Escape

I barely slept last night. The anxiety for today and the anxiety waiting for today and the conversation with the count kept my mind swirling. I splashed water on my face hoping to wake myself up. The exhaustion was overwhelming but I couldn’t sleep now. I decided it wouldn’t hurt to take a shower and let Cassie retest a little while more. She would need it for our escape. I undressed trying to shield myself from the guard. Luckily, he was king enough to turn his back to me once he realized I was taking a shower. I turned the knobs the water barely getting warm. At least the cold shower would shock my system into waking up. I stepped over tye brick the kept the water from flowing into the floor and gasped. The water took my breath. It was freezing. As a shifter my temperature ran high than humans so that water felt especially cold to me. After showering I tried to run the comb through my hair but without conditioner it proved to be impossible so I put it up into a high bun on top of my head. At least if was out of my face. I dressed in the same clothes I had been given when they brought me in, gray jogging pants, white socks, and a white t-shirt. Not exactly flattering but I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. My breast hurt more every day. I hadn’t fed Jordan in two days and was having to manually remove the milk from my breast. They where full of milk and it was painful but at least my milk hadn’t dried up as I wanted to continue feeding Jordan. I couldn’t wait to hold my baby girl in my arms. I was never leaving her again. I gently shook Cassie awake who was sleeping soundly on the bottom bunk. I helped her get showered and dressed. As I was putting Cassie’s thick hair up in to a high ponytail a knock on the door startled my and I jumped. I blew out a breath when I noticed the security guard who was helping us get out. I looked around making sure the coast was clear and went to the door to speak with him. He couldn’t enter because it would be to suspicious so he cracked the door so I could hear him. “Change of plans. We leave in 30 minutes. I’ll b coming by with the laundry cart. Be ready.” He whispered through the door. Panic started to set in because Greyson wouldn’t be at the pickup spot for another two hours. “I messaged the number. They know.” He added seeing the look on my face. I simply nodded my head and he closed the door. I let Cassie know to be ready. “What about my things?” She asked. “Just the bear Cassie. We can’t take anything else.” I told her. She doesn’t have much but it was all she had known for over a year Sep I understood her hesitation to leave it. “Gabby does my mama and daddy know I’m coming home?” she asked. I shook my head, “No baby. We couldn’t risk telling anyone. Even your mom and dad.” I replied. “Will I still see you after we leave here and I go home? I’d like to meet Jordy.” She asked me as I held her close trying to calm her nerves. “Of course. You don’t go through something like this with someone and not be part of their lives forever.” I reassured her. “You’ll meet Jordy because you’ll stay with me our first night out. Then we’ll take you home the next morning. And Cassie,” I started. “Look at me please,” she turned to look me in the eyes. “If something goes wrong and I tell you to run. You run. You don’t look back and you don’t wait for me. There will be a car waiting my the gate. Promise me.” I urged her. “But Gabby …” she started. “No Cassie you have to promise me.” I raised my voice so she could understand how serious it was. “I promise Gabby.” She whispered and threw her little arms round me hugging me tightly. I returned her hug and we just stayed that way while I sang to her.. Once there was a way To get back homeward Once there was a way To get back home Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry And I will sing a lullaby Golden slumbers fill your eyes Smiles await you when you rise Sleep pretty darling, do not cry And I will sing a lullaby Once there was a way To get back homeward Once there was a way To get back home Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry And I will sing a lullaby I heard the sound oft the wheels rolling on the concrete floor. It was the laundry cart and our ride out of here. “Come Cassie. Do not let go of my hand unless I tell you to understand?” I asked her. “I understand.” Her trembling voice told me how nervous she was, but I had to be stern with her this was serious. The guard came into view pushing the cart and purposefully parked it by the door while messing around on his desk. I slipped the door open and lifted Cassie into the bin and I followed keeping low the entire time and closing the door behind me. We covered ourselves with every piece of laundry that the basket contained and we laid at the bottom. “As still as a doll Cassie remember?” I asked her. She shook her head yes to scared to speak and I knocked three time on the hard part of the cart to signal that we where ready. The cart jerkede and then started rolling. I held Cassie’s hand tight. I could hear the sound of doors opening and closing until finally I felt us enter the elevator. “One more door.” The guard whispered. The elevator dinged and the cart started rolling again. I heard the click of a door and felt the guard push us threw. I knew the next door would take us outside. “Hey Jack. They got you doing laundry again?” a female voice asked. “What don’t they have me doing.” Jack the guard joked. “See you in a few Sandy.” told her. I heard the buzz of a door and the cart started rolling once more. I could hear the birds and the ocean. The sounds of nature excited me but I kept it contained squeezing Cassie's hand. “Once we get to the laundry room door a car will be waiting. You will climb in the trunk and she’ll get you through the gate.” he whispered. It wasn’t long before the cart stopped rolling. I could hear the guard speaking to a woman who I suspected was the one he was seeing that worked at the office with him and would be the one driving us out of here. “Okay it’s time. Hurry!” He urged us. The guatd helped Cassie over and into the trunk. I climbed over and got in beside Cassie holding her tight as he closed the trunk lid. The car started moving. I could hear music playing from the front. There was a buzzing noise and then the car stopped. “Hey Kenny you want anything for lunch?” she asked. “Yeah, grab me a turkey sandwich on rye.” He replied. “Alright I’ll be back shortly.” She told him. Another buzzing sound and the car started moving again. My legs were shaking and I was trying to relax them. She drove another five minutes before the car stopped and the trunk opened. I opened it and jumped out. I picked up Cassie and lifted her out shutting the trunk behind us. The woman immediately took off. Cassie and I ran with everything we had to the cover of the trees. We had to get to the east Bridge. We walked for what seemed like forever when I finally seen it. A black cat with blacked out windows sat under the bridge in the shadows. “Run Cassie!” I urged her. We took off running. Cassie kept fall I g behind so I stopped and she climbed on my back. It would have been a lot easier if she had her wolf. I ran with everything I had. Suddenly there he was. Greyson began running toward me. Tears blurred my vision and ran down my face as we crashed into each others arms. I sat Cassie down and threw my arms around him his mouth Instantly finding mine. He lifted me up and I wrapped my legs around him kissing him with everything I had. “Alright love birds we need to get out of here.” A man from the car yelled. I noticed him from somewhere but couldn’t place him. Greyson let me down and I took Cassie’s hand guiding her to the car. Greyson opened the door and we got in scooting across the seat. I could feel Cassie trembling. “Relax your safe bow.” I told her as I put my arm around her and pulled her against me.
