Mum shouted from downstairs. “Who is it? Give me a minute.” I replied Maggie. I dragged myself from my fluffy bed to get freshen up at the washroom. I go down the stairs and I saw Adam at the doorway chatting with my mum. Maggie seems to enjoy the conversation with Adam. “Good morning Adam. Why are you here?” I prompted Adam. “I will excuse myself.” Mum said as she leaves. “I am here to deliver your luggage.” Adam replied pointing at my luggage. “Thank you. You may go now.” I thanked him with a cold face. As I dragged the luggage into my house. “Come, let me help you.” Adam said as he snatched the luggage from me.
Adam carried the luggage into my room. “Why are you here? You could always teleport to my room and put my luggage there as this was what you did last night.” I said in exasperation. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to startled you. I was here just to check if you are alright.” Adam explained. “I’m alright. Just give me some time to think about it.” I returned. “Shall we grab some food together?” Adam asked with doe eyed. “Ok. Just give me 10 minutes time to get ready.” I replied, I can’t reject any food offer. Adam went to the living hall to wait for me. Maggie chit-chatted with him.
I took a shower and put on light make-up. I wore a pink tank top with a blue jean. “Let’s go.” I prompt Adam. Adam was staring at my family photo that featured my late father; his mind seems to be wandered off. I tapped on Adam’s shoulder and he jumped. “What’s wrong?” I asked. “Nothing.” He answered snappishly. “Mum. I’m going out for a quick meal.” I told Maggie. “Alright. Have fun!” Maggie winked at me. I got up into Adam’s red Ferrari and he drove off.
Adam was unusually silent today, his mind seem to be wandering off. The atmosphere in the car was uncomfortable and it was awkward. “Where should we go for a quick meal? I am not familiar with the neighbourhood.” Adam asked. “Maybe we could try at June’s kitchen. My mum and I always visit the restaurant for dinner.” I told Adam. I directed Adam to the restaurant, and he parked his car at front of the restaurant. Everyone in the restaurant stared at us. Some girls started to whisper among themselves. I ordered my favourite steak with a cup of cappuccino. Adam ordered foie gras with a cup of Earl Grey Tea.
“Is Ilona same as you?” I asked Adam.
“Yup. She is a Grim Reaper too. Her family worked for us for centuries.” Adam replied.
“Oh? She could travel like you do?” I asked curiously.
“Yup. She could travel like we do, and she could heal as fast too. The only thing she can’t do is read minds. Only the Smith and Johnson’s descendants could read minds. That’s how we could keep all the Grim Reaper in check.” Adam replied.
“What about Elaine, Duncan and Andrew?” I asked Adam.
“They are Grim Reapers too.” Adam answered honestly.
“There are plenty of pretty girls in the world. Why do you want to be with me?”
“Well… I felt I have known you for a long time the moment I set my eyes on you in the club.”
“Don’t be ridiculous. Where is your scythe? You can always be invisible?”
“We don’t carry a sickle everywhere we go. We could be invisible during soul collection.” Adam laughed out loud. I flushed in embarrassment.
“You see… Grim Reaper could only marry another Grim Reaper. The Almighty Court don’t allow Grim Reaper to be in a relationship with ordinary humans. Smith and Johnson family could only produce one male heir in their union.” Adam explained further.
“What is Almighty Court?” I asked.
“It consists of elders from heaven to govern the Grim Reapers in the world, including my family and Derrek’s family.” Adam replied.
“What will happen to me if they find out?”
“So, you are agreeing that you would date me?” Adam’s eye sparkles with hope.
“No. I just want to know the risk.” I frowned.
“It has never happened before. I do not know what they will do to you.” Adam was dishevelled.
“Oh?”
A gorgeous waitress came by to serve our meals. She glanced over Adam and smiled at him, fluttering her eye lashes. She has been smitten by Adam’s charm, but Adam ignored her, and continue to put his attention on me. After he finished his meal, he took a box out of a blue coloured paper bag. A necklace that sparkles and flashed into my eyes. The necklace has full of shinning diamonds at the end and it is from Tiffany.
“This is for you. I thought of you when I saw this. This necklace has a name. It is Milky Way.” Adam presented the necklace to me with a smile.
“Wow! It is so beautiful, but I can’t accept this, it is too expensive.” I rejected his gift while pushing it back to him.
“Only you deserve this. Nobody else. You saw the milky way with me.” Adam insisted.
“No. I can’t accept this.” I told Adam.
“If you insist of not accepting this then I will just throw it away.” Adam asked the waitress to come over.
“Hey!! Don’t throw. I will take this.” I exclaimed. Adam smiled and told waitress to give him the bill instead. What a moron, I thought to myself. Adam smiled and said, “You know I can read your mind, right?” I looked away and thinking he is a lunatic.
Adam fetched me back home after the dinner. I greeted my mum when I reached home. “Hi Rica. Are you alright? You seem troubled the moment you came back from holiday. Is it because of Adam?” Maggie is concerned. “Yeah mum. We are alright. Don’t worry.” I replied. “Are you and Adam an item?” Mum asked. “No. We are not.” I explained. “Oh? That’s too bad. He seems like a nice chap. It is okay you are still young. There are plenty of choices in the future.” My mum put her arms on my shoulder to comfort me. Huh? What? Adam is the one wooing me. I thought to myself, but I kept in silence as I don’t know what to say. My mum seems to have good impression on him. How will she react if she knows the truth?
