The Farewell in the Airport
There was the rattle of suitcases on conveyor belts and the vacuous intercom announcements of flight times being delayed. Amidst the frantic scurry of passengers off cold marble floors, Anna sat, passport in hand, while the other hand was clasped around her ticket.
the corners wrinkling slightly in her tight hold. Her heart pounded with a combination of urgency and raw despair.
She had gotten this far—barring it. Anthonio's persistent loan had covered the mere essentials, but the weight of their scrimping lay heavy on her bosom, a claustrophobic reminder of what flourishes from behind. Outside, the skies were a solemn painting of rolled-in grey, clouds cumulating richly, as if even the skies mourned the impending loss that loomed before her.
Suddenly, the loudspeaker sprang to life, cutting through the raucous hum of voices.
"Attention, passengers: Flight 879 to San Francisco has been delayed due to additional document verification. We ask you to stand by for an additional announcement."
Anna's breath was constricted in her throat. Her gaze travelled up to the illuminated screen, shock streaming through her as she listened to the words. Delayed? For 24 hours? Eternity stretched out before her.
Defeated, she collapsed back in her chair, fatigue sweeping over her like a wave. This was to be it; she had said goodbye and had gone through the weeping of her loved ones with pride, all the while hope of a new beginning glittering on the horizon. But fate had other plans for her. It had appeared to have cut out one final hour of her homeland, a sweet-bitter interval she could not decipher—cruel or benevolent?
A voice cut through the terminal's background din at that moment. "Anna!"
She turned around, and there he was—Anthonio, panting and disheveled. His hair was whipped back and forth by the wind, and his clothes stuck damply to him, bearing witness to the light shower that had begun outside. As if he'd stepped out of a tempest to catch a glimpse of her. In a flash, Anna sprang up from her feet, her body outpacing her brain's ability to keep up.
They collided into a hug, arms around one another in a firm hold, filling the spaces like pieces of a puzzle ready to be fitted together.
“I thought you’d already left,” he said, his voice quaking with emotion.
"I was going to," Anna gasped, her heart pounding and swelling at the same time. "But… there was a delay."
A trembling smile wrinkled his face, but his eyes glimmered with pent-up tears.
They collided in an embrace, their arms wrapping tightly around each other, fitting together like two puzzle pieces that had been waiting to be reunited.
“I thought you’d already left,” he said, his voice quaking with emotion.
“I was about to,” Anna whispered, her heart swelling and aching at once. “But… there was a delay.”
A trembling smile creased his face, but his eyes shone with unshed tears. "Maybe God was wanting us to have a minute longer," he whispered, the weight of their unspoken understanding hanging suspended between them.
They found a quiet nook among the throngs of travelers, the din of announcements and rumbling suitcases dwindling into the distance as they sat down to a deep conversation.
Each word was flavored with unspoken feelings as they retraced memories, exchanged hopes in hushed tones, and stood guard against the uncertainties of the future. With each laugh that they shared, with each tear, they grew closer, each able to reach a point of closure and ignite a smoldering ember of hope for the future.
As Anna was just leaving for the USA, a place that had promise but also uncertainty, she pledged to Anthonio genuinely. "I'll never forget you," she vowed. "I will send my first paycheck to assist you with paying for the loan, and I will do my best to get you to the USA. We can get married and finally be together."
Anthonio, with unshakable love in his eyes, replied, "Never forget that I love you. I will wait patiently for you to come back or until a time when I am able to meet up with you here in the USA. Whatever it may be, my heart belongs to you." Their love was unshakable, with hopes of having a future that both envisioned.
Anna gazed deep into his eyes, her tone firm and unwavering as she spoke, I vow to love you to the end of time. No distance span will ever come in between us; our love is a bond that transcends all obstacles. Although wealth at times may be achieved as an obstacle, it can never dilute the gravity of what we have.
I truly believe that fate will eventually guide our paths toward each other. I know that one day, we shall be together and continue to live our lives as a couple, because only you have my heart forever.
The moment had finally arrived for her to take a step toward the unknown, the threshold of a new adventure. At the crowded boarding area, she paused to glance back, her heart pounding.
There stood Anthonio, his gaze locked on her with a concentration that was almost palpable. His eyes wouldn't blink, as if he was afraid any momentary lapse would shatter the connection that they had in that fleeting moment of time.
With a warm smile, Anna lifted her hand and blew him a kiss, a gesture laden with unspoken promises and cherished memories. "Remember all we’ve shared," she called out, her voice carrying over the murmurs of the crowd. "Please hold on to it tightly; cherish every moment.” As she spoke, a wave of affection washed over her, and she added softly, “I have your picture in my heart."
With that, she walked away from her new beginning, leaving behind a piece of herself, stitched into the cloth they had stitched together.
As Anna steps onto the airplane, the cold metal of the plane contrasts with the warmth of her skin, making her shiver. She takes the window seat, her heart pounding as she gazes out at the vast tarmac before her.
The clouds linger heavy and grey overhead, a mirror to the struggle between will and fear raging in her. On his roof above his barbershop, Anthinio himself stands with his arms folded, his bright eyes fixed on the horizon.
The hues of sunset play on the horizon behind him, but his thoughts are filled with the storm coming on, both its thunder growing in the distance and its restlessness in his mind.
Anna had left her hometown in Colombia seeking greater opportunities and a brighter future. Anthonio Rodriguez, her devoted boyfriend, was the epitome of devotion and compassion towards their relationship.
In a show of rare love and devotion, Anthonio combined all his finances into one kitty to finance Anna's dreams and aspirations, determined to empower her to understand the prospects awaiting her.
