Chapter Five: A Love Tested

712 Words
Jennifer woke up the next morning with a smile she couldn't explain. She had barely slept. Her mind kept returning to the previous evening—to the way Daniel had looked at her, the kindness in his voice, and the strange feeling she had whenever he was near. Daniel. She smiled at the thought of his name, then quickly shook her head. "Jennifer, stop it. You've only known him for a short time." But her heart refused to listen. Later that afternoon, Jennifer received a message. Daniel: Can I see you today? There's something I want to tell you. Her heart skipped. She typed a reply, deleted it, typed again, and finally sent: Jennifer: Okay. Where? A few minutes later, Daniel sent the location of a quiet café. When Jennifer arrived, she saw him sitting by the window. He stood immediately when he noticed her. "You came," he said with a smile. "Of course I came." Daniel pulled out a chair for her. For a while, they simply talked. They laughed about silly things, discussed their dreams, and slowly forgot about the world around them. Then Daniel's expression changed. "Jennifer, there's something you need to know." She looked at him carefully. "What is it?" Daniel took a deep breath. "My family is complicated." Jennifer frowned. "What do you mean?" "My father is extremely wealthy, and because of that, people are always trying to get close to me because of my family's money." Jennifer's face became serious. "And you think I'm one of those people?" "No," Daniel quickly replied. "I know you're not." "Then why are you telling me this?" "Because I like you, Jennifer. And I don't want to hide anything from you." Her heart began beating faster. "I like you too," she whispered. Daniel smiled. But before he could say anything else, a woman's voice interrupted them. "Daniel?" They both turned. A beautiful young woman stood behind them. Jennifer immediately noticed the expensive clothes, perfect makeup, and confident expression on her face. Daniel's smile disappeared. "Vanessa." Vanessa looked at Jennifer from head to toe. "So this is the girl you've been spending time with." Jennifer felt uncomfortable. Daniel stood up. "Vanessa, this isn't the place." "Oh, I disagree," Vanessa replied. "I think it's exactly the right place." She turned toward Jennifer. "You should know something about Daniel." "Vanessa, stop." But Vanessa continued. "Daniel's family already has plans for his future. He's expected to marry someone who understands his world." Jennifer's heart sank. She looked at Daniel. "Is that true?" Daniel stepped closer. "Jennifer, please don't listen to her." But Jennifer was already hurt. She stood up. "I think I should go." "Jennifer—" She walked away before he could stop her. Outside the café, tears filled her eyes. She had finally allowed herself to believe that someone like Daniel could genuinely love her. But perhaps she had been foolish. Behind her, Daniel ran after her. "Jennifer!" She stopped but didn't turn around. "Please," he said softly. "Don't let someone else decide what you mean to me." Jennifer slowly turned. "Then tell me, Daniel. What am I to you?" Daniel looked directly into her eyes. "You're the first person I've met who doesn't care about my money. You're the person who makes me forget that I'm the son of a billionaire." He took her hand. "And you're becoming the person I don't want to lose." Jennifer's heart softened. But before she could answer, Daniel's phone rang. He looked at the screen. His father's name was displayed. Daniel answered. "Hello, Dad." His expression suddenly changed. Jennifer watched him carefully. "What happened?" she asked when he ended the call. Daniel looked at her. "My father knows about us." Jennifer's heart dropped. "And he wants to meet you." She stared at him in shock. "Me?" Daniel nodded. "Yes. And I don't think he's going to make things easy for us." Jennifer swallowed nervously. For the first time, she realized that falling in love with Daniel wouldn't be simple. There was his wealthy family. There were expectations. There was Vanessa. And now there was Daniel's father. Jennifer squeezed Daniel's hand. "Whatever happens, I want the truth." Daniel smiled gently. "I promise." But neither of them knew that the meeting with Daniel's father would change everything.
