Chapter 1 – A Spark in the Dark
The village of Valewood lay quiet under the silver light of the moon. Its cobblestone streets shimmered faintly, and the scent of damp earth mingled with blooming nightflowers. Lyanna Vale walked home from the market, her basket swinging gently by her side. She had lived all seventeen years in this village, where life was simple, predictable… and utterly ordinary. Her mother had always told her that ordinary was safe. But Lyanna had never felt safe in her ordinary life. A restless spark inside her longed for something more—something extraordinary. Tonight, though, she had no idea that the extraordinary was about to find her. A sudden chill swept through the air, and Lyanna shivered. From the corner of the square came a faint, almost whispering voice. “Lyanna…” Her heart skipped a beat. She spun around, eyes wide, but the streets were empty. The shadows of the village houses stretched long and black, and her own breathing sounded far too loud in the quiet night. Then she saw him. Near the old fountain, a figure lay motionless, pale as moonlight. His black hair fanned around his face, and his eyes—icy, piercing—glimmered even in the dim light. Lyanna froze, basket slipping slightly from her hand. Something about him felt… wrong, yet impossible to ignore. She hesitated for only a heartbeat before her instincts kicked in. Her hand reached out almost of its own accord. When her fingers brushed his chest, a warm, golden light flared from her palm, spreading like liquid sunlight. The prince gasped, eyes snapping open in shock and confusion. “Who… are you?” he whispered, voice trembling like a leaf in the wind. “I—I’m Lyanna…” she stammered, stepping back as the glow dimmed. Her heart pounded in her chest. “Are you… hurt?” The energy between them hummed, invisible but undeniable. Lyanna felt it deep in her chest—a pull, a connection she couldn’t explain. And in the prince’s gaze, so icy and unreadable, she saw something fragile: hope. But the moment was fleeting. A shadow slithered at the edges of the square, dark and hungry, its presence cold and menacing. Lyanna’s stomach clenched. Whatever this was, it was drawn to the prince—and now to her as well. “Lyanna…” the boy repeated, voice weak but urgent. “You… you shouldn’t be here. It’s dangerous.” “I… I didn’t know,” she whispered, but even as she spoke, her fingers tingled with the fading glow. She didn’t understand it, but a part of her knew: this light came from her. It came from her. The prince struggled to rise, and Lyanna caught him, feeling the weight of his frailty. His lips moved as he tried to form words, but all that came out was a hoarse whisper: “Only you can save me…” Lyanna’s heart froze. Save him? A simple village girl, and she was supposed to save a cursed prince? Yet as she looked into those piercing eyes, a strange determination stirred inside her. This was no ordinary night. This was the night her life changed forever. And she had a feeling—deep in her bones—that she could never go back to being just “ordinary” again. The shadow moved closer, and the world seemed to grow colder around them. Lyanna tightened her grip on the prince and whispered, almost to herself, “I don’t know how… but I will save you.”
