CHAPTER 1 THE NEW SECRETARY
The rain poured heavily over Manila, turning the city lights into blurred streaks against the glass windows of towering buildings.
Elena Cruz stood in front of Villanueva Global Holdings, clutching the strap of her old brown handbag.
For a moment, she simply stared.
The building looked more like a palace than an office.
Forty-five floors.
Marble walls.
Golden company logo shining brightly above the entrance.
People in expensive suits walked confidently through the revolving doors while luxury cars lined the driveway.
Elena swallowed.
She felt completely out of place.
Her black skirt was neatly ironed but old.
Her white blouse had been repaired twice by her mother.
Her shoes had tiny scratches that she hoped nobody would notice.
She took a deep breath.
"Kaya mo 'to, Elena."
She needed this job.
Her mother sold vegetables in the public market.
Her father had died when she was sixteen.
Since then, life had become a daily struggle.
Every peso mattered.
Every meal was planned.
Every tuition payment felt impossible.
Yet somehow she had managed to graduate with honors and was now pursuing her master's degree.
Today was supposed to be a fresh start.
A better future.
A chance to finally escape poverty.
She walked inside.
The cold air-conditioning immediately greeted her.
Everything looked expensive.
Crystal chandeliers.
Shiny marble floors.
Elegant furniture.
The receptionist smiled politely.
"Good morning, ma'am."
"Good morning. I'm Elena Cruz. New executive secretary."
The receptionist nodded.
"Mr. Villanueva is expecting you."
The name alone made her nervous.
Everyone knew Adrian Villanueva.
Business magazines called him the youngest billionaire in the country.
News channels constantly interviewed him.
Investors admired him.
Competitors feared him.
Women adored him.
At thirty-eight years old, he had already built an empire worth billions.
And somehow she was going to work directly under him.
The thought made her stomach twist.
An assistant escorted her to a private elevator.
The ride felt endless.
When the doors finally opened, Elena found herself on the executive floor.
The silence alone was intimidating.
Everything looked perfect.
Too perfect.
The assistant stopped in front of a large black door.
She knocked twice.
"Sir, Ms. Cruz is here."
A deep masculine voice answered.
"Send her in."
Elena's heart nearly stopped.
She pushed the door open.
The office was enormous.
Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline.
Bookshelves filled one entire wall.
A sleek mahogany desk stood at the center.
And beside the window stood Adrian Villanueva.
Elena immediately recognized him.
Tall.
Broad shoulders.
Sharp jawline.
Dark hair perfectly styled.
A black tailored suit fit him flawlessly.
He looked exactly like the photographs.
No.
Better.
Much better.
For a second she forgot how to breathe.
Then Adrian turned.
His dark eyes landed on her.
The room suddenly felt smaller.
Elena quickly lowered her gaze.
"Good morning, sir."
"Sit down."
His voice was calm but commanding.
She obeyed immediately.
Adrian opened her résumé.
His expression remained unreadable.
"Twenty-three years old."
"Yes, sir."
"c*m laude."
"Yes, sir."
"Currently pursuing a master's degree."
"Yes, sir."
He looked up.
"How do you plan to balance work and studies?"
"I'll find a way."
His eyebrow lifted slightly.
"That's not an answer."
Elena hesitated.
Then she decided to be honest.
"I've been balancing responsibilities my whole life, sir."
Something flickered in his eyes.
Interest.
Unexpected interest.
Most applicants tried to impress him.
Most exaggerated.
Most lied.
This woman simply answered.
No drama.
No fake confidence.
Just honesty.
"Why do you want this job?"
Again, she answered truthfully.
"I need the salary."
Silence.
Then surprisingly—
Adrian laughed.
A genuine laugh.
The first one he had made all morning.
Elena blinked.
She hadn't expected that.
"You're very direct."
"I apologize if that sounded rude."
"It didn't."
For some reason, Adrian found himself studying her more carefully.
She wasn't the most glamorous woman he had met.
Not even close.
Yet there was something about her.
Something real.
Something refreshingly simple.
He couldn't explain it.
And that annoyed him.
"Tell me about your family."
Elena's smile softened.
"My mother sells vegetables at the market."
"And your father?"
"He passed away."
The room grew quiet.
"I'm sorry."
"Thank you, sir."
Adrian nodded.
He knew loss.
Everyone did.
Some simply hid it better.
After several more questions, he closed the file.
"You start immediately."
Relief flooded Elena's face.
"Really?"
"Unless you've changed your mind."
"No, sir."
A small smile escaped her lips.
The smile caught him off guard.
Strange.
Very strange.
For years Adrian had surrounded himself with beautiful women.
Models.
Actresses.
Socialites.
Women who competed for his attention.
Yet somehow the genuine happiness on Elena's face felt more beautiful than any expensive smile he had ever seen.
He immediately pushed the thought away.
Ridiculous.
She was an employee.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
"Your desk is outside my office."
"Thank you, sir."
As Elena stood, the door suddenly opened.
A stunning woman entered.
Elegant designer dress.
Diamond earrings.
Perfect makeup.
Confidence radiated from every step.
Elena instantly recognized her.
Victoria Villanueva.
Adrian's wife.
One of the country's most admired socialites.
Victoria smiled warmly.
"You must be the new secretary."
"Y-yes, ma'am."
"Welcome."
Elena smiled politely.
Victoria walked toward Adrian and kissed his cheek.
The simple gesture reminded Elena of something important.
This man was married.
Happily married.
At least according to the media.
And she was simply his employee.
Nothing more.
Nothing less.
Yet as she left the office, she couldn't ignore the strange feeling lingering in her chest.
Perhaps it was admiration.
Perhaps nervousness.
Perhaps something else entirely.
Outside, Elena sat at her new desk.
She looked through the window overlooking the city.
A smile slowly formed.
For the first time in years, hope felt real.
She didn't know what the future would bring.
She didn't know how deeply her life would become connected to Adrian Villanueva's.
She didn't know that love, heartbreak, betrayal, and success awaited her.
Right now she was simply a poor girl chasing a dream.
And inside the office behind her, Adrian Villanueva stared through the glass wall at his new secretary.
For reasons he couldn't understand, he found himself watching her longer than necessary.
Dangerous.
Very dangerous.
But neither of them knew that yet.
To Elena, he was merely her boss.
To Adrian, she was merely another employee.
Or so they both believed.
