10. Volunteers

"We should get going! It's almost seven, the announcement will be made soon." Calista said, grabbing my hand. I nod my head following her. Our father, as always was there already. "Do you think this is about the spear?" I asked in a whisper. "I don't know, but we will find out soon. Just remember what our father said. Don't tell anyone that you took it. Everything is going to be ok." She gave me a small smile. Which I return. "Good morning lovely pax-els! Hope you are all well." 'Is he insane? How can we be well after the attack of the Molox?' From my sister's expression, I could tell that she was thinking the same thing. " I wanted to tell you, that soon we will start to search for another home! Nibira is no longer safe! I have proof that a Molox was the one responsible for what happened last night! I don't want you to panic! Our soldiers are doing their best to protect all of us. But that doesn't mean that we are hundred per cent safe! No! We need to fight them while looking for another place where we can live peacefully, like before. Without to worry about tomorrow!" Murmurs could be heard from the crowd. Some agreeing with Samoa, some worrying about their families safety. "Now! I want six people to offer volunteers for travel in search of our new home. There will be three teams of two. Each team going to a different location." "Me!" A tall guy said. I knew him from the training. He was a soldier. A good fighter, I might add. "And me!" Said the blonde girl next to him holding his hand. He smiled at her and kissed her forehead before heading to Samoa's side. "I'll go too!" I find myself saying. "What?! Invi no! Please!" Calista shouted holding me back. "Sister, let me go! I need to do this!" She pulled me in a hug then let me go. " Be careful sister!" I nod at her, wiping her tears. Before I could arrive at where the other two were standing, I heard Zariel's familiar voice. "I'll go too! But I'll team up only with Invicta!" I look back at him to see him patting my sister's back in assurance. He winked at me when noticed my stare. "Thank you, young pax-els! Now we need two more!" Octava was the next to offer volunteer, but Samoa refused her, saying she needs to stay and help the general with protecting the barrier. Immediately after those two finished their little conflict, another two boys offer themselves. "Thank you all! Now that the teams are made up, we can move to the other problem at hand. Those of you who want to become soldiers, please move to the right. The rest of you who want to be either healers, blacksmiths or anything else, step to the left. Now that I'm the only Elder able to take care of those matters, things will go slower than usual for a while. I need to take care first of our safety!" Everyone agrees with him and follow his instructions. More than half of the pax-els were on the right side. "Good! Thank you! Now all of you who have a weapon already move back!" He said looking at the pax-els who choose the right side. Three-quarters of them moved back, while the others stood where they were. "Today you will choose your weapon! Be here in an hour! The rest of you can go to your training area!" "Did you hear that, Zariel? I will choose my weapon! Can you believe it?" He starts laughing at me like I was crazy! " Yeah! Finally, the great soldier will own a weapon!" He said mocking me. I slap his shoulder and join him in his laughing madness. Calista came to us, followed by our father. "Well, it seems like the most important day for you is finally here!" She said smiling like an insane person. "Yeah!" "Invi, are you sure this is what you want? To go out there?" My father asks pointing at the sky. "If you change your mind just tell me and I'll talk with Samoa. We can find someone else to go." "No! I mean you don't need to find someone else! I want to do this! I truly want to! Now off you go! I'm sure you all have things to do! I need to get ready for my weapon." "You forgot that I'm a general. So I will escort you down to the Nibira's Heart." "Yeah. I forgot about that." I said chuckling. I was so excited and nervous at the same time. What if I can't feel a connection to any crystal in there? "Father, can you tell me about the day when you choose your weapon?" I asked him a few minutes after my sister and Zariel left. "But I told you that story thousands of times. Are you sure you wanna hear it again?" He asks mockingly. "Yes, please!" He starts telling me the same story that I heard when I was a kid millions of times. Even now I'm fascinated by the way my father's eyes are glistening because of this one memory. Louds steps bought me back to reality. The ones that needed to choose their weapon were here. Time just flies so fast sometimes. "Father, we should go! People are gathering already. I don't want to be the last one!" "Oh, alright. You know how this story makes me forget about everything." "Father! What if I don't feel it? The connection. What I can choose a weapon." His eyes softened and he smiles a warm smile. Like the one he used to show me when I got hurt as a kid. "You don't have to worry about that, Invi! Everyone has a crystal in there! Nibira’s Heart is connected to all of us. And you! You are a War Angel! You are more connected to it than you can imagine. Believe in yourself, daughter!"
