At the sound of the gunshot, panic spread through the air like wildfire. Everything scattered. Everyone had to look for an escape or hiding spot. Trembling in fear,I went behind him, and held him tight. The gunshots continued without stopping.
"Can you run?" Xavier shouted over the noise. I nodded immediately.
"Yes, but where are we running to?" I asked.
"I will cover you. Run towards that black car," he pointed to a sleek car parked opposite us. "My driver will take you home," he said.
"What? How sure are you that he will be there?" I asked fearfully.
"He is there. Go!" he said, gripping my hands.
"What about you?" I asked, concerned.
"Go! I will be fine," he shouted.
The gunshots filled the air as everyone kept running. He pulled me towards him and shielded me as I ran towards the car with all my strength.
As soon as I reached the car, I opened the door and got inside. Just as he said, the driver was waiting inside. The car sped of.
As the car sped away from the building , my thoughts were consumed by worry for my mom and Amy. My dad had left just an hour ago to catch a last-minute flight after signing the marriage certificate.
Fear took hold of me, and I shouted at the driver, "I want to go back!"
"Ma'am, it's too dangerous. I can't take you back," he replied, his voice calm but firm. He increased the speed of the car, determined to keep me safe.
“But my mom, Amy. I need to go back!" I said as tears streamed down my eyes.
The driver remained silent, his focus on the road ahead. Instead, he reached into a compartment in the car and handed me a phone.
I quickly took the phone from him and dialed my mum's number. However, she didn't respond, and my heart filled with fear. The thought of losing my mum made me sob. I then tried calling Amy, but she didn't answer either. I persisted and finally reached her on the third attempt.
“Amy, Amy, it's me, Aria. Are you safe?" I said, struggling to catch my breath.
“Thank goodness, Aria. Your mum has been crying uncontrollably since. Let me pass the phone to her," Amy said, with relief.
"My dear Aria," her voice came through the line, sounding both relieved and anxious.
"Mom, are you okay? Where are you?" I asked, my voice shaky with worry.
She took a quick but deep breath before speaking, her voice filled with fear.
"My dear, I'm grateful you're safe. We are safe too. I'm so sorry, baby girl. I never anticipated it would happen like this. I'm so sorry," she said, with a low voice.
"That's not what we should be focusing on right now. I'm heading home as quickly as I can. Please stay safe. I love you," I said, tears streaming down my face.
"I will, my love. I love you too," she said, and the call ended.
I looked at the phone screen and notice that it had turned off. "Perfect timing," I said as I set the phone down on the seat beside me. I closed my eyes and lean my head against the cool window, trying to relax and clear my mind.
As the driver continues to navigate through the streets, my thoughts wander, wondering who could have called and why it happened at this particular moment. Today, of all days, when everything already feels so overwhelming.
Suddenly, the car abruptly comes to a stop, jolting me out of my thoughts. My eyes snap open, filled with confusion.
"s**t!" the driver exclaims, his voice filled with frustration and urgency. He quickly steered the car, making a sharp turn onto another route.
My heart races, and fear begins to grip me tightly. "What's wrong?" I manage to ask, my voice trembling.
"How did they know we would pass through here?" he mutters, his tone filled with disbelief. He accelerates the car, trying to distance us from whatever danger may be lurking.
"Who are they?" I asked, my voice almost on the verge of tears, desperate for answers.
He remains silent, his focus solely on navigating us to safety, leaving me with a sense of unease and uncertainty.
He continued driving at a high speed, skillfully maneuvering through every corner. I trembled in fear as I reached for my phone to call Amy, only to find that the battery was dead, leaving me feeling even more helpless.
After what felt like an eternity, we finally reached the main road, and he parked the car. Breathing heavily, he turned to look at me and said, "They lost us.”
"Who are they? Why are they after us?" I asked, trembling.
"Well, you don't need to worry about that, ma'am. You are safe now," the driver said as he readjusted the seat and smile.
"What do you mean by 'I should not worry'? My life was in danger too. How can I not worry?" I exclaimed . Everything felt scary and overwhelming, and I couldn't help but feel frustrated by the ongoing events of the day.
"Calm down, ma'am," the driver said, his voice steady despite the chaos surrounding us. "I don't understand what's going on either. My job is to keep you safe."
As he attempted to start the car, a bullet suddenly tore through the window and shattered the glass, landing just inches away from me. The deafening sound of gunshots filled the air and without hesitation he swiftly accelerated, driving away as fast as possible.
“What will we do now?” I said as my breathing increased almost crying
But I didn't get any response.
I think they are after me, why? What did I do to them? I asked, sobbing.
He didn't answer me,but instead, he immediately started the car and drove away quickly from that place.
As we sped away, “You are safe with me ma’am,”I could hear the driver's low but steady voice, reassuring me that he will do everything possible to protect me.
