prologue
My name is Lex, I'm a 25 year old werewolf with no mate, most werewolves find their mate within the first year of their full transformation or shift. Which would be fine except that usually happens at the age of sixteen. My twin brother Alex found his mate on our seventeenth birthday.
Alex is the complete opposite of me, he is over six feet tall, he is very toned, he has sandy hair and the most beautiful hazel eyes. His wolf is larger than the other wolves but not as large as an alphas, and is brown. Whereas I am five seven in height, not as strong as the she wolves who have mates, I have black hair with a tint of royal blue, and my eyes are a deep blue. My wolf is black and also has a blue tint. Only she's as big as an alphas. When I shift I'm as big as my dad's, no one knows why.
Alex is the next Alpha of our pack so he trains intensively, his wife is the best sister you could ask for. I like to think my dad is an honorable man. Sometimes I’m relieved I don’t have a mate, my brother and I know the after math of losing a mate.
When our mom died it hurt everyone, but it almost killed our dad too. The only thing that kept him going was raising us. I don’t want to ever feel that kind of pain, I scares me if I’m being honest. As wonderful as it would be to feel the pull, the sparks, the amazing connection that comes with having a mate I’m not sure I’m really ever going to be ready for that kind of pain.
The Mate bond is stronger than nearly anything in the world, from what I hear it's intensifying before you mark your mate but afterwards it's this unbreakable bond. Well almost unbreakable, death is of course the only exception. Humans can only assume that they are ‘in love’, however shifters know and nearly instantly love their mate, our wolves make sure of it.
There are rare occasions when your wolf conceals the bond from the human side until they feel you are ready to accept your mate, but that normally only happens when you’ve been through too much trauma. You will need to learn to open your heart and trust before they put you in a situation where you might reject their mate. When we lose our mate it's unbearable, and even some die from a 'broken heart’ when they lose their mate.
Sometimes I'm glad not to have found mine, other times I question if I even have a mate out there, the only reason it took Alex so long to find his is because Amilia hadn't had her first full transformation she found Alex a week after she shifted . I feel like the mating call just skipped me, I'm never going to find my mate.
Some packs sell their unmated off for resources or alliances, that usually happens because their mate died, and always with both sides in complete agreement. We've never done that here though, my dad had an offer a few years ago to gain a wife that also lost her mate, but before he could give an answer the other pack was slaughtered by another pack.
King Kaden is the Alpha of the largest and strongest pack ever known. His name puts fear in the hearts of almost everyone, one thing I know to be true is I never want to meet him. Although I hear he is very good looking, I also hear he only sleeps with the human woman of his kingdom.
Maybe he doesn’t want children, because humans can’t bare a child to a shifter. The few that have gotten pregnant died, not only the women but the unborn children too.
Most kingdoms forbid mix breeding, it keeps both parties safe and it also helps protect our secret. About a hundred years ago they was a group called hunters, but a powerful She-wolf destroyed them all.
