Chapter: ONE
My name is Ash, short for Ashley, and I will be turning 18 in just a few days. Anyway, it's been pretty normal growing up. It's mostly just myself, my mother, and also my grandfather for as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, I don't really know all that much about my father. I just know that he stopped coming around when I was only 6 or 7 years old, maybe. Also, from whatever my mom and grandpa would tell me whenever I ask about him. They would just tell me the same thing most of the time or would just simply change the conversation to something else, so I just stopped asking altogether.
I went to school full time, plus I worked with my uncle on his horse farm, so I was always busy. I also have my very own horses as well. I always loved going out on horseback for day-long trail rides when I had my free time from school and work, and I would go with some of the others on long weekend camping trips and take our horses along as well. As soon as we got to our camp site, we would get everything set up and have a campfire going. Myself and some of the other people would saddle up and head out for an afternoon ride. Once we got back to camp, we would make sure the horses were fed and had water for the night.
Gathering around the campfire, we would roast some hot dogs and listen to stories that the adults were telling the younger kids. I probably would be able to, just because I have heard them all the time and know every story by heart. There is this one story that is told at least a couple of times on every trip. It is called 'The Wolf People'.
The Wolf People
Thousands of years ago, there was a tribe of people who lived in the deep parts of the forest known as the Wolf people. It's been said that these people had the ability to change or shape shifting from human to wolf, also known as werewolves. They were given a bad reputation of being murderous beasts, thanks to the humans who told such horrible lies. These werewolves were descendants of the moon. A better way of explaining it would be that the moon was their own version of God. She was the one who created the werewolf breed herself. She was or is the Moon Goddess.
It was said that she gave them a very special gift, the ability to feel or sense who their true mate is. It's called the mate bond, which is a very strong feeling that either one of them will be able to feel when they are close to each other. Like a soul mate would be for humans. The Wolf people had many tribes or packs, as they were called. Each pack has a male and a female matted pair who are the leaders, called the Alpha and Luna. Then there are the Betas and the Gammas. Their jobs are to protect their Alpha and Luna along with the pack and to also help with pack duties. As time went on, humans then started to hunt and kill werewolves just for sport. Some packs were able to get away from the hunters and found refuge within the deep parts of the forest. The last known sighting was well over a hundred years ago.
I have gotten older and so much wiser with the many changes that have happened in my life. I now work full time at my uncle's farm, and I am pretty much my own boss most of the time unless I get some pointers from my uncle. Unfortunately, my grandfather passed away a few years ago, and this past year was very hard because I lost my mom to cancer. It's been hard for me, but I am also very lucky to have my two life-long best friends, Kim and Toni, by my side.
There are only a few days left till my birthday and, for once, I am actually excited about it because we are having a cookout and pool party to celebrate our new home we all bought together. As of this evening, the girls and I are going out to my favorite bar-type place with a huge game room. Once there, we ordered our meals and went over to the game room to seek out our normal corner table that had the best view of the whole game room. While waiting for our food, we played a few games of pool to practice kicking others' asses.
As our orders arrived, we sat and enjoyed our food. I started to smell this amazing scent that I had never smelled before. I thought to mys,lf 'What is that amazing smell?' As I started to look around the room in hopes of finding the source. Pine wood mixed with fresh forest rain. I caught a movement outside the corner of my ye, and once my eyes finally got a good look, I just froze. These three Godlike men walked through the door to the game room. They were all pretty tall and very, very muscular. The one guy caught me looking at them and stopped suddenly, causing his two friends to almost run into the back of him.
He looked to be maybe 6'5" and in his early twenties. The other two were a bit shorter but still just as good-looking. Hell, I even caught Kim and Toni drooling over them. The one who saw me looking leaned over to his friends and said something, but whatever that was, he had the other two smiling. Nope, not weird at all, I thought to myself again. As I was looking right into this man's beautiful deep ocean blue eyes, it had me feeling as though I just might drown if I didn't look away, but as I started to turn away, I swear it almost looked as though the man's eyes changed colors. That didn't seem to really freak me out, but inst, ad I had this overwhelming urge to just run and jump right into his big and strong arms.
'What the hell is wrong with me?' I said in a whispered voice and hoping that no one else heard me. I shook my head to try and clear out my thoughts and went to the pool table to set up for a new game. I started to hear footsteps coming up from behind, me and as I turned aro, and I was met with those same deep ocean blue eyes looking right back at me. This guy was only a few inches away staring right into my very own soul. I was way too busy to realize that I was standing right in front of the pool sticks as he went to reach around me to get one.
The man walked around the table to do the first break shot. I, on the other hand, was having a very hard time controlling my own thoughts from running wild. Now it was my turn, so I walked around the table looking for the perfect shot. As I was just lining up, this god-like man broke the silence between us. . . "My name is Richard Morris, but most of my friends just call me Rick." His deep sexy voice rings out to my ears. Well. . . I don't always miss unless it was a tough shot, but somehow I managed to miss this simple and very easy one.
