The Abandoned Bridegroom
Now, where might he be?
Elena's voice cracked. Just a little. Enough for her cousin Mia to notice.
“Mom, seriously. Where is he? Her mother, Patricia, was already stabbing at her phone screen, heels clicking a nervous rhythm against the marble floor. "I’m calling him again. Hold on.”
Behind them, the bridesmaids huddled like nervous birds. One of them…Chloe, Elen’s college roommate whispered loud enough for everyone to hear: "He is not here yet; it’s been an hour.”
“Late?” Elena turned around fast, the skirt of her dress swishing hard against the floor. “Late is ten minutes. Late is traffic. This is… this is something else.”Patricia held up a hand. “He is not picking up.” “Not picking up?” Elena felt her stomach drop, like that one time on a rollercoaster in high school. “What do you mean, not picking up? Call him again.”I did. Three times."
“Then call Daniel's mom….Call his brother. Call…Elena.” Patricia lowered the phone. Her lipstick was smudged at the corner she'd been biting her nails again. "Daniel is unreachable.”
The words hung there, ugly and heavy.”No.” Elena shook her head. “No, that's not what he promised. He promised me. Under the cherry blossom, remember? He said,, “Nothing is going to mess this day up. Nothing.'”
Mia touched her arm. “Maybe he's just stuck in traffic? Or his phone died?”“He's an hour late to his wedding, Mia.” Elena laughed, but it came out wrong brittle, like it could snap. “Phones don't die for an hour.”
Downstairs, the music kept playing. Soft little string notes were floating through the air like nothing was wrong, like the groom had just vanished off the face of the earth.
Elena walked down the grand staircase because what else was she supposed to do? Stand upstairs forever? Wait for a man who wasn't coming?
Every head turned. Cameras flashed. Someone's aunt whispered loud enough to echo through the whole hall: “Where's the groom?”Patricia gripped Elena's arm so tight till it left little crescent moon marks. “Smile, baby... Please... Just keep smiling.“Mom, he's not here.” “Smile first then panic later”. So Elena smiled. Her cheeks ached.. Her eyes burned. But she smiled. Step by step down that stupid staircase, past the roses, past the candles, past all those faces staring at her like she was a real reality show they couldn't turn off.
Behind her,, the murmurs started.
"Did he leave her?"
“My cousin's wedding had a no-show once. Turns out the gentleman ran off to Costa Rica with the caterer.”
“No way.. Daniel? He seemed so in love.”
“Seemed.”
Elena's chest felt like someone was sitting on it. Stop talking. All of you. Just stop.
She reached the altar. Empty. Obviously. Her dad wouldn't look at her. Her mom kept whisperingto her phone, hissing thing’s like “find him” and “I don't care who you wake up.”
Then,
The doors at the back of the hall burst open. Not dramatic, like a movie. More like someone had shoved them so hard the handles hit the walls.
Elena nearly jumped out of her skin. And in walked Adrian Shaw.
God, he was big…Not tall in the way Daniel was tall. Daniel was lanky, soft, easy to hug.. Adrian was the kind of big that made you want to step backwards. His suit was black, severe, and without a tie. His jaw was set like he'd been chewing on rocks all morning. His eyes dark, cold, scanning the room like he was looking for someone to challenge. No one met his gaze. Not even the caterers.
“Adrian?” Elena's voice came out small. “What are you…where's Daniel?”
He didn't bow…Didn't say so; sorry for your trouble. Didn't even pretend to care about the ceremony. He just walked straight to the altar, stopped in front of her, and said loud enough for everyone to hear:
“Daniel's not coming.”
Patricia stopped mid-text.. The violist missed a note. Somebody in the back let out a low whistle.“Excuse me?” Elena whispered.Adrian didn't blink…“He's gone. Left town three hours ago…Didn't tell anyone. Not me, not Mom, not his best man. Just packed a bag and left.”
“That's not true.” Elena's voice cracked again, worse this time. “He wouldn't!”
“He did.” Adria's's voice dropped lower, quieter, just for her. “The flight's already been tracked. He's in Cabo with a girl named Jenna from his office.”
The room erupted.
Someone actually laughed. Someone else pulled out their phone and started recording. Elena heard her mom say “Oh my God” about four times in a row. Her dad just stood there, pale as the roses on the altar.
"Jenna?" Elena repeated. "The one who always brought him coffee? I knew it. " Doesn’t matter what you knew.” Adrian cut her off. “Here's what matters. In about ten minutes, the press outside is going to figure out that the groom ran off.. By tomorrow morning,, your face is going to be on every tabloid from here to New York. “Jilted bride.” Humiliated heiress. Left at the altar.” He tilted his head.. "That's's what you want?"
“No. Obviously not.” Elena’s hands were shaking. “But what am I ssupposed to do? Marry you?”
Adrian's mouth twitched. Not a smile. Something harder. “Funny you should mention that.”
She blinked...“What?”
“You heard me.” He stepped closer. Close enough that she could smell his cologne. Something sharp, expensive, like cedar and danger. “You marry me right now.. in front of all these people. We tell them Daniel stepped aside because he knew we were meant to be. A little messy, sure…But fixable.”
"You’re insane.”
“Maybe.” He shrugged... “But your family's company is about to go under, Elena. You know it. I know it…Half the board knows it. The only reason Daniel was marrying you was to keep your dad's investors from pulling out. But Daniel's gone. So now what?”
Elena's mom grabbed her arm again…Harder this time. “Elena. Say yes.”
“Mom?”
“Your father's retirement. Your brother's tuition… The house. All of it, gone. If this falls apart tonight.” Patrcia's voice was raw, desperate. “Please, baby. Just say yes.”
Elena looked at her dad. He still wouldn'tn't meet her eyes. Just stared at the floor like it held all the answers.
She looked back at Adrian. “You don't even like me.”
“I don’t need to like you.” He said it so casually. Like it was obvious. "I need a wife. You need a groom….
Same thing.
“It's not the same thing!”
“It is tonight.” He held out his hand. “So what's it going to be? Public humiliation for the rest of your life? Or me?”
The room got quiet. Someone coughed. A camera clicked.Elena's heart was pounding so hard she could feel it in her teeth. Every part of her wanted to slap his hand away. To scream. To run out those doors and never look back. But her mom was crying now. Quietly. And her dad looked old…so much older than he had this morning. She thought about the house.. About her little brother's college application.. About the way Daniel had kissed her forehead last week and said, “Don't worry. I’ve got you.”
Liar.
Slowly, like her handweighed a hundred pounds, Elena reached out. She didn't take Adrian’s hand. Not yet.
Instead, she looked him dead in the eye and said, "If I do this….if I marry you…you save my family. All of it. The company, the house, everything."
“Done.”
"And you don't touch me. Not tonight.. Not ever, unless I say so."
His jaw tightened. But he nodded.. “Agreed.”
“And you find Daniel. You bring him back here, and you let me punch him in the face.”
For the first time all night,, Adrian almost smiled. “I can arrange that.”
Elena took a breath…Let it out slowly.
Then she put her hand in his.
“Fine,” she said, barely loud enough to hear. “I'll marry you.”
The room went silent for one long heartbeat. And then, chaos!
