Blurb

Lira has never shifted. Not once. Every wolf in her pack gets their wolf form the moment they come of age — she never did. So they call her weak. Broken. A waste of a bloodline. She's grown up being laughed at and looked down on, and she's stopped expecting anything different. Then the pack finds out she's the fated mate of Kael, their Alpha.Everyone expects him to claim her. Instead, in front of the whole pack, he rejects her. Calls her unworthy. Says he can't have someone like her standing beside him as Luna. It's the most humiliating moment of her life — and she doesn't beg, doesn't cry in front of them. She just looks at him and tells him he'll regret it.That night, something wakes up inside her.She starts having dreams that aren't dreams. Marks show up on her skin that weren't there before. Animals react to her differently. She realizes her whole life, she wasn't weak — she was sealed. Someone locked her real power away when she was a child, and the rejection just broke that seal open. Now she has to figure out who did this to her, and why they were so afraid of what she'd become. As her power grows, so does the danger. There's an old enemy out there that's been waiting for her bloodline to come back, and it wants her controlled or dead before she gets stronger. Kael, meanwhile, starts falling apart — turns out rejecting a fated mate has a cost, and it's eating away at him. He starts realizing his own family might be tangled up in who sealed her power in the first place. The story follows Lira as she stops needing anyone's approval and becomes someone the whole pack has to take seriously — while Kael has to prove, through actions and not apologies, that he's actually changed. It all builds to a war between packs, a choice Lira has to make about who she trusts, and a final twist that hints her power goes back further than anyone thought — setting things up for book two.

Chapter 1: The Rejection
I knew something was wrong the second my mother stopped meeting my eyes. The whole pack was gathered in the training field that morning, more people than I'd seen in one place in years. Elders. Warriors. Even the healers came out. Nobody told me why. I was just pulled out of the house and told to wear something decent, like decent clothes could fix what everyone already thought of me. I'm the girl who never shifted. Every wolf in Moonfang gets their form the day they turn eighteen. I turned eighteen two years ago. Nothing happened. No fur. No fangs. No wolf staring back at me in my head. Just me, standing in the middle of the field while the whole pack waited for something that never came. After that day, people stopped looking at me like I was one of them. My own cousins crossed the street when they saw me coming. Kids threw stones at my window and called it a joke. I stopped expecting anything different a long time ago. So when Kael walked out in front of everyone that morning, I still didn't understand why I was standing there too. Kael was our Alpha. Strong. Controlled. The kind of person a room went quiet for the second he walked in. I'd spoken to him maybe twice in my whole life, and both times he barely looked at me. Then the pack elder said the words that changed everything. "She is his mate." The silence after that was the loudest thing I've ever heard. I watched Kael's face change. Not soften. Harden. His jaw locked tight and his eyes moved over me the way you'd look at a bill you didn't want to pay. Weighing something. Not liking the answer. I already knew what he was going to say before he said it. "I reject the bond." Four words. That's all it took to make two years of being invisible feel like mercy compared to this. "She is not fit to stand beside me as Luna," he said, loud enough for the whole field to hear. "I won't have a weak mate." Nobody moved. Nobody spoke up for me. Not even my mother. I felt every single eye on that field land on me at once, waiting to see if I'd cry, or beg, or run. I didn't do any of that. I looked straight at Kael and said the only thing that felt true in that moment. "You're going to regret this." Then I turned and walked away before anyone could see my hands shaking. Nobody followed me. Why would they. I wasn't worth chasing. I walked until the training field turned into trees, until the noise of the crowd faded behind me and it was just my footsteps and my own breathing. I didn't cry. I'd promised myself a long time ago I wasn't going to cry in front of people who wanted to see it. But out here, alone, with nobody watching, I let myself stop pretending I was fine. I sat down against a tree and put my head in my hands. Weak. That's what he called me. Not broken, not defective — weak, like it was something I chose. Like I'd woken up one morning and decided not to be a real wolf, just to embarrass everyone. I thought about my father, who left before I could remember his face, and my mother, who'd spent eighteen years apologizing for me without ever actually saying sorry to my face. I thought about every birthday where somebody in the pack made a joke about waiting for the fireworks that never came. I don't know how long I sat there. Long enough for the sun to drop low enough that the woods started turning gray. That's when the pain hit. It started in my spine, a sharp, electric pull that made me gasp out loud. Not an ache. Not a bruise. Something moving, like my body had been holding its breath for years and had finally decided to let it out. I pressed my back against the tree and tried to breathe through it, thinking maybe I was sick, maybe it was stress, maybe grief did strange things to a body. Then I looked down at my arms and forgot how to breathe at all. Black lines were spreading across my skin like ink dropped into water. They curled from my wrists up toward my elbows, twisting into shapes I didn't recognize. Symbols. Old ones. They glowed faint and silver in the dark, like something under my skin had been waiting to wake up and finally got permission. I scrambled backward, my heart slamming so hard I could hear it in my ears. "What is happening to me," I said out loud, to nobody, because there was nobody there to answer. The lines kept spreading. Up my arms. Across my collarbone. My skin felt hot and cold at the same time, like a fever and ice water fighting for the same space. I heard something in my head that wasn't a thought — a voice, distant and low, saying a name. Not my name. A name I'd never heard before in my life. I pressed my hands over my ears like that would block it out, but it wasn't coming from outside. It was coming from somewhere inside me, somewhere I didn't know existed until tonight. For two years I'd been told I was nothing. Weak. Broken. A wolf with no wolf inside her. And now, kneeling in the dirt with strange marks crawling across my skin and a voice calling a name that wasn't mine, I understood something for the first time. I was never weak. I was sealed. Someone had done this to me. Someone had locked something away inside me before I was even old enough to remember, and Kael's rejection had just cracked it wide open. The pain sharpened again, pulling a scream out of me before I could stop it. My vision blurred at the edges. I grabbed at the tree bark to stay upright, but my hands wouldn't listen to me anymore. My legs gave out. The last thing I saw before the world went dark was a shadow moving between the trees. Big. Silent. Watching me. Not a normal wolf. Something older. Something that felt like it had been waiting for me a very long time. And then everything went black.
