Zara sat in her room, the quietness squeezing in on her like a vice. She was unable to remain here anymore, she couldn’t get through one more day in this house loaded up with disloyalty and hypocrites. Her dad had gone with his decision, and now she had to make hers.
She waited until the house hushed up, until she was certain everybody was sleeping. Then, she crawled into Alex’s room.
“We are leaving,” she murmured earnestly, shaking him to wake up.
“What? Where?” Alex’s voice was drowsy, but there was fear in his eyes.
“Anywhere else but not here,” Zara answered, her voice firm. “We can’t stay here, Alex. Dad’s sending us to aunt Ruth tomorrow. I’m not letting him dump us somewhere else where we don’t belong.”
Alex hesitated, but the desperation in Zara’s eyes made him nod in agreement.
“Okay. Let’s go.”
They carried what little they could, cautiously not to utter a sound. As they got out of the house, Zara took one final moment and glanced at the spot she had once called home. Now it was not a safe haven, but a jail she was at long last breaking free from. Connected at the hip, she and Alex strolled not too far off. They didn’t have any idea where they were going, but it didn’t make any difference. The only thing that made a difference was that they had one another, and together, they would figure out how to survive.
As they walked down that almost empty road, the rain pouring down their pale skin. Filling their hearts with hope of finding happiness and peace again. At this point, they were already far enough away from their hopeless home. But one question was stuck in their minds repeating itself over and over again.
“Zara, where will we go?” Alex asked, his voice below a whisper.
And that question was like a punch in Zara’s mind. What I’m going to do, how will this even work. What I’m I even going to tell him. She started soliloquizing herself.
When all over sudden, her thoughts were interrupted by a loud scream.
“Za … Zara…. Help!” As she turned her body to the direction of where the scream was coming from, her eyes locked with the eyes of a gigantic man, his demeanor icy cold. It was dark but, his ugly face was impossible to miss.
“Well, well. What a pretty thing.” The man exclaimed, with his deep heavy voice.
“Where are you both going this late, where is you mommy. What a lucky day.” He went on as he strangled Alex with his arm.
“We…. We don’t want trouble sir.” Zara cried; her voice thick with terror. “I will give you everything you want sir just let him go, let us go.”
“Huh, and what will you give me pretty thing,” he teased.
“Y. You can have my phone; I will give you money. Ju… just let him go.” She sobbed.
“I will have you too!” the man added, as he let go of Alex and went to grab Zara.
“Please. Please sir. Stop.” Zara screamed. Her face red and wet with tears. Alex stood their shocked. His words stuck in his tongue, and his body grounded. Just his eyes watching. And Zara was in the brink of experiencing the unspeakable.
The man took their phones and all the money they had. And now he was tearing Zara’s clothes as he touched and kissed her. All the hope Zara once had was fading away with every lick, touch, and pain that filled her heart. After he finished tearing her shirt open, he pushed Zara to the ground and unzipped her trouser. He then rose up to remove his trouser and enjoy the pleasure of f*****g a young pretty girl. At that desperate moment, when all hopes seemed lost, a stranger unexpectedly showed up out of nowhere, wielding a bat.
“Get the f**k away from her!” he yelled, his voice trembling with outrage and dread. The bat struck the thief, driving him to retreat right then and there.
“Are you okay dear? Did he hurt you?” the stranger asked, as she helped Zara get up from the ground. The stranger turned into a savior, saving Zara from the torture she was about to suffer. The two shaken and terrified, could barely process what had just happened. They had gotten away from one bad nightmare just to fall into another.
Luckily this time somebody was there to pull them out of the edge. They felt a mixture of gratefulness and doubt, their hearts beating with adrenaline and fear. The strangers act of kindness left them speechless, knowing they owed him more than just their appreciation.
“Thank… thank you so much sir!” Zara put forth her voice thick with emotions. “ I’m okay, no he didn’t hurt me, but he was almost!” Zara sobbed.
“You can’t stay out here. It’s not safe, where were you going? I can take you and make sure you get home safe.” He said softly, his voice loaded up with concern.
“Actually, we have nowhere to go!” Alex added.
“It’s okay, you guys can stay with me then, I have a little empty room. It’s not a lot, but its cozy.” He assured them.
Arriving at the guys home, he furnished them with a hot meal. “My name is Quinton by the way,”
“I’m Zara, and that’s my brother Alex.” They all introduced themselves, had a little talk before sleeping, and Quinton offered to help Zara find a job.
The next day, Zara and Alex finally woke up in a quiet and somehow peaceful place. Finding readymade breakfast waiting for them on the table.
“That looks so good did, did you make it?” Alex asked.
“No, I didn’t. I also thought that you made it. If it’s not us, maybe its Quinton.” Zara responded with a smile creeping on her lips.
They ate their breakfast, and chilled on the coach, watching some cartoon that kept them laughing until Quinton walked in.
“I hope you had a nice sleep, and also enjoyed the food.” He cheered.
“Yes, yes. We did. Thank you. You don’t know how much this means to us.” Zara expressed
“It’s okay, I also came with good news. I found you a job at the same club that I work at. It’s nothing fancy, but its honest work.” He promised. “ you can take your time to rest today and start working tomorrow. I bet you know where almost everything is, it’s a small place I’m sure you will figure it out. I have to go back to work, just came here to check on you guys.” He added, and then left.
As each moment passed, Alex started fostering a crush on Quinton admiring him as a hero. He was not the first guy he was attracted to but, it was different in so many ways. He felt drawn to him in unexpected and unexplainable ways, and with him he never felt ashamed of who he was and his sexuality , and was ready to come out just for him. And, to do whatever it took to win his love and affection.
Zara finally started working , she needed to work both night and day shifts at the club. To earn enough money , to be able to pay the bills and find a palace for her and Alex to stay. Her first days at work went great, better than she expected it was drama free. And her being busy freed her mind from her own dark thoughts, but the fatigue was overpowering. Working at the club during the day and at night was not as beautiful, as she had imagined, and she ended up drinking like a lush again.
“You don’t have to tire yourself Zara. I’m here and I can help.” Alex uttered.
“No pain, no gain, Alex. I have to do this, take care of you not the other way around. And I’m fine. we will get through this, okay.” Zara replied, her breath thick with alcohol.
“Take it slowly with the drinking, will you? I know I can’t stop you, but at least control yourself Zara. Please. You don’t even have to drink anymore I mean it’s just you and me and Quinton.” Alex pleaded.
“I have to go to work.” She jeered, as she put her glass of vodka down and left.
It was an ordinary Saturday night at the club, and the weekends were the dependently most active days. The music was loud, the lights were dim, and the crowd was humming with energy. Zara, slightly drunk, moved through the sea of people, trying to keep herself awake and alert. The alcohol helped numb the exhaustion, but it also made her feel a little looser, and a little more daring.
Her movements were smooth, grabbing the eyes of few men who couldn’t resist the opportunity to stare as she served drinks. “Hello darling, what about a smile with that drink?” a man called out, blazing her a smile. Zara smirked, offering an indifferent smile as she gave him his drink. “Here is your smile and I hope your tip matches it,” she teased knowing that charm always brought in more money on these nights. The tips were great this evening and she was hoping to make enough to get her and Alex get past the week without struggles.
As the night went on, the heaviness of the night started to wear on her, and then it happened, the moment she feared the most.
