An ‘accidental’ kiss
Van ended up fessing up to Lily about Rascal’s escape, mostly because I convinced him that he would be in more trouble if she heard about it from one of the neighbors. She worried that she should cut her book tour short and rush home, but Van assured her that he had filled in the huge holes under the fence and that we would go outside with him from now on to make sure he didn’t run off again.
I nodded as he talked to her on the phone, silently agreeing to do my part to help out on that front. None of us wanted a repeat of that sick with worry feeling we endured while Rascal was missing. Derek described the anxious fear best when he said he felt like he had swallowed a sour bowling ball the entire time Rascal was gone.
