Chapter1
The Letter From Embassy I would give everything I have to help. Her situation was bittersweet, and her heart knew what sacrifices and responsibilities she carried even within her joy. She was instantly overcome with deep sadness as joy-filled tears clouded her vision, which was strange and distressing to onlookers. Warmth filled Anna’s heart. Overwhelmed and wondering what was the matter with her, her boyfriend was in the picture as soon as he noticed his girlfriend's distress. Anthonio Rodriguez was the name of her attentive boyfriend who cared for her immensely. Bringing a thoughtful look to his face, he asked, "What is the matter? How can I help you?" She was left feeling as if she were caught in a whirlwind of emotions soaked with exhaustion. The turmoil was relentless, and the responses were difficult. Rushing into a frenzied cyclone of thoughts, drowning in dreadful ones one after another, Anna's exhaustion was palpable. Stepping a bit closer, murmuring to her, hoping that she could relax, Anthonio said, “Please talk to me; I would do anything for you.” For a moment they misplaced reality. His words were meant to be comforting, but with too much pain — sadness blanketing any warmth they infused. Both concern and unwavering affection carved deep lines into his eyes as he scanned the crux of her tortured expression while intertwining his hands with hers in gentle prayer to share, to unclench, and unbar the ellipses that dismantled her soul. After all this time, Anna managed to open up to Anthonio during her moments of tranquility to share the bittersweet story related to the news of her visa. Unfortunately, while she was narrating all the difficulties she faced, Anthonio lost his composure. “Please stop crying,” said Anna with a soft tone, choosing “levity” as her “weapon” to lighten the mood. “You're supposed to console me, not the other way around. Remember that you're a man, okay? Try not to be too emotional.” Anthonio, plummeting into the depths of grief from the sacrifices he made, will still cry. He had spent all his savings from months of hard work as a barber to help Anna's mother with her health treatment. Anna entered her room, her heart heavy with the weight of her decision. She methodically gathered all her electronics, including her beloved television and various gadgets, placing them carefully for sale in a hastily organized line. The thought of parting with these items was difficult; Anna looked at a childhood photo before selling her belongings, but circumstances had pushed her to this point. As she began her task, Anthonio happened to walk by and noticed her distress. His resolve prompted him to act quickly, opening a loan with significant funds at a local loan shop to prevent her from selling her prized belongings. Dropping the cash-filled purse signified his undeniable devotion to her health and well-being; it was more than what Anna had expected. Even a thick leather purse shining under dim lights would appease one’s eyes, but it now stood for something more profound. Relieved and grateful, she took the purse, feeling a burden of sorts from its significance. Feeling cold and warm tears rusting on her lips in appreciation started pouring; her shoulders being pulled beneath the fabric made Anthonio comfortable for the moment, capturing both his warmth and sending her into a consoling trembling grasp around him. Anna Valencia (23) is a woman with a tall and lean physique who was born in Sabaneta, considered the smallest municipality in the metropolitan area of Medellín in Colombia. Living in a place that is simultaneously beautiful yet harsh, Anna has always dreamed of the possibility of traveling outside her country for the sheer purpose of discovering new lands and finding life changes that would drastically improve her family's economic condition. Pleading for help in vain, she recently returned home after spending all of her life’s savings in the hospital trying to get the proper treatment for her mother. This has taken a mental toll on Anna over the course of a week and has given her severe concerns. The life-changing thing she had all along been waiting for finally revealed itself when the US embassy answered her long-awaited visa application, almost feeling ethereal. A stream of mixed relief and happiness washed over her as tears began to flow from her eyes. She had turned out to be positive for the disease that had troubled her for years. All the hopes and sleepless nights filled with paperwork anxiously waiting to hear back had finally borne fruit, and she simply could not contain the bolt of joy zapping through her body. However, this crucial turning point in her life seemed like a curse the way her zestful enthusiasm came crashing down. Those well-earned, notoriously hard-working summers turned out to be in vain, as all the money saved up had to cover an emergency in the family. Her mother’s crucial medicine had drained all the funds set aside for the flight. It was only when Anthonio stepped in to take out a loan to support her that the glimmer of hope returned, reminding her of the kindness that still existed in the world. Anna reassured her mother and siblings that every month, she would send financial support to ensure they could take excellent care of their mother. Alongside this, she undertook the obligation of covering her siblings’ tuition costs, allowing them to further their education, just like in the past when she had supported them monetarily. She pledged to care for them in terms of well-being and claimable health supports despite claiming that challenges will be presented due to her maintaining this support until further notice. Anna’s promise shows how much love she has for her family, which bore witness to her role as a dependable family support. Taking a deep breath, she faced the young boy, her voice bittersweet. “You are the man of this house now that Daddy’s no longer here. You are the last male figure we can turn to. So listen to me as I get ready for my trip: you’re required to step it up, Mark, and take your responsibilities seriously.” I suggest stopping gambling altogether, as it will lead the family down a slippery path of ruin. Mother and your little sister need you now more than ever. And if these changes cannot be made, I will not be able to justify sending money home.” Consider how your actions affect us. Each sob exuded profound sorrow as tears cascaded down their cheeks. The mother’s lips quivered in a hopeless attempt to regain her shattered composure, but overwhelming grief had suffocated her. Every attempt at speaking was greeted with an insurmountable tidal wave of sadness that silenced her while rendering her words completely inaudible, attempting to provide her with her desired solace or clarity. Even when she tried to articulate something, her emotions drowned her, and her mouth became voiceless.
