Chapter One – Shadows of the Walk
Olivia’s shoes were wet. Rain ran down her hair. Her coat was soaked. The city was loud. Cars honked. People shouted. She walked for a long time. Her legs were tired. Her head felt heavy.
The streets were slippery. Puddles reflected the lights of the city. She stepped carefully, watching her feet. Every splash reminded her of the day. Every raindrop felt sharp on her skin.
She finally reached her building. The steps were wet. Her hands shook as she fumbled for her keys. She found them and opened the door. The hallway smelled of wet wood and cleaning soap. Quiet. Too quiet.
Then she heard noise downstairs. Boxes moved. Something heavy scraped the floor. Someone was moving in. Olivia froze. She leaned on her door frame and listened.
A man appeared at the bottom of the stairs. Tall. Strong. Careful. He carried a big box. He looked up and saw her.
“Hi,” he said. Calm. Soft. “I’m Ethan. I just moved in. Thought I should say hello.”
Olivia’s throat felt dry. “I’m Olivia,” she said. Her voice was small.
He smiled faintly. Not the kind of smile to charm. Quiet. Then he went into his apartment.
Olivia closed her door slowly. Her heart beat fast. She didn’t know why. But she was curious. Something about him felt strange.
She sank on her couch. The rain tapped on the window. Lightning flashed. Thunder rolled. Olivia hugged her knees. She tried to think about other things.
She thought about the boxes. About the way he moved. About his quiet smile. Something about him felt… heavy. Like he carried a story she didn’t know. She wanted to know it.
She thought about her walk. About the noise, the rain, the city. About how it all made her feel tired and small. She thought about the way the world sometimes felt too big. And she thought about how strange it was to feel curious about someone she had just met.
The building was quiet now. The storm was loud outside. But inside, Olivia felt a new kind of noise. A question. Something that whispered in her chest: Who is he? Why is he here?
She didn’t know it yet. But Ethan’s arrival was only the beginning.
