Chapter one : The Girl Who Dreamed
The sound of laughter floated through the small house as Jennifer hurried from the kitchen to the sitting room, carrying a tray of steaming cups of tea. “Careful, Jennifer!” her mother called. “I’m careful, Mama!” Jennifer answered with a laugh. She placed the tray on the little wooden table in front of her father and younger siblings before wiping her hands on the side of her dress. The house was modest. The walls needed repainting, one of the windows refused to close properly, and the old sofa in the sitting room had been repaired so many times that Jennifer had stopped counting. But to her, it was home. And home was everything. Jennifer looked around at her family and smiled. Her father, Daniel, sat quietly in his favorite chair, reading an old newspaper. Her mother, Grace, was folding clothes nearby. Her younger brother, Michael, was arguing with their little sister, Anna, over the television remote. “Give it to me!” “No! I was watching!” “You've been watching for one hour!” “Mummy!” Grace sighed. “Both of you, stop.” They immediately became quiet. Jennifer laughed. “You two are impossible.” Michael looked at her. “You always take Anna's side.” “Because Anna is my favorite.” Anna jumped up happily. “I knew it!” Michael groaned. Jennifer smiled again. These little moments were the ones she treasured most. She was eighteen, and although people often told her that she was beautiful, Jennifer never thought much about it. She was more interested in what she could become. She loved drawing. She loved designing clothes. She loved singing when nobody was listening. And most of all, she loved creating things with her hands. There was an old notebook hidden beneath her mattress. Inside it were dozens of sketches—dresses, handbags, shoes, jewelry, and entire fashion collections. One day, Jennifer wanted to become a successful designer. Not because she wanted fame. Not even because she wanted expensive cars or a huge house. She wanted to make enough money to give her parents a comfortable life. Her father had worked for years to provide for them, but Jennifer knew how difficult things had become. That afternoon, she found him sitting alone on the veranda. “Daddy?” He looked up. “Yes, my daughter?” Jennifer sat beside him. “You look worried.” Daniel smiled faintly. “Nothing you should worry about.” “That's what you always say.” He chuckled. “You've become too observant.” Jennifer leaned against his shoulder. “I'm your daughter. I'm supposed to know when something is wrong.” Her father's smile disappeared for a moment. He looked toward the street. “I've been thinking about your future.” Jennifer straightened. “My future?” “Yes.” “What about it?” “You're eighteen now. Soon you'll have to make important decisions about your life.” Jennifer smiled. “I already know what I want.” Daniel raised an eyebrow. “And what is that?” “To become a fashion designer.” Her father laughed softly. “I knew you would say that.” “You don't believe I can do it?” “I believe you can do anything you put your mind to.” Jennifer's smile grew. “But?” Daniel hesitated. “But the world isn't always kind to people with big dreams.” Jennifer looked at him seriously. “Then I'll have to be stronger than the world.” For a moment, her father simply stared at her. Then he smiled. “That sounds like my daughter.” Jennifer hugged him. “I'll make you proud.” “You already do.” Neither of them knew that those words would soon become more important than either could imagine. --- Three days later, Jennifer's life changed. It began with a letter. She had just returned from the market when she found an envelope waiting on the table. Her name was written across it. Jennifer Daniel. She frowned. “Mama?” Grace came out of the kitchen. “What is it?” “This letter.” Her mother wiped her hands and walked over. “Open it.” Jennifer carefully tore the envelope. Her eyes widened as she read. “What is it?” Anna asked. Jennifer didn't answer. She read the letter again. Then once more. “Mama…” “What?” “I got accepted.” Grace's face lit up. “Accepted where?” Jennifer looked up. “At the fashion and creative arts program.” Her mother gasped. “You did?” Jennifer nodded. “I did!” Grace hugged her immediately. “Oh, my daughter!” Jennifer laughed as tears filled her eyes. Michael came running into the room. “What happened?” “She got accepted!” Anna shouted. “Accepted for what?” “Fashion school!” Michael stared at Jennifer. “Does that mean you're going to become famous?” Jennifer laughed. “Maybe.” “Then remember us when you're famous.” “I'll buy you the biggest television in the world.” Michael grinned. “Promise?” “Promise.” But happiness lasted only a few minutes. Because when Daniel returned home and read the letter, his expression changed. The program was excellent. The opportunity was even better than Jennifer had imagined. But it was expensive. Very expensive. Jennifer watched her father's face carefully. “How much?” he asked. She quietly told him. Silence filled the room. Daniel folded the letter. Jennifer's heart sank. “I can find a way,” she said quickly. Her father looked at her. “Jennifer…” “I'll work. I can make bags. I can sew. I can sell my designs.” “You shouldn't have to carry everything.” “I don't mind.” Grace reached for her daughter's hand. “We'll figure it out.” Jennifer nodded, but she could see the worry in her parents' eyes. That night, she lay awake staring at the ceiling. Her dream was right there. Close enough to touch. Yet somehow still out of reach. She turned toward the window. “I won't give up,” she whispered. She didn't know it yet, but an unexpected person was about to enter her life. Someone whose world was completely different from hers. Someone who had money beyond anything she had ever imagined. Someone who would make her question everything she believed about love. His name was Alexander Williams. And he was the son of one of the richest men in Nigeria. Jennifer had never met him. She didn't even know he existed. But their paths were about to cross. And when they did, neither of their lives would ever be the same again.
