CHAPTER 1- A CHEATING MATE
JESSICA
My eyes almost popped out of their sockets. The "Breaking News" flash on the screen of my TV was enough to jolt me out of my train of thoughts, but what shocked me even more was the report.
"Billionaire business man, Javier Rodriguez loses half his entire fortune after ship carrying goods worth billions sinks in the Atlantic."
"There is literally no way anyone could be this unlucky," I muttered to myself.
Just a few days ago, a fire had gutted through one of his multi million dollar companies, razing it to the ground. It just seemed like bad luck had a peculiar way of following the Rodriguez family.
I shook my head in genuine pity, before turning my attention to more important matters - company matters.
I grabbed the mug of coffee on my table and emptied the contents down my throat as my eyes scanned the screen of the laptop in front of me. My line of work as the financial secretary of a big establishment like Carlson Corporations meant that I couldn't afford to slip up for a minute. My eyes always had to be on the screen, and whatever irregularities I noticed, I reported to my boss - my step mother and the acting CEO of Carlson Corporations, Rachel Carlson. My task that morning was a very crucial one. Profit had not been very good in the last few weeks, and I was determined to find the loophole.
Suddenly, my nose caught the sharp musky scent of lavender and at once, I felt a tingling in my feet. There was only one soul in the world whom I knew that carried such an awfully pleasant and invigorating scent. It was none other than my longtime boyfriend and mate, Dan Bolton. Dan was the heir to the throne of the Dark Shadow Pack, a small pack by the bank of the river, and save my dad, he was the only person in the world that mattered to me. Picking his scent around my office could mean only one thing - he wanted to surprise me as usual in my office.
As a well bred lover boy, Dan always picked the best times and gifts to lift my mood, and even though his presence was announced by his scent long before he came around, the thrill of finding out the surprise he had for me lingered on.
I waited for his arrival, with a smile forming across my lips and soon enough the scent got stronger. He was probably just outside my office now. Every single hair on my body was standing on end now. It lingered on for a few minutes and just when I thought he was purposely trying to make me go crazy, the door to my office burst open.
In shock, my eyes scanned the figure standing before me. My stepsister, Mia was definitely not the person I was expecting to see that morning. She never came to work, and my step mother, Rachel still made sure that she got her wages in full.
Mia cast me one quick disinterested glance and scoffed. In the second that her coffee brown eyes ran down my body, I could see the contempt and disgust all over her. At least, we shared one thing as step sisters - a deep feeling of hatred for each other.
"The trophy daughter," Mia hissed. "Father's favorite."
"Don't you have a job to be doing this morning?" I shot at her, in anger.
Mia shook her head in the negative and chuckled lightly.
"On my way home now, and I thought to remind you to keep your damn eyes on the profit charts," She said. "Remember your dad's life depends on how much we make."
The way she said "my dad's life" like we didn't share the same father made me cringe. How could a human be so heartless? Even to her very own father? My blood was boiling already and I could feel the rage begin to build up. I rose to my feet and pointed at the door.
"Out of my office, now!"
Mia chuckled and ran her hands down her long black hair. She eyed me for another full second before turning on her heels and cat walking out of my office.
I knew my step sister was just trying her best to get on my nerves as usual, but something told me it was different that morning. She had never come into my office to remind me of my duty before. And why did she have my boyfriend's scent all over her?
Determined to get to the bottom of whatever was going on, I rose to my feet. I grabbed my coat and pulled it on before rushing out of my office. The receptionist, a young lady, a year or two younger than me was sitting at the front desk and I rushed up to meet her.
"Have you seen my sister?" I asked, looking around cautiously. "Which way did she go?"
"Towards the car park, ma'am," She replied straightaway.
I thanked her before heading for the car park. On getting there, I was shocked to see Mia entering the passenger's seat of a deep blue Cadillac. That was Dan's car! Or were my eyes not working properly? I watched carefully from my vantage position and waited until the car started off before running down to mine.
I trusted my Dan so much, but with that witch, Mia, anything could happen. I needed to make sure that she wasn't about to harm him.
I followed them closely, but stealthily enough to make sure that they didn't notice I was following. I had absolutely no idea what my stepsister was planning, but the thrill of finally being able to expose her quickly got into my head.
Dan's car screeched to a halt at the Carlson family mansion and they came out hastily. I waited until they had both gone inside the mansion before I came out of my car, and I followed immediately. I could hear the sound of their footsteps as they doubled up the stairs, and suddenly, my heart started pounding in my chest. Beads of sweat rolled down my forehead as I considered a new possibility. Maybe it was not my step sister trying to harm my boyfriend. Maybe it was something else...
I killed the thought as quickly as it came. I had known Dan for five years now. There was no way he could be involved with another lady, worse still, the step sister he knew I hated so much.
I climbed up the stairs slowly and just when I got to the top floor, I heard the sound of my room door click shut. My heart skipped another beat at the discovery that my boyfriend and stepsister were all alone in my room.
I tiptoed up to the door and waited for a few minutes. I couldn't hear a single noise from inside and when I thought I should burst in, I heard a soft giggle. It was Mia's. And next, Dan's heavy and raspy breaths that broke my heart.
Why was his breathing heavy? Had they been kissing in there?
"What did you tell the dumb b***h?" I heard Dan mutter.
The sound of Mia's soft moans afterwards was enough to tell me that Dan was nibbling on her ears, or neck probably.
"That I was tired and needed to get some rest," Mia muttered under her breath. "I wonder how you managed to put up with that dumb piece of s**t for six whole years."
"I wonder it too," Dan said.
He resumed his kisses on her and I listened behind the door. Tears rolled down my eyes and I shook my head in disbelief. It had to be a dream. All this was not happening.
I tried my best to convince myself that I was imagining it, but even after sitting back to listen for a few more minutes, Mia's moans never stopped. As a matter of fact, they got louder, more careless, and I suddenly had the idea that she knew I was listening.
Of course, she did! She was playing the fool's game all along. She had purposely walked in my office, with his scent all over her and led me right here, all to spite me. And as much as I knew that bursting the door open to catch them together was all part of her plans, I just had to do it.
With anger coursing through my veins, I booted the door open.
My gaze met with Dan's immediately. He was leaning over her. His shaft was half buried in her and his hands pinned hers down to the bed.
"Jessica!" Dan exclaimed. He withdrew his member from Mia immediately and spun around to face me.
He looked really shocked to see me there, but Mia wasn't. There was a sinister smile on her face as she watched the drama unfold between us, and just to add fuel to the fire, she let out a soft moan.
"Come on, Danny. Don't stop now."
