Chapter 6 – Mastery and Secrets

587 Words
The palace gardens were bathed in soft morning light, and the fountain’s water sparkled like liquid crystal. Lyanna paced the stone paths, her palms tingling with the fading glow of her magic. Each pulse of light made the leaves shimmer, and even the birds seemed to pause mid-flight, as if the world itself were holding its breath. Aric watched silently from the balcony above, arms crossed, expression unreadable. “You’re improving,” he said, voice calm but precise. “Faster than I expected.” Lyanna’s cheeks flushed. “I… I’m trying. But I still feel unsure. What if I fail?” “You won’t,” he replied, stepping closer, the sunlight catching the pale angles of his face. “The shadows feed on fear, not on mistakes. Your strength comes from your heart. Remember that.” She glanced up at him, her heart skipping. The warmth from his gaze spread through her chest, stronger than the magic in her hands. She quickly looked away, focusing on the glow instead. A rustle among the hedges made her flinch. From the shadows, a small, cloaked figure stepped out—a messenger from the royal court, bowing low. “Princess Lyanna,” the messenger said softly, “the council wishes to speak with you. There are… questions about your role as the Lightbearer.” Lyanna’s stomach clenched. Already? She wasn’t sure she was ready for palace politics. Aric’s hand brushed hers gently. “Stay calm,” he said. “I will be there with you. But remember, not everyone in this palace wants the cursed prince saved… or for the Lightbearer to succeed.” Her pulse quickened as they walked through the palace halls. Tapestries depicting ancient battles and heroes of old lined the walls, their colors rich but faded. Servants hurried past, whispering, their eyes wide with curiosity. Lyanna felt like an intruder in a world she had never belonged to—but also like she had finally found her place. As they entered the council chamber, the murmurs grew louder. Faces turned toward her—some curious, some skeptical, others openly hostile. Lyanna’s palms tingled, and she clenched them to keep the glow steady. Aric leaned close. “Remember what I taught you. Let the light flow, and don’t let doubt take hold.” Lyanna nodded. I will protect him. I will master my light. No matter what comes. The council stared, silent for a long moment. Then a tall man with sharp eyes and a stern expression stepped forward. “So, you are the girl the prince trusts with his life,” he said, voice echoing in the high chamber. “Do you even understand what that means?” Lyanna took a deep breath, letting her light pulse gently from her hands. “I may not understand it all yet,” she said steadily, “but I will do everything in my power to protect Prince Aric.” A faint murmur ran through the room. Aric’s eyes softened as he studied her. “See?” he whispered. “Strength comes from courage, not from knowing everything.” Lyanna felt a flicker of pride, but also a surge of responsibility. The shadows were still out there, the palace held secrets, and the life of the prince depended on her. She was no longer a village girl—she was the Lightbearer, and she would rise to meet her destiny. A small spark of something else stirred in her chest, something she didn’t fully understand. Hope… and maybe more.
