CHAPTER ONE
Emily's POV I glanced at the letter on my desk, a frown forming on my face as I picked it up. It looked like a wedding invitation letter and I couldn't help but wonder who was getting married. Dropping my bag to my chair, I leaned against the walls of my office and opened it up with a bored expression. I wouldn't be attending anyway, whoever it was. I had work to do. The moment I pulled the card out, my heart stopped beating for a second. This made no sense, how was this possible? Why would I get an invitation to a wedding that obviously had my name in it? Was there some kind of mistake? I scoffed in annoyance, ringing my secretary’s telephone to find out who placed this on my desk. My mood was already ruined thanks to this. And if it was a prank, I would be firing somebody today. “Hello, ma'am.” “I found an invitation letter on my desk, Sandra. Who placed it here?” I asked, my voice tired and annoyed, and she stayed silent for a second before replying. “I did ma'am.” “What? Why would you—” “Your father asked me to place it there this morning. I was simply following orders, ma'am.” She replied hurriedly and my heart sank to my stomach as her words registered in my head. “Where's my father?” I asked, and the moment she replied, I slammed the phone back to its place and stormed out of my office. I ignored the employees who greeted me as I rushed up the stairs, too impatient and anxious to take the stairs. If I stayed still, I would slam my head against the wall or something. The moment I got to the top floor, I was already breathing heavily but I barged into his office anyway, not bothering to knock. I didn't care, I had to understand whatever the f**k was going on. “Father, what is this?” I asked in confusion, throwing the letter to his desk, and for a moment, he kept his gaze glued to the magazine he was reading. Like he didn't know I was in here. “Father.” “I know you're educated, Emily.” Father started, still not turning to me. “You can definitely read, can't you? What does that look like to you?” “I don't understand what this means. Why would you tell Sandra to give me a wedding invitation that has my name written on it?” I questioned in frustration and he suddenly slammed the magazine on the table, causing me to flinch. “Because you're getting married. Don't tell me you're so stupid as not to know what that means. You, Emily, are getting married. Get that into your head.” He muttered in annoyance and it felt like I had just been doused with cold water. “Father, I never agreed to getting married. I have done everything you have ever asked of me, but getting married? Without my consent? You didn't even think of asking me first—” “What? You're going to disagree?” I heard my mother's voice from behind me, and my heart sank when I realized she was in on this, too. I wasn't surprised, they all hated me just because I was a survivor. “I'm just saying I should have at least been informed—” “Oh, just like you should have informed your brother that he would die trying to save your pathetic life?” Mother spat and I froze. Of course, she would always hate me for surviving while her beloved son died. Like it was my fault the accident took his life instead of mine. “You should have died instead of him. At least the family had a bright future thanks to him. Yet, you ungrateful i***t are trying to turn down our way of helping you? How did I even have a daughter like you?” She started to cry and I watched with my jaw on the floor as father moved to her side to comfort her. They were trying to help me by marrying me off to a man I didn't know? This was their way of helping me? Ever since my brother died, I tried to make them love me again, tried to do everything to make them see that I was worth their love. And this was what I got in return? “I will not get married,” I said defiantly, holding my chin high and they turned to stare at me like I had made the most disgusting remark in the entire world. “What did you say?” “I said I will not get married. I'm not some kind of property that you can sell off whenever you like. I don't even know who you're selling me off to. What if he's a killer? A dangerous mafia? What if—” “You think I care about your opinion?” Father interrupted me with a scowl and I froze. “You think I won't have you locked up in the basement until the day you're about to get married? I don't care what you think or say. You're getting married, and that's final.” He spat in annoyance, his eyes glaring daggers at me and my eyes welled with tears that I blinked away immediately. “You don't care that I could die?” I managed to whisper, expecting something that could at least show me that they cared for me a little. But my mother scoffed in amusement. “The world would be a better place without you in it. You're getting married, no matter what.” She said with a glint of hatred in her eyes and I stumbled backward, my throat tightening as a sob threatened to escape my lips. “You can leave and don't try to do anything funny. You know the consequences of defying my orders.” Father added and I almost laughed. He would torture me until I hated my life and eventually begged to do whatever he wanted me to. That was the kind of parents I had, ones who didn't care if I lived or died. They would be happier if I were dead. “Get ready, you're getting married to Alpha Ramon in three days,” Father concluded and waved his hand to dismiss me when the name struck a chord in me, causing me to freeze. I had seen the name on the invitation card but I was too furious to process who it was. Now that I heard it, it sent waves of shock and disgust running through me as I prayed that it wasn't who I thought it was. “Alpha Ramon as in the CEO of Raven company?” I asked in horror and when he confirmed it with a nod, my legs buckled, threatening to give way. My parents didn't just sell me out to any random man. They were giving me off to the worst man to ever exist on this planet and worse, he was my high school bully.
