Chapter 013

I couldn't believe my eyes as I stood there, in complete denial. With trembling hands, I slowly uncovered the counter, removing each layer of cloth. As I stepped back to take in the scene, I was at a loss for words and actions. “Should I reach out to Amy? Or maybe call my mom?” I wondered, but none of the options felt right. So I sat down on the cold, bare floor, trying to make sense of everything that had unfolded. And then it hit me. “So Xavier is involved with Cosmos, a notorious mafia boss? Why would he be? Could Xavier himself be a part of the mafia?” I whispered to myself, carefully piecing the memories together one by one. I stood up, and I quickly covered the counters and checked the mirror for any signs of people nearby. Seeing that the coast was clear, I dashed out of the room and into the corridor, making my way back to my room. As I approached the stairs, I noticed Ethan and the man he had assigned to watch over me running towards me. I knew I had to come up with a plausible explanation to avoid raising any suspicion. “We've been searching for you, ma'am,” Ethan said as soon as he reached me. “The network was terrible in my room, and I needed to send something to my secretary. Plus, I wanted to get some fresh air,” I replied, offering a slight smile. “You need to return to your room immediately,” he insisted firmly. “But I'm not finished here, Ethan, and besides…” “Right now, ma'am,” he interrupted, his tone urgent. Just as I was about to protest, a group of armed men came charging towards us. “They're closing in on us. We have to go now,” one of the men shouted from a distance. Suddenly, we began to hear loud and rapid gunshots from afar. Before I could think, one of the men lifted me up and ran towards a room. He opened the door and dropped me inside. “What's happening?” I asked with a shaky voice, but he didn't answer. Instead, he turned back and quickly walked towards the door, locking it behind him. The gunshots continued for a few minutes, accompanied by loud noises and the sound of people running around the mansion. At that moment, I realized that the room I was in was different from mine. “Whose room is this?” I wondered, trying to locate the light switch. I couldn't find it at first, but then I noticed a tiny reflection of sunlight in another part of the room. I walked towards it and shifted the curtains, allowing more light to come in. That's when I saw the light switch and pressed it down. The room lit up. “No way,” I exclaimed. It was Xavier's room. He had a big bed, and at the far end of the room, there was a shelf with different types of alcohol. There was no wardrobe, only a rack of clothes with plain tees and shorts. In the other corner, there was a table and a chair, with just a diary and a pen. The wall was covered with pictures of a musician. “Must be his favorite,” I thought. He had a giant artwork of a lion and a man across from his bed that captivated me. “I bet he's an art lover,” I thought as I walked towards another artwork beside it. I returned to sit on his bed, the sound of gunshots had ceased, but the footsteps persisted. I was starting to doze off when suddenly, a loud knock on the door startled me. At first, I didn't respond, but the knocking persisted. The person eventually left, and I could hear their fading footsteps. Minutes later, the person returned, and I heard the jingling of keys from outside the door. They inserted the key and unlocked the door. I quickly scurried to a corner of the room, and a man entered, his back turned to me. “Ma'am, are you there?” he asked loudly. It was Ethan. I cautiously moved away from the corner, confirming it was him. “Are you okay?” he asked, concern clear in his voice. I nodded in reply as I sat down. “Where is Xavier?” I asked him, my voice filled with urgency. He didn't answer immediately, but after a moment, he said, “I came to ensure your safety, ma'am. I'll leave now.” “No, I asked you a question! Where is your boss?” I almost shouted, frustration creeping into my voice. He stopped in his tracks and said, “He went on a business trip.” “Yes, you told me. Where is he?” I asked. “I really don't know much about the trip, but he will be back soon, I assure you, ma'am.” “Now that you've refused to tell me his whereabouts, what's happening in the mansion?” I inquired. “It's a slight issue that needs to be resolved,” he reassured. “I…” I was interrupted by a gunshot sound. “Is that your way of resolving things?” I questioned, looking at him. He quickly opened the door and ran out of the room. As I laid on the bed, I finally succumbed to calling Amy. As I dialed her number, my phone went off. I haven't charged it for about two days now. I went to check the drawer for a charger, but instead, I found packets of cigarettes and small bottles of alcohol. I searched inside it and still,I couldn't find the charger. I closed the drawer and noticed something looking like a charger on the shelf. “Finally,” I said as I grabbed the charger. Suddenly, a bag fell down from the shelf, and fear gripped me as I bent down to see what fell out.
