1. THE AWAKENING
Nina Matthews sat on the worn couch in her small apartment, nose buried in her psychology textbook. The lunar eclipse happening tonight wasn't exactly relevant to her studies, but she couldn't help feeling drawn to the rare celestial event. Her roommate, Rachel, had plans with her boyfriend, leaving Nina alone to study.
Nina couldn’t go out with them because the assignment she was working on was due tomorrow morning, which, anyway, was just the lame excuse she gave. She preferred the comfort of her little home to that of the presence of drunk and noisy people.
Rachel had spent the better part of the day trying to convince Nina to go with them. However, she had other plans. Ones that didn’t include the loud, sweaty people rubbing all over her.
Looking up from her textbook, she grabbed the cat-shaped mug sitting next to her and took a sip of her hot tea. Inhaling sharply as the hot contents warmed her up, she looked up at her window, the drapes drawn allowing rays from the moon to shine into the room.
The lunar eclipse was beginning in a couple of minutes, and she was going to miss it. Nature and how it worked had always fascinated her, but right now she couldn’t care less. If she was going to use homework as an excuse to not go out with Rachel, she had best be done with it before she came home, and she wasn’t letting the amazingness of tonight’s moon distract her.
As the moon began to eclipse, Nina felt an inexplicable restlessness. She tried to focus on her notes, but her senses seemed heightened. Every creak of the old apartment building made her jump. The air was electric.
Suddenly, Nina's body began to feel...different. Her heart rate quickened, and her skin tingled. She looked down, noticing her hands shaking slightly. What was happening?
The room seemed to darken, as if the eclipse was affecting more than just the moon. Nina's vision blurred, and she felt a strange, primal energy coursing through her veins.
She stumbled outside, drawn to the night air. The moon, now a deep crimson, seemed to pulse with an otherworldly power. Nina felt an overwhelming urge to run, to let go of her human constraints.
As she stood there, the world around her began to change. Her senses exploded – she could smell the damp earth, hear the distant howling of wolves, and feel the moon's power coursing through her.
Nina’s body began to shift, her muscles stretching, her senses heightening. She felt herself becoming something else, something wild and free.
The transformation was both exhilarating and terrifying. Nina’s mind reeled as she struggled to comprehend what was happening.
When the eclipse ended, Nina collapsed, exhausted and disoriented. As she looked down at her hands, and saw they were normal – human. But something within her had changed.
Nina stumbled back inside, her mind racing with questions. What had just happened? Was she losing her mind?
The rest of the night was a blur. Nina couldn't shake the feeling that her life would never be the same.
The next morning, Nina woke up feeling...off. Her body ached, and her senses still felt heightened. She looked in the mirror, noticing subtle changes – her eyes seemed brighter, her skin more radiant.
What was happening to her?

Damien could tell. He felt it down to his bones. It was like life had been restored to him, every part of him felt alive again. A feeling he had been waiting for ages.
She was here, just as promised by the prophecy. She has been awakened.
He was going to protect her. He was not going to let anyone hurt her.
But first he needed to find her, and quickly.

It’s been two weeks since the Lunar eclipse. The days blurred together as Nina settled back into her routine, trying to shake off the lingering sense of unease that had settled in her bones like a chill. Classes, homework, and quiet nights with Rachel filled her schedule, providing a comforting sense of normalcy. She attended lectures, took diligent notes, and participated in discussions, all while her mind wandered back to the lunar eclipse.
Nina had almost convinced herself it was just a weird anomaly – a rare celestial event that had triggered a temporary bout of madness. She'd pushed the memories to the back of her mind, focusing on her studies and her part-time job. But the sense of unease lingered, like a shadow in the corner of her room.
It wasn't until the dreams started that Nina began to feel like she was losing her grip on reality. At first, they were vague and fragmented – flashes of running through the forest, feeling the wind in her hair, and the thrill of freedom. But as the nights went by, the dreams grew stronger, more vivid.
In her dreams, Nina was a creature of the night, prowling through the shadows, her senses heightened. She could smell the damp earth, hear the distant howling of wolves, and feel the moon's pull like a magnet. She'd wake up feeling breathless, her heart racing, and her sheets tangled around her legs.
“Are you okay?” Rachel had asked her on one of the occasions when she had woken up abruptly, her entire body damp from sweat and shaking.
Nodding “weird dream” she had answered dismissively, trying to hide her confusion from her worried roommate.
Nina tried to brush it off as just a side effect of stress or too much caffeine, but deep down, she knew it was more. The dreams felt real, like a doorway to a world she'd never known existed. And when she woke up, she'd feel...different. Her senses seemed more acute, her reflexes quicker. It was as if she'd tapped into a part of herself she'd never known before.
As the days turned into weeks, Nina found herself growing more withdrawn. She'd cancel plans with Rachel, citing exhaustion or headaches, when really, she was just trying to make sense of the chaos in her mind. She felt like she was living two lives – the quiet, responsible college student by day, and the wild, untamed creature of the night by...well, not exactly by night, but in her dreams, at least.

Damien's eyes narrowed as his men stood before him, their faces etched with failure. "You mean to tell me that after days of searching, you still can't find her?" he growled, his voice low and menacing.
One of his betas, Tyler, shifted uncomfortably. "We've scoured the city, Alpha. We've checked every lead, every possible location. But there's no sign of her."
Damien's frustration boiled over. He slammed his fist at the table, making the wooden surface creak. "I don't pay you to fail," he snarled. "I pay you to find her. And I want her found, now!”
Ryder hesitated before speaking. "Alpha, perhaps we're looking at this the wrong way. Maybe she's not in the city. Maybe she's gone into hiding."
Damien's gaze turned icy. "Hiding? Why exactly would she hide from what she does not understand. She's out there, I can feel it. Alone and confused. She does not know what’s going on and how to go about this new change that she’s experiencing. You will find her before anyone does. She's been awakened, and she's mine to claim."
The room fell silent, the weight of Damien's determination hanging heavy in the air. His men knew better than to argue with him when he was in this state.
"Find her," Damien repeated, his voice dripping with menace. "I don't care what it takes. Find her, and bring her to me."
As his men dispersed to continue their search, Damien's mind turned to the girl he'd been searching for. He could almost smell her scent, feel her presence. She was out there, waiting for him. And when he found her...
A low growl rumbled in his chest, a promise to himself that he would claim her, no matter what.

"This or this?" Rachel asked, holding up two dresses in front of Nina.
Nina shrugged, lounging on the bed. "I don't know, Rach. I'm not really feeling either of them."
Rachel persisted, holding the dresses closer. One was a sleek black mini-dress, and the other a flowy silver dress with intricate patterns. "Come on, they're perfect! The black one is sleek and sexy, and the silver one is whimsical and fun."
Nina raised an eyebrow. "Whimsical and fun? Really?"
Rachel nodded enthusiastically. "Yes! You need to let loose and have fun tonight. It's time to live a little. Do something different from all that boring life you’ve been living, stuck in this room for way too long , find some nice guy and go home tonight.
Nina sighed, but Rachel's infectious energy was starting to win her over. "I don't know...I'm just not really in the mood for parties."
Rachel sat down beside her. "That's exactly why you need to go. You need to get out, meet new people, and forget about...everything else. Who knows? Maybe you wouldn’t have those nightmares of yours if you were in the arms of a hot throbbing man.”
Nina rolled her eyes good-naturedly. "You're always trying to set me up."
Rachel grinned. "Hey, someone's gotta help you out of your shell! And who knows, maybe tonight will be the night you meet someone amazing."
Nina couldn't help but laugh at Rachel's enthusiasm. "Okay, fine. I'll wear the silver dress. But if I end up standing alone in a corner all night, I blame you."
Rachel squealed with excitement. "Stand in the corner? In that dress? Girl, no way. Now, let's get you ready and make you shine!"
