Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Innocence and Resistance Alessandra De Luca sat by the window, the city stretching out beneath the fading light. The faint hum of the air conditioner filled the silence, but there was an oppressive heaviness in the air. It felt like the world was holding its breath. "Alessandra," her father’s voice broke through the quiet, sharp and commanding as always. "We need to talk." She rolled her eyes inwardly but turned to face him anyway, giving him the smile she always wore when she wanted to avoid a confrontation. "What is it, Papa?" Vincenzo De Luca stepped into the room, his presence as commanding as ever. As the head of the De Luca mafia family, he had a way of making even the walls feel like they were listening. "You’ve been spending too much time at that hospital. You’re a De Luca, and we don’t have time for such distractions. You belong here with us, not in a sterile hospital room." Alessandra’s chest tightened, the familiar ache gnawing at her. "But, Papa," she said, trying to keep her voice steady, "I love my work. I save lives. I’m doing something meaningful." He scoffed, shaking his head. "Meaningful? You think fixing broken people makes you special? It’s not enough, Alessandra. You’re meant for more than that. You’re meant to be part of this family, to be here, to help us grow stronger." Her stomach churned. "I don’t understand," she whispered, her heart breaking a little with each word. "I’m happy where I am. I’m making a difference, Papa." Before Vincenzo could respond, her mother, Sofia, entered the room. She was always poised, but there was a coldness about her, like she’d long ago learned how to keep her emotions in check. She glanced between Alessandra and her husband, her expression unreadable. "Vincenzo, don’t push her too hard," she said softly, though it lacked any warmth. "Alessandra, we’ve been meaning to tell you something important." Alessandra’s heart skipped a beat. "What is it, Mama?" Sofia’s gaze softened only briefly before hardening again. "Your marriage has been arranged," she said matter-of-factly. "You’ll stop working at the hospital soon enough, anyway." Alessandra’s breath caught in her throat, the world suddenly spinning around her. "What? What are you talking about?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. Her mother’s eyes narrowed, her tone colder than ever. "It’s already been decided. You’re going to marry Damian Moretti. He’s the boss of the Moretti family, and this union will strengthen our family. It’s the best thing for all of us." Alessandra felt as if the ground had been pulled out from under her. She stared at her mother, her body rigid with shock and disbelief. "You can’t do this. You can’t just decide my life like this!" She felt the heat rise in her chest, but her voice cracked. "I don’t know him! I don’t even want to marry him!" Sofia’s face remained unreadable. "It doesn’t matter what you want, Alessandra," she said coldly. "This is about what’s best for the family. What’s best for our future." Alessandra’s chest felt tight, her breath coming in short bursts. She wanted to scream, to throw something, anything. But instead, she found herself looking at her father, the man she had always wanted to impress, who was now giving her that same indifferent look he always had when he was sure of something. "You’ll do your duty," Vincenzo said, his voice sharp. "Like you always have." Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes, but she refused to let them fall. She clenched her fists at her sides, trembling with a mix of fury and heartbreak. "This isn’t fair," she whispered. "Why are you doing this to me?" Her parents exchanged a glance, as if they were simply confirming something that had already been decided long ago. Sofia’s voice was even colder now, almost mechanical. "Because it’s what’s best for the family. You’ll understand one day." Alessandra’s vision blurred with unshed tears, and she turned away from them, unable to bear the look of apathy on their faces. She stormed out of the room, not caring about the consequences. Once in her room, she slammed the door behind her and sank onto her bed, her body shaking with the force of her emotions. How could they do this to her? How could they just… decide her life? She buried her face in her hands and cried. Her chest heaved with each sob as the weight of everything crashed down on her. The marriage, the future that had been decided for her—it all felt like a betrayal. She hadn’t asked for any of this. She hadn’t asked to be a pawn in their power games. She heard muffled voices from the other side of the door. Her father’s voice, low and firm. "She’ll get over it. She’s just being dramatic." Her mother’s voice followed, flat and emotionless. "She’ll adjust. She doesn’t have a choice." Alessandra wiped her tears angrily, frustrated at how easily they dismissed her pain. How easily they erased her dreams. She couldn’t keep doing this. She couldn’t let them dictate her life, her happiness. No matter what, she knew one thing for sure: she wouldn’t give up her fight. --- Side Characters: Vincenzo De Luca – The hard and controlling head of the De Luca mafia family. He’s focused on power and sees his daughter’s nursing career as beneath her. He’s determined that she should be part of the family’s mafia legacy. Sofia De Luca – Alessandra’s mother, who believes in family duty above all else. Her cold pragmatism and lack of empathy make her indifferent to her daughter’s feelings about the arranged marriage. ---
