Chapter 1: The Phosphorus Waltz
The scent of rotting cherries hit Ash Connor when his blast ax finally breached the warped ventilation shaft. This was the third mysterious fire this month. The superheated backdraft knocked loose his respirator's clasp just as electric-blue flames surged up the elevator shaft. His thermal imaging device shrieked a warning, but the orange human silhouettes dancing across its display showed an empty evacuation route. "Captain! The load-bearing walls are crystallizing!" The rookie's voice quivered through the radio. Ash tore away the heat-resistant cloth at his throat, salt-laden sweat dripping onto his turnout gear. Glass shards rode the winds thirty-seven stories up, and for a moment he heard that haunting metallic groan again—the same sound rusted steel had made when his father stuffed him into a ventilation shaft seventeen years ago, as their factory burned. "Get the tactical team to the safe zone." He unclipped the rappelling carabiner from his belt. "I'll verify if anyone's still trapped in Section B." Piano music suddenly pierced the inferno. Ash's boots slipped on the smoke-filled stairwell, melted epoxy flooring gripping at the treads. The melody drifted from the burning banquet hall—Chopin's "Raindrop" prelude. Now it mingled with the crackling collapse of wooden ceiling panels, transforming into some hellish requiem. When the carved doors burst open from the pressure wave, he saw someone standing at the grand piano. Impeccably tailored black suit, a scalpel catching cold glints in the firelight. Latex-gloved fingers caressed the keys while a charred corpse lay on the scorched music stand, frozen in a boxer's stance. "I suggest turning off your thermal radiation detector," the man said without turning. "The electromagnetic interference here is strong enough to expose Kodak film." Ash's pupils contracted sharply. A titanium glint flashed from the stranger's right ear—the signature of military-grade bone conduction hearing aids. As a burning chandelier crashed down, Ash lunged to drag this madman to safety, only to find his wrist locked, and his body slammed against scalding marble. "Breathing too fast, pupils dilated beyond the warning threshold," the man's knee pinned down Ash's turnout straps. "Need a sedative, Captain Connor?" As flames formed a vortex crown above them, Ash made out the name on the badge—Dr. Sebastian Vale, Special Consultant, Criminal Investigation Bureau.
