THE HAPPY US
*Chapter 1 – The Road to the Village* Lucas had never meant to leave the city. He was a junior architect, sent by his firm to oversee the construction of a new health clinic in the remote village of Oluwafemi. The journey was a rumble of dust and heat, the kind that made the air taste like rust. When the truck finally stopped at the edge of the village, Lucas stepped out, wiping sweat from his brow, and was greeted by a chorus of cicadas and the distant laughter of children. He was led to the modest house that would be his home for the next few months. The door opened to reveal a girl with skin the color of toasted maize and eyes that sparkled like the river after rain. She was balancing a basket of yams on her head, her hair woven into intricate braids that swayed with each step. “Welcome, sir,” she said, her voice a soft melody. “I’m Atinuke. I’ll be helping you settle in.” Lucas felt an unexpected jolt. He had expected a simple helper, not this radiant presence that seemed to belong to the land itself. Atinuke showed him the rooms, the well, the communal kitchen, and finally, the shade of a massive baobab tree where the villagers gathered at dusk. “Tomorrow we start the foundation,” she said, handing him a cool glass of water. “You’ll need strength.” He smiled, his eyes lingering on the curve of her neck as she turned to leave. The night fell, and the village sang its ancient lords. Lucas lay awake, the image of Atinuke etched into his thoughts, wondering how a city boy could feel such an instant, fierce connection. *Chapter 2 – Sparks in the Clay* The next morning, the work began. Lucas measured, directed, and tried not to stare at Atinuke as she moved between the workers, her hands deftly shaping clay bricks. She laughed when a mischievous goat stole a bundle of reeds, and the sound was like wind chimes in a storm. By noon, the sun was a blazing disc, and the workers paused beneath the baobab. Atinuke brought a bowl of fresh fruit and a pitcher of palm wine. She sat beside Lucas, their shoulders brushing. “You’re not like the other men who come here,” she said, eyes twinking. “You seem…different.” Lucas chuckled, feeling his heart race. “I could say the same about you. You’re fearless.” She leaned in, her breath warm against his ear. “Fear is for those who don’t know what they want.” The moment hung, electric. Lucas reached out, his fingers grazing the soft skin of her forearm. Atinuke’s eyes fluttered closed, and a shy smile curved her lips. The air seemed to thicken, the distant hum of the village fading into a private rhythm. When the workers returned, they found the two of them laughing, sharing stories of city lights and village fires. The day ended with a spectacular sunset, the sky painted in orange and violet. As the stars emerged, Lucas found himself stealing glances at Atinuke, his mind already racing ahead to the night. *Chapter 3 – Midnight under the Moon* Weeks passed, and the clinic took shape brick by brick. Lucas and Atinuke fell into a comfortable rhythm—working side by side, stealing kisses in the shade of the baobab, and sharing whispered promises under the moon. One night, after a long day, Atinuke invited Lucas to a traditional dance that the villagers performed to thank the earth for a bountiful harvest. The fire crackled, drums beat a primal pulse, and the villagers moved as one, their bodies swaying like the river’s current. Atinuke wore a flowing skirt of indigo, her hair adorned with fragrant flowers. Lucas, dressed in a simple linen shirt, felt out of place but was soon swept into the dance by Atinuke’s hand. Their bodies moved in sync, the heat of the fire mirroring the heat building between them. When the music slowed, Atinuke pulled Lucas close, their chests pressed together. He could feel her heartbeat, rapid and fierce, matching his own. “Lucas,” she whispered, “I have never felt this way. My life was the village, the land…but now, you are the rhythm in my heart.” He cupped her face, his thumb brushing a stray tear. “Atinuke, you have turned my world upside down. I don’t want to go back to the city. I want to stay here, with you.” The drums rose again, louder, as if urging them onward. They danced until the fire burned low, their silhouettes intertwined against the night sky. When the music finally ceased, they stood breathless, foreheads touching, the world reduced to the two of them. *Chapter 4 – Shadows of Doubt* Just as the clinic neared completion, a letter arrived from Lucas’s firm. The project had been delayed, and they needed him back in the city to lead a major urban development. The news hung over the village like a storm cloud. Lucas tried to hide his turmoil, but Atinuke saw the worry in his eyes. “What’s wrong?” she asked, handing him a steaming bowl of pepper soup. He sighed, the weight of his responsibilities crushing him. “I have to go back, Atinuke. My career…my family…they expect me.” Atinuke’s hands trembled, but she forced a smile. “You must follow your path, Lucas. The world is big, but our hearts can find each other again.” That night, they made love beneath the baobab, a fierce, desperate union that spoke of longing and fear. Their bodies moved with a raw intensity, each kiss a promise, each touch a plea. When they finally lay spent, the moon bathed them in silver light, and Lucas whispered, “I will return. I will come back to you.” The next morning, Lucas boarded the truck that would take him away. Atinuke watched from the village gate, her eyes shining with unshed tears. The road stretched ahead, but her heart remained anchored to the land and to Lucas. *Chapter 5 – A Homecoming and a Happy Ending* Months passed. The clinic was inaugurated with great fanfare, its white walls a beacon of hope for Oluwafemi. Atinuke, now the clinic’s caretaker, tended to patients with a gentle smile, but her thoughts were always on Lucas. One evening, as the sun dipped below the horizon, a familiar rumble echoed down the dusty road. The villagers gathered, curiosity turning to excitement as a sleek black car pulled up. Lucas stepped out, his suit replaced by simple linen, his eyes scanning the crowd until they locked onto Atinuke’s. She ran to him, tears streaming down her cheeks, and he caught her in his arms, lifting her off the ground. The villagers cheered, the sound mingling with the rustle of palm leaves. “I kept my promise,” Lucas whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I came back, not just for you, but for us. I’ve resigned from the firm. I want to build a life here, with you, in this village that stole my heart.” Atinuke laughed, a sound that seemed to heal every wound. “You already built a home in my heart, Lucas. Now let’s build a future together, right here.” They kissed as the village erupted in joyous song, the firelight dancing on their faces. The clinic, once a symbol of progress, became the backdrop for a new chapter—one of love, partnership, and community. Years later, the clinic bore a plaque: _“Founded by Lucas and Atinuke, lovers who bridged city and village, heart and home.”_ Children would run past the baobab, chasing fireflies, while the couple sat hand in hand, watching the sunset, their love a timeless flame that warmed Oluwafemi for generations. And so, the village girl and the city boy lived happily ever after, their love a testament to the power of destiny, desire, and the courage to follow one’s heart.
