In a dystopian future, women's lives are controlled by a powerful patriarchal system. When they come of age, the most beautiful are sold to the most powerful as a status symbol. Jess is contracted in marriage to a man as old as her father, but one night an accident leaves her stranded outside and her purity compromised. As a result, she faces an uncertain future in a world where she cannot win or have any control over her own life or body.

Introduction
The bride had finally arrived and gazed out over the sea of wedding guests, her delicate white veil casting a shadow over her face. Yet one man standing alone on the sidelines drew her attention, his presence igniting a smouldering desire in her lower stomach. Jess felt her heart race with a mix of longing and dread coursing through her veins. “Imagine if he came over here and kissed me in front of the entire community.” The uncensored thought made her blush and feel hot with shame as she remembered the hot lust they had shared when they had secretly been together. She pushed the pleasurable feeling down, but it was hard to shake the thrill of rebellion that whispered seductively in her ear. The scandal still hung over her like a dark cloud, threatening to unravel the carefully woven fabric of her reputation. Even now, she felt the weight of prying eyes, watching for any sign that she was fallen. A fallen woman was the lowest of the low, destined to sell her body to satisfy the lust of strangers —a life steeped in danger and disgrace. Jess recoiled at the thought, knowing that was not going to be her fate. She was a celebrated beauty. A creature of passion and ambition even as the chains of her society tightened around her. The man she was marrying in this arranged marriage could grant her the power and status she craved, and yet the desire for the one she truly desired clawed at her insides. Her lower body clenched with need. It was a ravenous beast that refused to be tamed. In the depths of her heart, she wrestled with a dark truth: her love for him was a consuming flame, one that threatened to engulf her and reduce her to ash, leaving only the husk of a despised woman. Despite the soreness coursing through her body from the earlier accident and the sting of her father's punishment still fresh in her back, Jess steeled herself for what lay ahead. Today was her wedding day, and she was about to marry well. Jabez would elevate not only her status but that of her entire family. As his eighteenth wife, she would be the youngest and most beautiful. That meant he would surely favour her over his other wives especially if she pleased him, and Jess fully intended to please him, if it got her what she wanted. Beneath her heavy veils, Jess couldn’t help but smile to herself. Though her heart still ached for Adriel, the promise of marrying Jabez stirred a different kind of anticipation within her. The man was older, yes, but he retained a certain rugged charm that made him undeniably attractive. Jess had a plan, one that would make the daunting prospect of their marriage bearable. When Jabez took her to his bed, she would close her eyes and imagine Adriel's strong, hard body, his face etched in her memory. Just thinking about him sent strange flutters of excitement through her yet again, threatening to ignite a fire she didn’t have time to extinguish at this moment. She shook her head and pushed the thought aside. She was determined to be the perfect wife and mother in this new, dignified household, armed with enough memories of to keep her satisfied. Her plan seemed flawless, meticulously crafted in her mind. Yet, lurking in the back of her thoughts was a nagging suspicion that she would never truly forget Adriel. In the coming weeks, he would be sent away, thrust into the frontlines of the war, defending their way of life. Jess doubted he would return. Most young men did not come back, and those who did often bore the scars of battle—physically or otherwise. This reality weighed heavily on her, adding urgency to her need to marry well. A powerful husband would provide protection for herself and her younger siblings, offering her sister a chance to elevate her own status and shielding her brother from the harsh requirements of war. Lost in these spiraling thoughts, Jess failed to notice Adriel had cut through the crowd who were taking their seats and in the confusion had cut through the bridal party to reach her side. His voice broke through her reverie, tinged with desperation. "Jess, this isn’t how your story is supposed to end. Don’t settle for a life that doesn’t make your heart race." Her breath hitched as she instinctively recoiled, but Adriel was swift and determined, moving swiftly to her side as her bridesmaids gasped at his sheer size and power. Jess felt her legs weaken under the intensity of his presence. Fear gripped her—what would others think if they suspected something was amiss between them? She turned her head away, pushing her maids forward to initiate the marriage ceremony, allowing the spectators to believe he was just another critic opposing the union. Though he never broke his gaze from her, she forced herself to ignore him, drowning in a tempest of emotions she couldn’t begin to process. The tension was suffocating, and she needed to escape it. As the blaring trumpets signalled the start of the ceremony, the front maidens began their procession toward the wedding platform. Only Jess and her half-sister remained behind. Adriel leaned closer, his breath warm against her veiled face as he whispered fiercely, ““If I have to wait a lifetime, I will. I will never forget you, and when the time is right, I’ll come for you.” Jess could only stare, speechless, as the weight of his words pressed down on her. With a heavy heart, she turned and began walking up the aisle to the music—toward the man she was meant to marry and away from the man she truly loved.
