The Phone Call

1125 Words
It was nearing Christmas, and Cathy had been busy with the programme that she had prepared for the pre school where she had been doing part time work. Jon never wanted her to work while waiting for the following school year, but she insisted. "I want to be able to save. I cannot live a life like this and ask you for everything that I need," she remembered herself telling him that she wants to work for a few months, before finally getting into UCLA. She just got home from the pre school when she realized that there was a huge box that was hidden under the dining table. "Anna?" she called out to her, but got no reply. She was beginning to be afraid, walked to the small foyer and searched for Anna's keys on the console table. "This is where she leaves them after she gets in," she said quietly. When she had not found anything, she ran to the living room and turned all the lights on, and heard footsteps coming near her. She was getting frightened when she felt warm hands hold her small waist. "Am I supposed to shout out of fear?" she said, trying to keep the fear in her, then turned around and saw Jon, who was still holding her. He held her hands and immediately apologized. "Catie, I am so sorry that I wasn't able to take most of your calls. Dad and I had to attend to a lot of things." She finally got her calm and smiled at him. Cathy led Jon to sit on the couch and asked him if he had eaten, then he made his way to the kitchen and brought out a box of pizza from the oven. "I did not make this, I ordered it and reheated," he told her jokingly. The two ate, and as Jon had told Cathy that he had sent Anna home for the evening. "Are you going to stay for long?" Cathy wanted him to stay, but she knew he has important matters in New York. "I'll be here, with you for the holidays." He pointed at the huge box under the dining table and assured the lady that it wasn't meant to scare the hell out of her. "Those were my belongings, I did not have enough time to pack so I asked the maids to do them for me, apparently, my travel bags are at dad's so they placed everything in a box instead." Her eyes lit up, her heart beat loudly that she could hear it. She put the pizza down on the inside of the box and kissed him. Then she said, "I thought you would leave.." before she could finish, he kissed her back, and carried her to the bedroom. He locked the door after him, and kissed her even more passionately. He put her to bed, and after he turned off the light with a switch just above the bedside table, made love with her.  ****** Cathy was still asleep under the sheets when Jon's mobile phone rang. He picked up and walked to the ensuite toilet and bath, and locked himself in. "Hi Steph, I was kind of busy," he explained. "I am going to be here for the rest of the holiday season. I have already made arrangements," she cut him off. "I was surprised when I found out that you left. Where are you staying?" He told her about his whereabouts, including the fact that he stays with Cathy. The two talked for about five minutes. They discussed the case of Attorney Morgan, the Desmondes and all others. He was so relaxed and open, speaking to Stephanie about all these issues that he had been encountering for the past couple of weeks. He knew for a fact that Cathy would support him all the way, but he always had the fear that she may judge him, and he never wanted to upset her that he opted not to tell her these things at all.  When he hung up, he got out and was shocked to see Cathy right outside the bathroom door. "I was waiting for you to finish, I need to pee." She hurriedly walked past him and got inside. Jon went to the bed and sat, thinking of why he suddenly felt guilty of having to lock himself in the bathroom just so he could speak to another woman. He deleted the record of the call from his phone and went back to bed, waited for Cathy to get out of the bathroom. After she was done, Jon invited her to have breakfast at the balcony. "When did you prepare this?" she asked. "While you were sleeping," he replied. They ate potato salad and eggplant parmigiana, with hot cups of coffee. She was very happy with the meal as she did not expect Jon to be able to cook on his own. "Are you happy, or are you surprised?" he asked her, with a smile on his face. She did not say a thing, closed her eyes and took a slice of the parmigiana. He stared at her, smiled at the gesture as she seemed to like his cooking. "None of the above," she replied. "I love it. How did you learn to cook Italian?" He smiled, and sat on the armchair across her. They ate the sumptuous breakfast speaking about things, but Jon made sure not to tell Cathy about Stephanie. When they were done eating, Cathy volunteered to take the plates to the kitchen so she could wash them. Right after she got out of the room, his mobile phone rang. It was Lee. "Is Cathy, by any means near you, sir?" he said no, and so Lee continued, "Her father, Evan Mills had called us up yesterday afternoon. He seeks protection, as he had found a few discoveries which he thinks are connected to the death of Attorney Clarence Morgan." Jon was shocked, he felt a shiver inside of him. He looked over the window, lifted the curtains to check if there is anyone who looks suspicious outside. He ran to the kitchen, saw Cathy washing the dishes, smiled at her and went to the door that leads to the hallway. As expected, it was locked. After making sure the entry points to the unit are all secured, he went to the second bedroom and locked the door. He then replied to Lee, "You have to be careful." Lee knows that these discoveries might put Evan's life in danger, so he wanted to tell Jon first before he makes a move. When they both hung up after a few minutes of talking, Jon said to himself quietly, "It can't be, no."
