The next morning Claudya woke up all fresh and ready for a new day. She slept like a baby, even though she had dreamed about Nick all night. The sequel of what might have been if her mother hadn't been bursting into them.
She was almost waltzing, trying to get dressed and do the morning rituals. When she went down, her mother looked at her with a raised eyebrow.
"And what is happening with you all cheered up? Is it from a certain boy last night?"
Claudya went to make herself a cup of coffee and only smiled back at her mother, not giving her a straight answer.
Her mother waited for her to sit down and, with a serious air, looked at her.
"You need to be careful, my dear. I am beyond happy that finally someone caught your attention and took you out from the shell you had wrapped around you, but please be careful. I don't want you to get hurt."
Claudya put aside her cup of coffee and took her mother's hands.
"Don't worry about me, mom. That is true, I like him and he tries to get my attention. But it is a long way to hurt me. For that, I should care enough." Claudya tried to comfort her mother, and looking at her she succeeded. But for her ears, the words were empty.
'I think I have already fallen for him. He is a handsome devil.'
After talking with Claudya about her worries, Beatrice felt more at ease. She knew her daughter was a smart girl, but she also knew she had a big heart and people could take advantage of her bad.
Her mother raised to take her cup in the sink gave Claudya a wave and a goodbye and she went to work.
Claudya remained with her coffee getting colder and thinking that it had been maybe months since she drank her coffee in the morning with her mother when she heard a horn outside.
She went to the door to see who it was and there was her dream from last night, in the flesh under the warm morning sun. She felt an involuntary smile for him.
"Are you ready?" he asked.
She was a bit in shock but recovered fast.
" I am out in a minute."
She returned to the house to take the last sip of coffee and for her handbag. She could not think that he took her by surprise. Even though he told her he would come to take her to school, she was still surprised. And a bit deranged by the fact that people will notice her now, and will start talking. Now that was a real problem. She went out not wanting to let him wait for more, even though she was torn in two. One part was happy that he came, the other one, well, not so happy.
She went straight to him and poked him with her finger in his chest.
"What do you think you are doing?" she asked. From the door, he decided to take the side of the not-so-happy. He went to her. He was just too distracting.
He smiled at her while looking at her hand, pushing the finger to throw at his chest.
"What do you mean? I want to take you to school," he replied. "I said I would come to pick you up, so I did."
"But why?" she wasn't giving up. "I have known you for such a short time, I made you clear that I didn't want your attention, and still...here you are!" she finished with a frustrated voice.
He took her chin and raised her to look each other in the eyes.
"You want to keep fighting here in the middle of the street like a pair of lovers or would you like to enter the car and we will talk to the school?"
Claudya slowly looked aside and saw two of the most gasping neighbors looking at them. She was pretty sure that by the end of the day she would be married and have three children. That was the problem with the small neighborhoods.
She went inside the car after he held the door open for her, like a real gentleman, and after he occupied his side, he left, not waiting any more minutes.
For a few minutes, there was silence in the car but Claudya would still want an answer and would not let him get away easily with it.
"So, why?" she asked.
He turned his head at her but was still careful on the road and gave her that devilish smile that would make her knees tremble and the butterfly in her stomach want to fly away.
"I like you. A lot. And I want to know you better," he answered,
Claudya's palms got sweaty and her pulse started running like crazy. She had a hint, of course, that he was interested in her, but hearing him speaking out loud, was another thing. She wasn't used to this type of attention, for sure.
Claudya remained in silence, not knowing what to say. She was thinking frenetically about what to do. To give him access to her, cut the roots before anything more serious could develop? But for the second option, she was sure he would not lose his persistency. It seems he is quite stubborn when he wants something.
She was so deep in her thoughts that she almost got scared when she heard him speak,
" Would it be that hard to accept I like you? And you cannot tell me you don't feel anything for me because I will not believe it. Your body says otherwise, and I would be happy to show you again as proof."
Claudya felt her cheeks ignite and was swallowing hard. The temperature in the car rose a few degrees.
She sighed when she saw they had arrived at school. The moment Nick parked the car she jumped out like something on the chair she was sitting on. She felt the need to put some distance between them, to clear her mind a bit, but she wasn't that lucky. She felt a hand grabbing her gently and she knew immediately it was him.
She turned to him, almost bursting into tears.
"Let me at least think about everything that you said. If we take this road there will be no turning back."
He squeezed her hand a bit harder just to make his statement.
"I don't want to think about anything, Claudya. I want everyone to know you are mine and to nobody else."
Claudya tried to push him for a bit of space but it was like trying to move a wall of bricks.
"You don't understand!" she tried to reason with him in a lower voice, "I am invisible in this school. I am too cowardly to stand out in any way and you saw what happened the first time you came to this school! And that was me being invisible. Dating the hottest guy in school will not help me too much." she ended with a sad voice.
"Of whom are you afraid of Claudya? Except for those idiots that I will personally take care of?"
Claudya looked into his eyes and saw there the fire that seemed to come out from the bottom of his soul, but with a different purpose now. To take care of what was his.
Widout gave him a straight answer because she didn't have one. She grabbed his neck and did something she had wanted to do for some time now. She kissed him well to feel his soft lips again.
