Chapter 1 :The Last Night Of My Old Life
The first thing I noticed was how quiet my room felt. Not normal quiet. The kind of quiet that reminds you something is ending. I sat on the floor surrounded by half packed boxes, old pictures, and memories I wasn't ready to put away. My room looked different. The walls that once held my favorite posters were almost empty. My books were packed. My clothes were folded inside suitcases. Everything that made this place feel like home was slowly disappearing. And tomorrow, I would disappear with it. Hi, I'm Divia Parker. I'm eighteen years old, and in less than twenty four hours, I will no longer be a girl from this town. I will be the new girl somewhere else. A place called Papal. Honestly, I still couldn't believe it was happening. A few weeks ago, my biggest problem was deciding what to wear to school or wondering if my best friend would save me a seat at lunch. Now my biggest problem was figuring out how to start a completely new life. I picked up a picture from my desk. It was from my fifteenth birthday. My parents and I were standing outside our small house, smiling like we had everything we needed. And the truth was, we did. We were not rich. We didn't live in a huge house. We didn't have expensive cars or fancy things. But we were happy. My parents worked hard for everything we had, and I never felt ashamed of that. Still, I couldn't stop wondering… Would people in Papal see me differently? Would they think I wasn't enough because I didn't have what they had? A knock on my door interrupted my thoughts. "Come in," I said softly. My mom stepped inside. Elena Parker. The woman who always seemed to know when something was wrong, even when I tried my best to hide it. She looked around my room and smiled sadly. "Looks empty." I looked around too. "Yeah." She sat beside me on the floor. For a few seconds, neither of us spoke. That was the thing about my mom. She never forced words when silence was needed. "Are you scared?" she finally asked. I looked down at my hands. "A little." She smiled gently. "You don't have to pretend you're not." I sighed. "I just keep thinking about everything I'm leaving behind." "I know." "What if I don't make friends there? What if everyone already has their own people and nobody cares about the new girl?" My mom reached for my hand. "Divia, do you know something?" "What?" "You spend so much time worrying about whether people will accept you that you forget something important." "What?" "You are someone worth knowing." I looked at her. She continued. "A new city does not change who you are. A new school does not erase your personality. You will meet people who appreciate you, but first you have to give yourself a chance." I smiled slightly. "My mom always has the perfect words." She laughed. "Because I've had seventeen years of practice with you." I laughed too. For a moment, everything felt normal again. Then reality came back. Tomorrow we were leaving. A few minutes later, my dad called us downstairs for dinner. Daniel Parker was not the kind of person who talked a lot about his feelings, but I knew he loved us. He showed it differently. By working late. By making sure we never lacked anything. By always putting our family first. At dinner, he tried to make the mood lighter. "Tomorrow is the beginning of a new adventure." I raised an eyebrow. "Adventure?" "Yes. New town. New experiences." "Sounds like something from a movie." He smiled. "Maybe your life needs a little movie moment." I laughed. But deep down, I hoped he was right. Later that night, I stood by my bedroom window for the last time. I looked at the street I had known my whole life. The place where I learned how to ride a bike. The place where I had my first friendship. The place where I became me. Tomorrow, I would wake up somewhere else. A new house. A new town. A new school. A new life. I didn't know that moving to Papal would introduce me to people who would change my heart forever. I didn't know that I would find friendships I never expected. I didn't know that I would fall for someone who would make me question everything I believed about love. And I definitely didn't know that Papal was carrying secrets my family had tried to bury for years. All I knew was one thing. Tomorrow, everything would change.
