# The Space Between Us

Ayla never believed that falling in love with her best friend would be the thing that destroyed their friendship.

For years, Rayyan had been her safest place—the person she could call at any hour, the one who understood her without explanations, and the only person she couldn't imagine her life without. Somewhere along the way, their friendship became something more for Ayla. She fell in love with him silently, deeply, and completely.

But love came with fear.

Terrified of losing Rayyan, Ayla slowly became possessive. She questioned the girls he talked to, disliked anyone who seemed too close to him, and especially distrusted Maya, one of their mutual friends. What Ayla didn't realize was that her fear of losing Rayyan was slowly pushing him away.

Maya noticed everything.

She knew about Ayla's feelings, yet she consciously began getting closer to Rayyan. A little flirting here, an unnecessary message there, an excuse to spend time together—nothing obvious enough to be called betrayal, but enough to create a distance between the two best friends.

As Rayyan grows tired of Ayla's jealousy and controlling behavior, he begins finding comfort in Maya's easygoing presence. Their friendship changes, conversations become shorter, and the person who once knew Ayla better than anyone begins becoming a stranger.

Then Ayla finally confesses the truth.

She loves him.

But by the time she finds the courage to say it, Rayyan's heart is already somewhere else.

Heartbroken, Ayla must face the painful truth that loving someone doesn't mean having the right to keep them. She must learn the difference between love and possession, between fighting for someone and letting them choose, and between losing a person and losing herself.

*The Space Between Us* is an emotional story about best friends, unspoken love, jealousy, betrayal, heartbreak, and healing. It explores what happens when the fear of losing someone becomes the very reason you lose them—and how sometimes the greatest love story is not the one where you end up together, but the one that teaches you how to find yourself again.

Before Love Had A Name
Ayla had always believed that the best things in life happened quietly. Not with fireworks. Not with dramatic confessions beneath the rain. Not with the kind of perfect timing that existed only in the novels she secretly read before going to sleep. Sometimes, the most important things began with something ordinary. For Ayla, it had been a broken umbrella. Seven years ago, on a rainy Monday morning, she had been standing outside her college classroom, fighting with an umbrella that refused to open. "Come on," she muttered, pulling at the handle. "Please." The umbrella snapped shut again. Ayla stared at it in disbelief. "You have got to be kidding me." Someone laughed behind her. She turned around. A boy was standing a few feet away, holding a black umbrella over his head. His hair was slightly wet, and there was an amused smile on his face. "You're fighting with that thing like it personally offended you." Ayla narrowed her eyes. "It did." He laughed. "Clearly." She looked back at the useless umbrella in her hands. "Do you have a problem?" "No." "Then why are you laughing?" "Because you're arguing with an umbrella." "Maybe it deserves it." He smiled. "Maybe." There was something about the way he said it that made her want to smile too. But she refused. Instead, she picked up her bag and walked toward the classroom. The boy followed. "You know," he said, "if you keep fighting it, you're probably going to lose." "I wasn't asking for advice." "I know." "Then why are you giving it?" "Because you look like you need it." She stopped walking. He almost walked into her. "What?" He pointed toward her umbrella. "Give it to me." She hesitated. "I can fix it." "You don't even know what's wrong with it." "Neither do you." Ayla handed it over. He examined the umbrella for a few seconds before adjusting something near the handle. He pressed the button. The umbrella opened perfectly. Ayla stared at it. Then at him. "How did you—" "Experience." "Or luck." "Definitely experience." She rolled her eyes. "Thank you." "You're welcome." He smiled. "I'm Rayyan." She looked at him. "Ayla." And that was it. There was no magical music. No sudden realization. Just two strangers standing in a rainy hallway, introducing themselves before walking into the same classroom. Neither of them knew that morning would eventually become one of the most important memories of Ayla's life. Because Rayyan didn't remain a stranger. He became her friend. Then her best friend. And eventually, without either of them noticing exactly when it happened, he became home. Years passed. Their friendship grew in the most effortless way. Rayyan became the person Ayla called when she had good news. When she had bad news. When she was bored. When she was angry. When she couldn't sleep. When she simply wanted someone to talk to. He knew her habits better than anyone. He knew she hated being woken up early. He knew she always ordered too much food and then complained that she couldn't finish it. He knew she pretended not to care when someone hurt her feelings. He knew that whenever she became unusually quiet, something was wrong. And Ayla knew him just as well. She knew that Rayyan tapped his fingers against tables whenever he was nervous. She knew he hated crowded places. She knew he listened to the same songs repeatedly whenever he was stressed. She knew he always said he wasn't hungry and then stole food from her plate. Their friendship was filled with small things. Things that nobody else noticed. A shared glance across a crowded room. A message sent at exactly midnight. A joke that made no sense to anyone else. A silent understanding when one of them needed to leave somewhere. They became inseparable. People stopped asking where one was if they saw the other. "Where's Rayyan?" "With Ayla." "Where's Ayla?" "Probably with Rayyan." It became normal. Comfortable. Safe. Until one day, Ayla realized something had changed. She was sitting across from Rayyan in their favorite café, watching him talk about something that had happened earlier that day. She wasn't really listening. She was watching him smile. And suddenly, she felt something she couldn't explain. Her heart skipped. She looked away quickly. "What?" She looked back. "What?" "You were staring." "I wasn't." "You were." "I was listening." "With your eyes?" She laughed nervously. "Just continue." He smiled and went back to talking. But Ayla couldn't concentrate anymore. That night, she lay in bed staring at the ceiling. She thought about him. His smile. His voice. The way he always remembered the smallest things about her. And slowly, painfully, she understood. She was in love with her best friend. The realization frightened her. Because friendship was safe. Love wasn't. Friendship didn't require choices. Love did. And Ayla didn't know if Rayyan would ever choose her. So she said nothing. She buried the feeling beneath jokes and ordinary conversations. She convinced herself that it would disappear. It didn't. Instead, it grew. And with it came something else. Fear. The fear of losing him. At first, it was barely noticeable. When a girl laughed too loudly at Rayyan's jokes, Ayla felt irritated. When someone complimented him, she became quiet. When he mentioned spending time with another girl, she suddenly found herself asking too many questions. "Who was she?" "Just a classmate." "Oh." "Why?" "No reason." She always had a reason. She simply never admitted it. Then came Maya. Maya was part of their mutual friend group. She was confident, outgoing, and beautiful in a way that made people naturally notice her. Unlike Ayla, Maya never seemed afraid of saying exactly what she wanted. At first, Ayla didn't think much of her. Maya was their friend. Nothing more. But then Ayla began noticing the way Maya looked at Rayyan. The way she laughed whenever he spoke. The way she always found a reason to sit beside him. The way she started messaging him more often. Small things. Almost meaningless. Except Ayla noticed everything. One afternoon, the group was sitting together when Maya leaned toward Rayyan. "You should come with me tomorrow." Rayyan raised an eyebrow. "Where?" "There's a new restaurant I want to try." "Why me?" Maya smiled. "Because I like your company." Everyone laughed. Ayla didn't. She looked down at her phone. Her fingers tightened around it. Rayyan smiled. "Maybe." "Maybe?" "I'll let you know." Maya smiled again. "Okay." Ayla looked up. For a second, her eyes met Maya's. Maya was still smiling. But there was something different in her expression. Something that made Ayla uncomfortable. Ayla looked away. That evening, she and Rayyan walked home together as usual. But the silence between them felt different. Finally, Ayla spoke. "Are you going out with Maya tomorrow?" Rayyan looked at her. "Maybe." "Why?" "She invited me." "Oh." "Why do you sound upset?" "I'm not." "You are." "I'm just asking." Rayyan smiled slightly. "You ask a lot of questions." Ayla looked away. "Someone has to." He laughed. She smiled too. But inside, something had already begun changing. Because Ayla had spent years believing Rayyan was hers in the safest possible way. Not romantically. Not officially. But emotionally. He was her person. And now she was beginning to realize that being someone's best friend didn't mean being the only person in their world. She wanted to be more. She wanted to be the one he chose. And that desire would soon become the very thing that pushed him away.
