Betrayal
Beyonce's POV
A day to Christmas, and my mate wasn't home yet. His number rang to voicemail for the umpteenth time, and like always, I didn't bother to leave a message because he never checks.
I know where to find him, but I didn't want to be a bother or complain too much, then get accused of being a nagging mate when all he was trying to do was to be a good Alpha for the Red Maple pack. He has spent the past few weeks at the administrative building, working and solving issues in general for the pack.
Our marriage started blissfully and sweetly, not until two years ago when everything began to sink downwards. As a survivor of childbirth that took the life of my mother, my father, the alpha of the Red Maple pack cherished and showed me nothing but love. Unfortunately, what I saw as love all throughout childhood is what Jack calls spoilt.
"You nag too much."
"I blame your father who raised you to be this way."
"Aren't you ever grateful for all the things I have done since your father passed?"
"Give me a break, Beyonce. You're too needy."
Those were some of his favourite lines to use on me. What started as a beautiful love story was slowly growing darker with every passing season.
"Luna Beyonce," A nurse called my name, jolting me out of the drifting thoughts. "Please come in."
My eyes caught sight of a couple walking in. The pregnant she-wolf had her mate's hand wrapped around her waist to steady her. All I could do was watch and think of how many times I had pleaded with Jack to accompany me to the hospital for checkup and how he kept giving excuses that he was busy.
"Luna?"
I blinked, looking away from the couple and gave the nurse an apologetic smile.
She led me to the doctor's office. Dr. Sarah was behind her large mahogany desk, but stood up immediately to welcome me with a warm handshake.
Her face spread out wide in a smile. "Hello, Luna. How have you been doing?"
I forced out a grin to match her energy. "Very well."
My hand went to my stomach, and I rubbed it with deep longing. This pregnancy and my almost-due childbirth were what kept me hopeful and looking forward to the future.
"That's good to know."
We went further, discussing my recent symptoms before she examined me.
"Everything is all good, Luna. Keep eating healthy, do not overwork, don't overthink, and don't throw yourself into anxiety. Get adequate rest and sleep, and we will be pushing out a beautiful, healthy baby next year." Dr. Sarah said as she took off her gloves after the examination.
My due date was January 14th. For me, it was too far. I couldn't wait to see the baby I will be bringing into this world.
"Thank you so much, doctor. I'll heed all your advice." I said on my way out.
"Emphasis on not overworking, please." She yelled out after me, and I chuckled because that was going right over my head.
I arrived back at the pack house and found the maids setting up more Christmas decorations as I had instructed.
"Carissa, please meet me in my office." I mindlinked my assistant while taking in the decorations. The tree was decorated with silver and gold balls. Everywhere looked exquisitely beautiful, but it was sad that I didn't have my mate to celebrate the season with.
After giving a few instructions for decoration placement, I left for my office.
"You should be resting, Luna." Carissa said as I got in. She was already in here waiting for me.
"Tomorrow is Chris..."
"Yes, Christmas, but we have people taking care of that for us. Please, go to your room." She said with a glare. Carissa was the only one who could boss me around without flinching, and there was nothing I could do about it.
"We haven't decided on the sum we would be donating to the orphanage."
"Luna, you don't..."
I held up my hands, preventing her from saying more. "Have you found out anything from the previous rogue attack at the borders?"
Carissa now gave me an exhausted stare. "I believe that is what your mate...Alpha Jack is for."
My wolf shifted in discomfort from reference to him. He was starving us, and I was beginning to grow more antsy at any little inconvenience.
"Please, now tell me all you've gathered." I looked up at her with narrowed eyes. "Don't tell me you didn't do as instructed."
The guilty look in her eyes gave her away. I sighed and went behind my desk to sit. Jack may be the alpha of this pack, but I still had responsibilities to cover.
My father raised me to be the female alpha of this pack after him. But I surrendered the rights to rule to him before the entire pack a year ago, after my father died. Raised to take over, I knew a lot more than he did and helped with executive matters.
"You know what, you're dismissed. Thanks for being so ineffective."
"Luna Beyonce." She said softly, trying to call me to order.
"I will leave the office for you." I pushed myself out of my seat with a little force that made me stumble, causing me to moan from the slight unexpected pain.
Carissa was staring at me with a mix of worry and fury, but I ignored her, leaving for Jack's office. If he's not going to come to me, then it's high time I go to him.
What kind of mate leaves their pregnant mate alone when it is Christmas the next day? My wolf and I were eager to see him, and now, I was hellbent on satisfying that urge.
Access to my mate has never been an issue because his office was only a stone's throw from the pack house. It was actually the main pack house before Jack, and I decided to move away for privacy. I considered it more like an administrative building, housing the Alpha and his beta, enforcers, and some of the council members that held official positions in the pack. I also have an office here, but I seldom use it. I preferred my office in the pack house because it was easier to access since I was heavily pregnant and close to my due date.
"Lu... Luna Beyonce..." Phina, the front desk officer, rose to her feet, blinking her lashes while looking completely dazed and surprised as I walked in. It's been a long time since I set foot in here, so I understood why she was surprised.
"Hi, Phina. Merry Christmas." I said and blew a kiss at her before walking past.
Phina was such a sweetheart and a big help in this pack. She was my secretary before coming over to the executive building to work as a front desk officer.
As I drew closer to Jack's office door, I couldn't help but feel something was amiss. Ayra, my wolf was already restless in discomfort.
"Calm down, Ayra. We will see our mate soon. Perhaps we would even get a quickie for all the lost time if he's in a good mood."
I blushed at the thought while my hand wrapped around the door handle.
A strange sound had me freezing in place just before I got to open the door.
Is that...
No, I can't guess.
My heartbeat began thumping so fast that I almost wanted to drag myself away. I tightened my grip on the handle, took a deep breath, then pushed the door open.
I blinked, unable to fathom what I was staring at in Jack's office. The sound made sense now.
Sex moans.
The smell of s*x also filled his office. It got me recoiling in utter disgust, threatening to empty my stomach off the breakfast it had.
A she-wolf was seated on the edge of the sofa in the office while Jack was on his knees, sliding into her gently. Her stomach was bulging like mine. She was pregnant!
