CHAPTER 17 - THE MOUNTAIN ESCAPE

The new tunnel led them out onto a narrow mountain path high above the valley. Cold wind howled across the cliffs. Alora bent over, trying to catch her breath. “That man… he’s incredibly powerful.” Cael nodded grimly. “Zareth is Nyxara’s most dangerous general.” Lyra scanned the sky carefully. “And he’s not the type to give up.” As if proving her right, a loud thunderclap echoed across the mountains. Dark clouds gathered quickly overhead. From within them flew massive black creatures—winged beasts with glowing red eyes. “Shadow riders,” Lyra said. Riders wearing obsidian armor sat on the creatures’ backs, guiding them straight toward the group. Alora looked down at the glowing sword in her hand. “Then I guess we keep fighting.” Lyra smiled. “That’s the spirit.” The first shadow rider dove toward them. Lyra leaped forward, striking the creature with her sword. The beast screeched and veered away. Another swooped down toward Alora. She lifted the Blade of Stars. The sword flared with brilliant light. With one powerful swing, she released a wave of energy that cut through the air like lightning. The shadow creature burst into mist. But more riders kept coming. Cael opened a glowing portal behind them. “Inside!” he shouted. One by one they jumped through the portal. Just before it closed, Zareth’s lightning struck the ground where they had been standing. They escaped again. But the enemy was getting closer.
