Grace's POV
I was tired
Exhausted
I wasn't ready to fight, I had to rest and eat. But that stupid wolf is searching for me, I had no time. I couldn't postpone my journey, if my mate could find me, I was left with 0 possibility to accomplish this. He wouldn't let me. Even if this could kill me, I had only one opportunity.
Unlike John, I knew where to find him, I only had to follow home's scent. This was strange, but no wolf could ever really leave his house, you can't just forget where you have been for your whole life. Even if your home is not there anymore, house smells like father, like mother and like siblings, an unique scent.
Sadly I had no sisters or brothers, my father was the only one that could led me to him.
I always knew how to find him, I've waited long enough to become stronger. Now it feels like I was vulnerable, like I have never been trained. The hunt drained all my strenght, this could be a suicide mission, but it has to be done.
I've been running for hours in my wolf form, I had no clothes with me, since I couldn't afford to go back to my house and bring my backpack.
If I ever came back I had to face my mate, I had to face my responsibility. I promised John and I will keep it, but I was still unsure. I had to payback for all the things he has done for me, he raised me, he fed me, he educated me. I just couldn't let him down.
However my wolf brought me in front of a cave. Really strange, I never thought that he was hiding here.
As I stepped forward, a really disgusting and unmistakable smell hit me hard, blood. Something was really wrong here.
I sensed only one presence, but it was weak. It wasn't him for sure, Alpha always told me that he was really strong. Could this be a trap? Was he waiting for me ?
There's only one way to know it.
I entered.
The smell became stronger, but still he was not inside.
I looked around, ready to go away, probably he left this place before I came here. I had a feeling that I shouldn't leave but there was nothing here to hold me. As I made my way to the exit, I heard it.
A faint whisper, it came from a dark corner, from behind a rock. As I came closer towards that sound, I realised that it wasn't a rock, it was actually someone.
"Run away, he will come back soon"
It was a woman's prayer, I approached her.
OH GODDESS> my wolf whimpered
She was a mess, there was dirty and blood all over her body. I couldn't even distinguish her features. Were her eyes brown or blue? I really couldn't tell. All I could see was red and black
"Leave, please"
Then she passed out.I don't know why, but something was telling me to bring her away right now. He was coming back and I could face him, but she was a priority, I didn't know why but she came first. I didn't mind if I would never get again the change to kill him, all that really matters is to take her to my pack where she could be safe.
This she-wolf must have seen terrible days in this cold place.
--
The way back home was hell.
I was carring her on my back and this was knocking me down.
I had no food, no time to sleep. I was afraid that my father was on my track. Yes, now I was scared, scared that he might hurt her again. He will have to pass over my dead body first. Who she was I didn't know, but I had this strong feeling, maybe it was my task as a beta, care for the others. But surely it was something bigger, I never cared this much for anyone, I only cared for myself
Now that I was near my pack the weight became unsustainable, my steps were heavier and my breathing was irregular.
As the sun was setting down, I heard loud growls coming from the packhouse. I already had an idea about who was the cause.
I had to reach the battle ground before a war could start, I told John that wasn't my intention to start a war, and now I have to prove it.
With that woman still on my back, I headed towards the packhouse.
These few steps were agonizing, my wolf was begging me to shift back and let her rest, but she has to hold on, if we don't stop this, there will be a m******e and I didn't know which side I will choose. I would like to fight side by side with my Alpha, but my wolf was already on my mate's side. I couldn't afford to have another crack between my wolf and I.
Two howls dominated the silence, everything stopped.
Then I felt hundreds pair of eyes on me. They must sensed me.
I shifted exhausted, I couldn't hold back anymore. The woman was now laying down on the ground.
I looked at the two men who were in front of each other leading their pack.
John had pity eyes but yet they were peering something, he was as if shaken by surprise.
DID HE REALLY THINK THAT I WOULD NEVER COME BACK? WAS I REALLY THAT IRRESPONSIBLE?
I looked away from him. My eyes met my mate's gaze. At first he was relieved, but suddendly his gaze changed. He was angry now, disappointed. Not only I had to deal with a mate, but now it was a furious mate. Even being so irritated I couldn't deny that he was the most handsome man that I have ever met, even more than John.
I felt on my knees, naked, panting, my vision was clouding.
"Please stop"
Then everything went black.
As I was laying down on the ground I heard two different voices say the same thing
"Mine"
"Mine"
Then nothing at all
WAS I DEAD?
One thing I knew for sure: my pack, Wind Runners pack was safe.
