Chapter One
“Congratulations Deborah Adedeji, you have been accepted to study Business administration at New York University…..” A tear fell from my eyes as I read the application letter I refused to read for a week now, out of fear.
“So, did you get in?” Stella my best friend and roommate asked as she stared at me with anticipating eyes.
“I did” I whispered still not believing what I just read.
“You did?” She asked again to be sure and I nodded my head.
“Oooohhhh!!!!” She screamed and pulled me into a bone crushing hug while I cried tears of joy.
I remember two years ago when I was still in Nigeria, after I received my acceptance letter to study business at Jefferson CUNY in New York. Of course I knew that I was going to get in because it is a community college but there was a better feeling in me than happiness. It was a feeling of a fresh start, new beginnings. I was ready to take over the world, I was ready to change my story.
After finishing high school, I applied to my dream school in Nigeria but I was rejected twice in a row. I was frustrated and tired of trying. My other peers were two years ahead of me in the university while I was at home doing nothing. I didn’t want anything less than the picture I have planned for myself. But the higher I try to climb, the lower I went. One day I woke up with a thought in mind, what if I was supposed to achieve something bigger than what Nigeria could offer me?
why don’t I try something different? A different school or a different state, better still….a different country.
I knew that with my academic performance I might not get into a school of my choice so I decided to start small. I applied to a community college. I applied for every scholarship I could find and I did it. I got admitted and left Nigeria with the hope that everything turns out for the better.
Two years later, I am right here in my dorm room, reading my acceptance letter to NYU.
With God, all things are possible.
“Oh my gosh Stella, I can’t believe we are finally going to our dream school “ I said with tears in my eyes.
“Yes Deb, finally “ She replied with the happiest smile on her face.
Stella and I met on Orientation day and we have been best friends since then.
I heard my phone ringing. It was Jennie, she was FaceTiming me. As soon as I picked the call, the anticipating faces of Jennie and josh appeared on my screen.
“So?” Josh asked
“She got in!!! ” Stella screamed from the background and their faces lit up.
“Ooooh!!” They screamed happily
“I knew you would get in “ Josh said
“Yeah” Jennie added
“Finally you, Stella and I can stay together“ She squealed while Stella and I looked at each other worriedly.
They both school at NYU and Jennie convinced us to transfer so that we can be closer. Yep, clingy best friend. But how can I tell Jennie that we can’t stay together? Ok the thing is….
Jennie and Josh are twins and Stella and I met them in our first semester of freshman year. Stella has always been a party girl so one Friday night, she convinced me to go to the club with her. It was my first time and it was an awful experience. I hated the club mostly because of the noise… I hate noise.
Anyways, Stella and I went to the bathroom. More like I dragged her with me to the bathroom because she won’t stop flirting with a guy that looked suspicious. We both found a girl that was really drunk and crying hysterically. She drunkenly explained to us how she was dumped by her high school sweetheart because he couldn’t continue their long distance relationship. After her drunken narration, she passed out. Stella and I had no other option but to take her home with us.
At first Stella was really mad at her for ruining her night but that anger was soon to fade away when the next morning, a hot stud somehow found our address claiming to have a sister with us. It was Josh. Long story short, We have all been best friends since.
Now the real reason why we can’t stay with Jennie might sound absurd but it’s a big problem. It’s because Jennie is filthy Rich. It took us a whole month of friendship to find out how filthy Rich her family was. Her family consisted of a father, mother and four Children. She has an older brother and Sister. She said she didn’t want to tell us at first because she didn’t know if she could trust us. She said that every friend she has ever had was either after her family’s power and wealth or her Brothers. Yep, she has the no dating my brother policy. Stella was really disappointed.
“Uhm Jennie?” I said with a panicked tone.
I stared at Stella and she gave me a thumbs up to continue
“Uhm, I am sorry but Stella and I can’t stay with you “ I said in one breath.
“What? Why?” She whined
“Because Deb and I can’t afford where ever you might want to stay” Stella explain
“But I already told you guys, we can just pick an apartment in one of my Dad’s apartment complexes” She replied
“We can’t afford it Jennie “ I said
“You guys won’t have to pay rent “ she replied but I shook my head
“We are your friends Jennie, we refuse to take advantage of your family’s status”
The truth is Jennie has done a lot for i and Stella. I am practically able to attend NYU because of the scholarship her father’s empire offered me. Stella on the other hand wasn’t rich when I first met her but her Mother married a very wealthy man. Now she doesn’t have to worry about Tuitions but she didn’t want anything else her step father offered her. According to her, even his son doesn’t like her and her mother. He didn’t even show up at the wedding. She wanted to prove that her and her mother weren’t after his father’s money.
“Fine, how much do you guys pay for rent? Two thousand dollars? Fine you guys can pay Two thousand dollars as rent”
“Uhm actually we were thinking of moving into a cheaper apartment…” I said
“I don’t care Deb. I don’t care if you guys pay a dollar for rent. All I know is that we are staying together and that’s final.” She said while pouting angrily.
Stella and I smiled at each other before she winked at me. All we wanted is to be sure that we were not getting rent for free.
“Fine, Anything for the princess “ Stella said and her face lit up
“Really?” She smiled and we nodded our heads
“Urrghh, Such a Baby” Josh commented and she scoffed at him
“You guys know what I am more excited about? Tonight’s party before we travel to California” Stella said.
We are all traveling to California for Jennie’s sister, Tracy’s wedding for two weeks. According to Jennie, Tracy can be really demanding. I have met her about two times and I can tell that Jennie is not wrong.
“We are going to The place” Josh said
“The club?” I asked unimpressed
“Yes Deb, the club. And you are not saying no this time” Jennie said.
‘The place’ is one of Jennie’s family’s many clubs except the Rich, famous and powerful frequent there.
“Fine and I am only agreeing because I have something to celebrate today “ I said and they cheered.
Stella couldn’t contain her happiness as she kept dancing around the room. Like I said earlier, she loves partying.
SEBASTIAN’S POV
“Dude, come on. One last Friday before LA” James whined while I was busy with the documents I was assessing.
“You know your sister Seb, she won’t let me out of her sight once we travel. I just need this night to let loose” he continued whining.
James is my best friend soon to be brother in law. He has been on my sister’s neck since middle school. She finally gave him a response when she got into college and he was in his last year.
Immediately she graduated, he popped the question and she said yes. Let’s just say this Marriage is one of the best things that has happened to both side of the family. My Parents are happy that their first daughter will be marrying the son of the mayor of New york while the Mayor of New York is happy that his son is marrying into one of the wealthiest families in New York. Me? I am also happy, I have not heard my mother’s nagging to get married for a while.
“Look James, some of us have multi million dollar businesses to take care of “ I said while still staring at the document.
“Please Seb, you cannot leave a brother hanging “ He continued to whine.
Suddenly his phone started ringing.
“Oooh, it’s Eric” He said and picked the call
“Hey man”
“Hey , you guys ready for tonight? “ Eric asked
“I am but Seb won’t budge” He said and I felt his eyes piercing my head
“Hey Seb, come on man, when last have we been to the club?”
“Last week?” I replied because it obviously not that long ago.
“Exactly and we’ve been working our asses off trying to feed millions of workers. Don’t you want to cool off the steam and get some tonight?” Eric can be very convincing when he wants to be.
“I have a girlfriend for that Eric” I said
“You mean s*x partner?” He taunted
“Same thing” I replied and they both laughed.
Eric is simply a playboy who likes getting with different girls every other night when he is not working. The attitude started in middle school when his mother left his father for a better looking guy without looking back. His father started getting with different women. He recently just married his fourth wife in ten years. Since his mother, Eric has never been loyal to any girl because he couldn’t trust anyone.
Me on the other hand, I have a partner. On a broader term, people call it dating. Except, I just keep it s****l. I never do emotions or more like I have never liked a girl enough to be emotionally attached to her. I don’t do multiple s****l partners either, I am very loyal to a girl that I decide to be sexually involved with. Maybe the prominent reason is because i am allergic to people’s touch. Not everyone but most people. I only date girls that my body doesn’t repel. I ask them out without omitting the only reason why I need the relationship, s*x. They never disagree.
Once they start asking for more, I simply end it with a big fat cheque handed to them. I mean I make them my girlfriend, I show them off as my girlfriend at events, I shower them with loads of money and s*x. What more could they ask for, love? Pssst…I have never felt anything outside of a platonic love.
Thankfully, the girl I am currently dating is perfect for every role. She knows what I want and don’t want. Naya is my immediate sister Tracy’s best friend and the daughter of my parents friends and business partners. We started dating three years ago after knowing each other for over fifteen years. I wasn’t really attracted to her at first because I just saw that little girl that plays with dolls with Tracy but one day, it just happened. I had just broken up with my then girlfriend who like the others before her wanted more.
I had just gotten to my penthouse and a very n***d Naya was in my bed. I look at three things before I ask a girl to be my girlfriend; if her touch doesn’t repel me, I love them slim thick and if she is willing to accept my conditions. Naya was everything and more. Her touch does not repel me, she is slim but thick at the waist and she already knew my conditions before I could tell her…so I just went with flow. She knew the rules and never broke them, just the way I like it.
“Come on Man, please?” James kept whining and I was fed up of his annoying voice.
“Fine I promise to go if you guys leave me and let me work in peace” I surrendered
“Deal, see you guys tonight “ Eric said before ending the call.
“Oooh I can’t wait to party!!!” James screamed as he walked out of my office.
