Sérafin is the first hybrid to be accepted into Arcane Academy, a school for the supernatural and gifted humans, and was also the first to be open about it. Now a Freshman at Arcane due to unforeseen circumstances, she crosses the path of three brothers, triplets in line to become the next Lycan King and ruler of all beasts. This world is completely new to her, a sheltered hybrid, who knows not the outer workings of hierarchy or her place.

Chapter 1
A proliferated, blue-gray brick building with a timeless, symmetrical exterior. The old - only in name - Arcane Academy was located in an alternate dimension hidden from non-supernatural eyes with the help of top coven leaders millenia before even her great grand-mere’s and grand-pere’s had even been thought about. There were dramatically decorated blue-gray columns at the outer iron fenced entrance, topped with sturdy stone pediments, hinting at the school's ancientness, while the large, arched windows along the first floor allowed streams of natural light to brighten the well-worn, though updated, hallways and classrooms. The upper floors past the second, held two-to-each-room, horizontally opening casements that were decent sized portals into student dorms. There were at least twenty floors to the building from what Sérafin could see, making her cringe internally at the thought of how many inhabited the iron and steel threaded fortress, alerted to her by wolf instinct. On the balustrades of each floor about every twenty feet or so, stood wards of the gargoyle variety, alerted to Sérafin by the inherited magicks of her blood. The Bruja was the most powerful in North America and at twenty-two, was in line to lead the largest coven in the United States. Eventually taking her mamá’s place as Reina Bruja, despite one not so minor problem, the wolf side that not even tempering with magicks could control. Being born a hybrid and only showing signs of being a witch, Sérafin had delayed to almost no training on emotional control and temperament. One day, now that the wolf was awoken, Sérafin would be married off to the strongest Alpha of her papá’s choosing, unless her ancestors and the powers that be, had other plans. Please have ohder plans. Sérafin thought, walking through the already wide open fence and making her way to the first set of huge oak doors warded so that only those intended got through. The thought of losing autonomy over herself because of an ancient and outdated hierarchy made Sérafin’s skin crawl with unease, I mean what if he’s a d**k? The Academy’s central courtyard was about two acres of beautifully tended greenery and flora, with echinacea, elderberry, chamomile, and calendula herbs interspersed. In the school and through to the other side, the courtyard was accessible through grand oak double doors decorated with all manner of the occult though she didn’t head that way. It was a place that held student activities, picnic tables and the sounds of laughter during free time and currently sat empty as first class was about to start. The library was located on the second floor with high ceilings, wooden bookshelves, and a golden ladder with wheels at each wall allowing access to the high-rising literature. The place exuded a quiet learning atmosphere, while the gymnasium unconnected to the school and across the lawn of the courtyard, sported polished hardwood floors, male/female locker rooms, bleachers, and a wide track and field in the back of it. The school itself was a literal giant square. Sérafin was currently headed to the Headmaster’s office, which of course she also had already seen on the tour with her mother and father two months ago. It was down the hall to her left, its entrance just as grand as the one onto the property, although made of bronze, it reminded her of the Ghiberti bronze doors in Florence, Italy, so much so, that when Sérafin had commented on the resemblance, the Headmaster simply replied ‘Or Ghiberti’s resemble mine.’ in a sarcastic but not rude way. The only response was an awed nod, as the ancient but beautiful vampire was probably right. Sérafin, who was prone to wandering, had turned her attention away from the conversating elders to look around the office in typical hick amazement at the books on built-in floor to ceiling shelves in mahogany walls around the bronze doors and the two walls opposite each other aways back behind the couches. There were two identical burgundy chesterfield velvet couches directly middle of the private office, and in between those, a mahogany table that held deeply carved lion heads and bared teeth with majestic lion paws as its feet, and heraldic crests carved into each side and leg. The top was left smooth with brochures, a thumbprint clear glass fruit bowl holding: bananas, grapes, apples, and oranges and a glass pitcher that had four small matching glasses on a sterling silver vintage tray on top. There were bronze romanesque candelabras between each vertical break in the mahogany shelves and it truly felt like Sérafin had walked into the romantic period frozen in time. Having a seat on the couch in a flop, the young hybrid looked to the only wall free of the shelves where there was a doctorate, Ph. D, certificate of excellence, and a picture of the first graduating class that had the Headmaster putting bunny ears up behind a dark skinned man who was turned towards them with the happiest look on their face, hanging in between two candelabras at opposite ends to the left and right. The mahogany desk that had a flat top with an emerald shaded desk light bar, a gold pen, one of those fancy schedule books with the notepad and a sticky note set of pink, yellow and baby blue atop hand carved egg-and-dart molding with open mouth lions and ornate lattice scrollwork at the bottom, in front of the desk were the two mahogany armchairs with burgundy velvet cushions and backing her parents sat in and the only thing out of place by design was the burgundy velvet hand-carved royal court symbols and keeping with theme, even more growling lions decorating the mahogany throne chair with its coat of arms topper, the Headmaster sat in opposite them. Sérafin knocked softly, and was instructed to enter… yup it still looked the same as two months ago and still blew her away. I don’t dhink I’l ever get used to dis. The Headmaster as gorgeous as ever in their extravagant garb, looked up, born a man though dressing far from it, and beautiful nonetheless. Especially when those crystal blue eyes regarded you. When Sérafin had come for the visit with her parents they had been grasping at straws. The elite school was far beyond their kind of money. Granted their pack was the largest in Louisiana, it did not mean more money. They weren’t broke broke, but due to size, they kept the schooling close to home. Their financials were enough to cloth, shelter, and feed over two hundred plus wolves and with the now merging coven, a hundred extra bodies. Sérafin recalled looking up sharply at the Headmaster during the meeting; they had proposed a scholarship based on Sérafin’s grades from previous schooling and status as a princess. ‘Well we can’t very well turn away a princess or a chance at making history with the first enrolled hybrid now can we? Sérafin, do you mind showing me your magicks?’ My mother had looked worried at this, mostly because I would be drawing from my own energy to cast, which was almost unheard of. Almost. I had jumped at the chance to show off though. ‘Ok’ I loved my herbs and sacred rituals but what my parents didn’t know was that my wolf was a greater spirit that I had formed a contract with on my twenty-second birthday. Its magicks alone, stronger than any bloodline. I closed my eyes and breathed deeply connecting to everything and envisioned water forming in my hand as a ball opening my eyes to a shocked Headmaster. After that, per request of all students, a vial of hybrid blood was presented to the vampire. It was how they kept track of students and protected them while on and off the property. The Headmaster sat that gold pen down and sat back. “Miss Boudreaux, just who I wanted to see.” Well if that didn’t just make Sérafin feel like she was in a boatload of trouble, making way to sit in one of those fancy armchairs, those eyes boring into her. “Yes, Headmaster, I came to see you before first class like you requested of my mama and papa.” Smiling they slid back the throne with little to no effort and came to sit on the edge of their desk as she walked forward. Tilting their head with a straight face, they asked the question that Sérafin had not been anticipating, “They don’t know do they?” When Sérafin just played dumb, they just continued turning with a wave of their right hand to sit and went back behind the desk and sat back. “ Doesn’t matter, this school will provide you with all that you need on one condition.” Narrowing her eyes, Sérafin asked, “Dat is?” Sitting up they laced their fingers under their chin. “You will become very powerful and I want your word, that no matter what, you will always back the school.” “Why are you not asking my parents and why didn’t you tell dem?” “That is not my place, I pride myself on my students autonomy, when outside of it they have None due to circumstances or otherwise,” a pause,” and you, are most definitely an otherwise, my dear.” Sitting back casually, that burgundy vest with intricate gold embroider falling open to expose the matching knitted gold turtleneck underneath and gold silk tailored to their body, they spoke just the same, “ You will find a mate, and when you do, I would like to be on the receiving end of such good fortune.”
