Chapter 23••Mate

Alex POV

“For Dark Moon!” all the warriors shouted.

We started to move slowly and stealthily toward the abandoned asylum.

*Everyone who needs to shift, shift now those who are staying in human form get ready*

Cam sent a mind link to everyone here. I shifted along with Cam and half of the warriors. Mason stayed in his human form so that if we needed to communicate with anyone inside, he would be able to. Katrina had come with us. She was very nimble on her feet. If I didn’t know any better, I would say she was a wolf with the way she moves.

“Everyone ready?” Mason asked, looking around.

“Katrina, do you think you can help with the doors?”

“Easy,” she smirked.

She closed her eyes and lifted her arms in the air whilst chanting over and over.

“Aperta! Aperta! Aperta!”

The door blew off from the hinges and we started to file in. The air smelt of damp and something else, something I’d never smelled before. If evil had a scent, this would be it.

“Katrina, please wait outside,” Mason told her.

She nodded her head and walked back toward the door. Her shoulders seemed tense and her posture was tight, like she could feel the evil inside. The narrow corridors were pitch black. Thank goddess we had excellent vision in the dark.

*Split up Mason and Malcolm. You go left with your team me and Alex will go right with ours*

I turned right and entered a room full of people. A woman looked at us and let out an ear-piercing scream that made me cringe. People started to run into the room from a door on the left, screaming as they charged at us. The way they moved was like a shark in a frenzy. Scrėams and grunts started to fill the room. A fist swung past me. I felt the wind rushing through my fur. I turned to see the attacker was a man with no emotion on his face. His eyes looked lifeless.

Fück this it’s time to get rid of these dícks.

I leaped up and grabbed him by his throat. I shook my head, snapping his neck. Someone tackled me to the ground, I whipped around and caught his leg in my mouth and pulled, his blood sputtered out drenching me, I stood up and flipped him over with my muzzle and pushed my claw into his chest digging his black heart out. Cam was taking out four crazies at a time. A big guy was walking up behind him whilst he was ripping the head off another. I charged into him, sending him flying into the wall. Zeke, a warrior for the pack who stayed in human form, finished him off by snapping his neck.

Once the room was clear, we moved forward, following the stench of death and decay. Something made me stop in my tracks outside of a large door.

*Cam, we need to go in here.*

*After you then.*

I gave the door a push, but it was locked. I took a few steps back and ran forward, barrelling into the door, sending it flying open. I didn’t see anything inside the room apart from the most beautiful woman I’ve ever laid eyes on. She looked beaten, bruises forming on her perfect face. Her eye was swollen and a small cut on her cheek had let a few droplets of blood to drip down her face.

Mate! My wolf was screaming in my head. I looked at her and saw nothing but fear in her eyes. I saw movement in my peripheral vision. I turned and saw a woman walking towards my mate with a dagger in her hand. On the floor was the lifeless body of a girl. Her blood was spilling from her neck. You could still see the steam from it in the unnaturally cold room. I couldn’t help the snarl that escaped my throat.

I felt the others enter behind me.

*Alex fücking move!* Cam shouted into my head.

I leaped up and landed on the woman, she stunk of death. Her eyes had a bright red rim around the iris. Just as I was about to sink my teeth into her neck, a black claw grabbed onto her shoulder and she disappeared right in front of my eyes.

*What the fück just happened?* I asked everyone.

*Fück knows Leroy is hurt badly whatever that was. It was definitely not human.* Cam answered.

*She’s my mate Cam*

*Go see if she’s ok and let’s get the others*

I shifted back into my human form, not bothered by my nudity. All I cared about at this moment was her. She looked so frail and scared shítless. Her beautiful golden eyes held fear, fear of me.

*What's going on?*

*I don’t know should we bring her back with us*

Some of the guys were talking through the mind link, but I could hear everything they said.

“Mate!”

I couldn’t help it. I needed everyone to know who she was. She started to sway and her body wilted. Before she could hit the cold hard ground I caught her and held her in my arms.

My body came alive as sparks erupted all over my skin. I didn’t have time to think of that though. I had to get my mate some help. Her beautiful face was full of cuts and bruises, and her body was the same. She had grazes all down one side like she had been dragged along the floor and her stomach had a huge purple bruise covering it. She was half-naked and far too skinny, her bones stuck out through her skin. I looked around the room.

“Zeke, can I have your T-shirt please?”

“Of course gamma,”

He took his T-shirt off and passed it to me, carefully avoiding looking at my mate. I pulled the T-shirt over her head, gently picked her up, and carried her out.

When we got outside, Mason was waiting for us. Katrina was off in the distance with a small boy in her arms. I could hear her telling him he was safe and everything was going to be ok.

It must be the rogue's kid. Her head turned to me as I walked out, she squinted but then she looked back at the small boy, passing him a bottle of water.

“I need to get her home now. She needs a doctor.”

Cam shifted back and was handed a pair of shorts.

“Alex, go get your mate taken care of. Jason, can you help get Leroy back? He’s injured. Mason, can you stay here? We need to see if we can find all the other girls who were taken and organize getting everyone back home. Keep a team here and get the area cleared and see what else you can find.”

“Yes Alpha”

I heard Jason reply. I didn’t need to be told twice. I took off as fast as I could, being extremely careful not to jolt my mate and hurt her more.
