Chapter 012

1213 Words
The mansion has been less busy for a few days now, with only a few men remaining. “Maybe they decided to travel since their boss isn't around,” I thought as I walked around the corridor. I asked Ethan about Xavier two days ago, and he told me that he went on a business trip. When I reached the long chair across the corridor, I sat down with my headphones on, playing soft music. Normally, I would be on my honeymoon, but here I am, feeling lonely in a place where I don't know what to do. I couldn't call my friend Amy, as she just traveled to meet her fiancé, and I would rather not bother her with my complaints. As I stood up and walked back to my room, I overheard two ladies talking about something dangerous. I didn't pay much attention, thinking it didn't concern me. However, as I passed the door behind the corridor, I heard the word “Boss.” “Boss? Are they talking about Xavier?” I wondered, stopping in my tracks. I was already a few steps away, and I couldn't hear them clearly. I decided to go back and try to get an idea of what they were talking about or what might have happened. “He might lose his life in this trade, Cosmos is his strongest enemy,” one of them said. “He's always ready to fight alone, he even asked the men to stay behind,” the other lady added. “Really? How do you know? Oh, Kelvin? Are you still seeing him?” the first one asked loudly. “Shhh,” she said, trying to cover her mouth, “you're shouting.” I stood in the corner, feeling confused. “What trade are they talking about? Who is Cosmos? And why might Xavier lose his life?” I wondered. “Who is Cosmos?” I blurted out, catching the young ladies off guard. Sporting matching uniforms, it was clear they were mansion employees. “And who are you?” one of them shot back, scanning me from head to toe. “No need to answer a question with another question,” I retorted firmly. “Now spill it. Who is Cosmos?” I demanded, crossing my arms. “We have no clue who Cosmos is, so if you'll excuse us, miss,” the other one replied, edging towards the exit. “If anything happens to my husband, you'll be held accountable,” I warned, causing them to freeze in their tracks. They turned back, their gazes fixed on my hands, searching for the ring. And once they spotted it… “Cosmos is one of the toughest bosses in the South Mafia. A rumor has been spreading that he’s got some unfinished business with our boss,” one of them blurted out. “A Mafia boss? Why would he be tangled up with one?” I pondered. “And where is the business taking place?” I asked. “Oh, I wish I knew! They keep the locations under wraps. We only hear rumors,” the other lady replied. I would rather not appear clueless or like a stranger, so I decided to figure it out on my own. “He probably kept it from me to spare me worry,” I said, trying to sound composed. “You can go now,” I added, dismissing them. Hurrying to my room, I grabbed my phone and searched for “Cosmos” online, but found nothing. I would rather not jump to conclusions just yet. Sitting on the bed, confusion clouded my mind. “Well, I don't care,” I muttered, trying to shut out everything I had heard. As I closed my eyes, memories of our wedding day flooded my thoughts, causing me to bury my head in the sheets. Suddenly, a thought struck me, and I jolted up from the bed. “What if Cosmos was behind the shootings on our wedding day?” I wondered. My heart raced, and I shook my head at the terrifying idea of losing Xavier. Though our marriage was contractual, losing him to death was something I couldn't bear. “Calm down, Aria. That's not the issue here. You barely know him, aside from him being a businessman,” I reassured myself. Walking over to the table, I picked up my phone and tried calling my mom. It rang, but she didn't answer. I tried again and she finally picked. “Hello, Mom,” I said through the phone. “Hello, beautiful. I hope you're doing well?” she asked. “Yes, I am. I want to ask you a question, and I want you to answer me directly,” I said. “Is everything okay, Aria?” she asked. “Why did you marry me off to Xavier?” I said loudly. “I'm tired of you asking me this question over and over again,” she said sternly through the phone, almost shouting. “Mom!” I called out. “You're married to him now, make it work,” she said and ended the call. I stood up and walked towards the door, searching for Ethan. He's the only person who can give me the right answer right now. “Where is Ethan?” I asked the man standing opposite my door. “The other building, ma'am,” he answered. “Should I get him for you?” he asked. “Don't bother,” I said, and I walked towards the corridor. I noticed him watching me, so I stood there, trying to act like I was busy with my phone. As soon as I noticed he wasn't watching, I ran down the stairs to look for Ethan myself in the next building. As I descended the staircase, I spotted Ethan emerging from a room in the distance. I called out, “Ethan… Ethan,” but he couldn't hear me. Looking back, I saw the man I had dodged earlier at my door, peering down the corridor. From his worried expression, I could tell he was searching for me. Without hesitation, I sprinted in the direction Ethan had gone, and when I turned, I saw him approaching from behind. I was determined to talk to Ethan and nothing would stand in my way. However, he seemed to have vanished. But I couldn't risk getting caught now. The idea of finding a hiding place crossed my mind, and I noticed the door Ethan had come out of earlier, right across from me. I grabbed the doorknob and the door swung open. I quickly entered the dark room and shut the door behind me. From the window, I watched him pass by. Just as I was about to open the door and step outside, I stumbled over something. I immediately pulled out my phone and switched on the flashlight to search for a light switch. Luckily, I found it. As I turned on the light, I noticed I had tripped over a bag on the floor. Looking around the room, I noticed that everything was covered with clothes. Out of curiosity, I pulled back the cloth, and my mouth dropped open in disbelief and fear. “Oh my God,” I exclaimed.
