Chapter 1
The entire city buzzed with one topic- the marshal’s murder that sparked the war. Posters reading “wanted: Toren Ravenscar” hung on every corner, a constant reminder that he was the cause of the chaos. Wrapped in a dark cloak, Serena carefully made her way through the streets. “What a twist,” she thought. “My father is dead, and this guy’s the enemy’s face. How convenient.” In the tavern, she caught whispers : “Toren killed the marshal. That’s why the war started. But maybe the truth is more complicated?” Smiling, Serena thought, “If he’s guilty, I wonder how he’ll react when he finds out I’m his new problem.” Revenge was shaping up to be quite the spectacle-full of dangerous passions and unexpected alliances. “This from Elvenya?” Toren asked without looking up. “Not exactly, my lord. It’s ..a leak. A newspaper,” Hael said, handing over the parchment, creased and well-read. Toren unfolded it and read silently. Slowly. Too slowly for a man used to bad news. At the first paragraph, his lips twitched into a dry, sarcastic smirk. “Accused of murdering the marshal. Suspected of provoking war..’”he said aloud.”Wonderful. I haven’t even crossed their border, yet I’m guilty of all Elvenya’s troubles. Quite the achievement.” He tossed the paper on the desk and leaned back in his chair. “They need a face. An enemy. And who fits better than a Varkadian with a cold stare and army?” “What are your orders, my lord?” Toren closed his eyes for a moment. “For now, nothing. Let Elvenya stew in its own play. But you, Hael,” he said, locking his eyes with his squire, “find out who fed them my name.” He stood and paced slowly across the room. “If I’m the villain in their story, I want to meet the playwright.” Serena left at dawn-no goodbyes, no second glance. Just the valley mist and a heart burning with fury. Her father was dead. His killer still free. And the world seemed content to forget. But she wouldn’t. In her satchel-a plain dress, a dagger stitched into the hem, and forged papers under the name Ella Vale. Varkadia wouldn’t welcome a traitor’s daughter. But a servant girl ? Perhaps even into the royal palace. “You want war?” She whispered into the night. “Then meet the woman who lost everything.” She rode straight toward the heart of the enemy. To find the truth. And the man rumored to have given the order : Commander Toren Ravenskar. After two weeks, Serena finally stepped into the capital of Varkadia. The city was stone and smoke-guarded eyes, tight streets, and the scent of roasted meat clinging to the air. Strangers weren’t welcomed .. but they weren’t executed on sight. That, she considered a victory. Fate hadn’t been kind. But Serena was beautiful-and in places like this, beauty could be a curse..or a weapon. Nineteen. Long, wavy dark-brown hair. Deep brown eyes. Full lips. A straight, noble nose. A quiet voice that concealed fire. She was accepted into the palace fields-picking apples, washing roots, keeping her mouth shut. That suited her just fine. Until this morning. She was carrying a basket when he arrived. The horse was black as a raven’s wing. The rider - colder, sharper. Clad in leather, a sword at his side. He dismounted at the edge of the field. The workers fell silent. One girl dropped a watering can. Serena looked up - and her heart stumbled. Toren Ravenskar. Russet hair, eyes - a strange blend of green and hazel. Sharp, unreadable. Dangerous, like a storm held on a leash. “New one ?” His voice was rough and commanding. “You. With the apples don’t hide behind them I can see you.” Serena clenched the basket handles until her fingers went white, but managed a polite smile. “Yes my lord. My name is Ella. Ella Vale.” “Vale..” He stepped closer, eyes scanning her face. “Lovely name. Lovely face. But you’re clearly not from around here. A runaway noble? Or something more interesting?” She lowered her gaze. “I came looking for work, my lord.” “Mmm.Women with eyes like yours aren’t usually here to scrub carrots.” His gaze lingered just long enough to make her breath catch. Her palms were damp. Her pulse, dangerously loud. “Don’t be afraid, Vale, he said, with a slow smirk.”I don’t bite. Unless asked.” He turned, walking away-then paused, looked back, and added : “You’re eyes are memorable. And I don’t like remembering people.” Then he vanished. And Serena stood frozen, chest tight, fire rising beneath her ribs. So that’s him. Or at least .. the shadow of him. And now, he’s seen her face. Serena stood still. The basket in her hands was heavy, but she barely felt it. His eyes were gone -but the feeling of them lingered, like a shadow on her skin. “He spoke to you ?” Someone whispered beside her. She flinched. It was one of the girls-Elvy,with freckles and a wool scarf slipping from her hair. “He just asked my name,” Serena said quietly, pretending it meant nothing. But Elvy narrowed her eyes. “Mmm.. I’ve worked here a while. I’ve never heard him say more than ‘move’ to any of us.” Serena looked away. “Maybe he was just in a talkative mood.” “Maybe,” Elvy nodded slowly. “But he looked at you like he meant to remember every detail. And that’s not how he looks at anyone.” Serena didn’t reply. Something heavy settled in her chest. As if she’d just been..marked. “He’s curious about you,” Elvy added, voice low. “And men like that -when they’re curious? That rarely ends well.” Serena gave a small nod, eyes fixed on the dirt. He remembered her. And that.. was more terrifying than being ignored.
