Invicta pov.
The pain in my sister's voice made my heart ache. I looked away, ashamed for letting our mother die like that.
"Answer me!" she shouts. "What do you mean?"
My father stepped forward trying to grab her hand, but she immediately pushed him away.
"Just answer my question!"
He looks at her with pain in his eyes. "Your mother is dead, Calista! A Molox killed her! I'm sorry!"
She didn't say anything to us. Just took a glance at me, then with trembling hands, she slammed the door in our faces.
I tried to go after her, but my father stops me.
"Maybe we should go home. Just give her some time to process the news."
I nod and follow him home. I need to wash. This uniform made me sweat too much.
After I close the door of my bedroom, I went into the washroom and turn on the cold water. I take my clothes off and start brushing my skin with a damp cloth.
I close my eyes enjoying the soothing sensation.
Then I remember this day from when I was around seven years old. Two young girls playing, jumping around in a field full of red flowers. Poppies. Their laugh could be heard from a mile away. They both looked so happy. A few feet's away the most gorgeous woman and a very handsome man were watching the sundown. They looked so in love.
"Come on sister, let's pick some poppies for mother! It seems like our father is too busy to admire her." Calista said to me, and we both start laughing.
She carefully picked the most beautiful poppies, knowing that they were our mother's favourite. I on the other side I grabbed everything that was within my reach.
We race to our parents and both of us handed the flowers to our mother.
"Look at these, Belatrox. I've never seen any flowers more beautiful. Thank you, girls!"
A loud knock on my door wakes me up from my daydream.
"Invicta! Invicta!"
"What's the matter father, why are you shouting like that?" I ask putting my clean clothes on.
"I've been here calling your name for the last ten minutes and you didn't answer. I was worried about you! Are you ok?"
"Mmm.Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine, father! What time is the meeting going to be held?"
"It starts in twenty minutes! I'll meet you there!"
"Ok!"
I head to the kitchen and drink some ice-cold water. I feel so hot.
"Invicta? Are you ready?" I heard Zariel yelling from the street.
"What are you doing here?" I ask getting out of the house.
He scratches the back of his head and chuckle. "Well, your father asked me to make sure you are not late this time!"
"I see. Then come on! Let's go! We don't want to annoy great Samoa with our misbehaviour, don't we?"
We both start laughing, heading to the Sacred Chamber.
Before we got inside, Zariel stops me. "How is Calista? Did she find yet about your.. you know what I mean."
"Yeah. Yeah, she did! She is mad at us. Maybe especially at me."
"I get that she is mad? But why would she be mad at you? It is not your fault, Invicta! You need to stop blaming yourself. Do you hear me?"
He was now holding both of my shoulders, being so close to me. I look into his eyes to see them full of worries.
"Ok! I'll try!" I said after a moment.
"Promise?"
"Yes, Zariel! I promise!"
"Ok then, let's go!"
We went into the building to find everyone waiting for The Elders. It was a tradition. No one young or old could sit down before The Elders did.
"Welcome everyone! Please sit!" Samoa said from behind the red curtain that serves as a door.
We all sit down. There were about twenty people in the room presently.
"I asked you to come here today, to discuss our biggest problem. Molox! They accomplished to destroy almost half of Nibira, killing our loved ones. But we will need to find a solution before they will come back!"
"How are you so sure they will?" Octava, my father's right hand, asked.
"I'm not! But I want us to be prepared for the worse."
She just nodded.
"So today I will ask you, general Belatrox to take care of the barrier. It will be your responsibility to protect it. Octava will help you! Pick your best soldiers and make sure someone is supervising the barrier all the time.
My father bowed his head in agreement.
" Now! As we got a War Angel among us, we need to make sure she will be able to defend herself and protect us in the upcoming battles. Hopefully, there won't be any. So she will start a very intensive training from tomorrow morning! Zariel will help her!"
I look at my best friend without saying anything. he smiled at me and blinked, making me smile back.
"Invicta and Zariel will also train in our transportation field."
My eyes widened at his words. This is all I dreamed about. To be a soldier and a transporter. 'Mom, I hope you can see this!'
"After the meeting go to Octava! She will give you a new uniform! One deemed for a War Angel!" Samoa said looking at me.
The door opened making all the heads turn out.
"Calista? What are you doing here? You should be in bed." My father asked, walking in the way.
"Forgive me for the intrusion! But I'm sick of staying like a useless potato all day!"
"No need to worry, Calista. You were one of the best soldiers we had. Tell me, what can I do for you?" Samoa said.
She stepped forward, looking only to where The Elders were sitting. "I wanted to ask you to let me step down from my function. I am no longer fit to fight in a battle. But instead, I will like to train as a healer. I still want to help our people. In a way or the other."
