Chapter 008

1153 Words
“How did this happen?” I asked, confused. Amy stood before me, her gown stained with blood, and bandages wrapped around her right leg and left arm. “What happened, Amy?” I inquired, genuine concern filling my voice. She attempted to explain, but the words seemed to escape her. Without hesitation, I guided her inside and helped her settle into a chair. Swiftly, I locked the door behind us. As she sat there, tears streaming down her face, I couldn't help but wonder what could have happened. Almost as if she could hear my thoughts, Amy spoke. “We were in an accident on our way here. A car came speeding towards us, and we couldn't avoid it. How could all of this happen on your wedding day, Aria?” Amy sobbed, and I couldn't help but join her in her tears. “Where is Mom?” I asked abruptly, my worry mounting. “She's in the hospital,” Amy replied softly. “Why?” I shouted as I jumped up from where I was sitting, my heart racing with worry. Amy quickly tried to calm me down, her voice soothing. “Calm down, Aria. She's fine. Her friend sustained an injury, so she had to stay with her at the hospital,” she explained, her words bringing a sense of relief. But my concern for my mom was still troubling. “What about Mom?” I asked almost immediately, my voice filled with urgency. Amy's response was reassuring, yet I needed to hear it again. “She's fine, just a scratch, but she's fine,” she said, her tone comforting. With a heavy sigh, I finally allowed myself to relax, knowing that my mom was okay. I collected my phone from Amy, who had been kind enough to hold on to it for me. With trembling hands, I dialed my mom's number, hoping for a response. But there was only silence on the other end. I laid on the bed, staring at the ceiling, my mind filled with thoughts of my mom's well-being. The day came to an end without a call or message from Xavier, leaving me with a mix of emotions. Despite the uncertainty, I couldn't shake the feeling that he would be fine. But my mind continued to wander, replaying the events of the day and keeping me deep in thought. The fear consumed me as thoughts of losing him flooded my mind. The memory of Derek's death resurfaced, making me more scared. “Why me? Am I cursed?” I whispered to myself, tears streaming down my face, careful not to wake Amy, who peacefully slept beside me. I clutched onto my phone, desperately hoping for a message from Xavier or his driver, but exhaustion eventually overcame me, and I drifted off to sleep. The next morning, I was awakened by my mom's call. “Hello, Mom,” I answered, my voice filled with sleepiness. “Hello, beautiful. Where are you?” she asked. I yawned loudly and replied, “I'm at home, Mom,” stretching my tired limbs. “You shouldn't be there, Aria. You should be at your husband's house,” she insisted. “After everything that happened yesterday?” I questioned, the words escaping my lips almost immediately. “I know, I know, baby. You should be there regardless,” she said, her voice filled with understanding. “I don't even know where I am going to. I don't know anything. Everything is still hard to take in. How do I go out when I'm this scared?” I said, feeling frustrated. “Everything is in order now. I will be home soon. I love you,” she said. “I love you, Mom,” I said as I ended the call. As the day dragged on, time seemed to move at a snail's pace. Amy had gone to the hospital to seek treatment for her wounds, and my mom was still not back from her hospital visit. The house felt empty and quiet, increasing my thoughts and memories of the events that unfolded yesterday. It's hard to distract myself when my mind keeps replaying those moments. I reached for my phone, hoping for a call or message from either Xavier or his driver. However, there was nothing. No check-in, no reassurance. “He couldn't even call to check up on me? Is this the husband I want to live with?” I said, questioning the kind of person he is and whether this is the life I truly want for myself. Just as I was about to drop my phone, a call came in, and it was Rose, my amazing Secretary. I picked up with anticipation, wondering what time-sensitive matter she needed to discuss. “Sorry to disturb you, ma'am,” Rose said in her usual professional tone. “The client has been waiting to get the file. Should I be expecting it now?” Just as I was about to drop my phone, a call came in, and it was Rose, my incredible Secretary. I picked up with anticipation, wondering what time-critical matter she needed to discuss. “Sorry to disturb you, ma'am,” Rose said in her polite and professional tone. “The client has been waiting to get the file. Should I be expecting it now?” “Yes, Rose, I will send it right away,” I assured her. I ended the call and made my way to my now opened room. Immediately I got inside, I sat down at my desk, my fingers dancing across the keyboard as I swiftly located the file and attached it to an email and I sent to it to her. As I exited my room, heading back towards my mom's room, a sound caught my attention. The distinct noise of the gate opening echoed through the house. Relief washed over me as I thought, “Finally, someone is back.” I said to myself as I walked through the hallway towards the room. Curiosity got the better of me, and I approached the window to take a peek. To my surprise, I saw four unfamiliar, sleek, black cars parked outside the building. They exuded an air of mystery, their presence both intriguing and unsettling. Questions swirled in my mind, wondering who they belonged to and what their purpose was. I became scared as the event of yesterday made realize nowhere was safe enough. Just as my thoughts began to consume me, my phone rang once again, jolting me back to reality. I answered it immediately. “Rose, I've sent you the file,” I said, my voice steady and composed. “Check your email and let me know once you have it.” “Will you come down to me? Or should I come to you?” The voice sent a shiver down my spine—it was Xavier on the line.
