Chapter4

A SILENT HOUSE Anna soon realizes the stifling silence that pervades Sarah's house as she assumes her new role. The walls, once alive with cheerful photographs and colorful paintings, now seem to echo with deep sadness and silence. Every room whispers tales of a previously prosperous life, quieted now by the darkness of loss and doubt. Still, behind the emotional barriers constructed around her, Anna holds fast to her determination to infuse warmth into Sarah's life, trusting her niceness and devotion can bridge the chasm of loneliness that has taken up residence on their shared grounds. Larry Jackson, the well-known billionaire and the mastermind of Pinnacle, a high-flying multinational technology firm, has made an indelible impact on the world of technology. At 70, he oozes poise and success, usually in impeccably styled white dresses that mark his stature and delicate taste. His stature is also enhanced by the entourage that supports him, a group of advisors and peers who are by his side, making him stand out in the industry. With all that wealth and success, Larry remains a dedicated father to his sole child, working hard to preserve their relationship in spite of the challenges of his celebrity career. Michael, his handsome and tall son, also in his early thirties, has an air of success surrounding him. Recently divorced and somewhat standoffish, he deals with life in a detached coolness. Michael hardly registers Anna, viewing her as part of his mom's care routine. But with weeks becoming days, Anna begins to inject life into the house. She fills the kitchen with the fragrance of her Colombian heritage—arepas, sancocho, and freshly baked empanadas—preparing dishes that bring memories back home. She's contagious in her vitality; she surrounds the living room with cheerful music, causing Sarah to rock in her chair and even eliciting a chuckle from her lips for the first time in months. Anna worked closely with Sarah, encouraging her gently to take tentative steps—physical and emotional—towards her recovery. Michael had only narrowly escaped the disruption of a divorce, barely a month into what had initially promised so much as a new adventure for him. The emotional shock of the breakup was still raw, rendering him lost and bereft of his sense of self. Amidst all of this chaos, he wrongly vented his frustrations at Anna, the dedicated carer who tended to his mother with a level of compassion and patience that he so readily took for granted. Instead of demonstrating the appreciation he knew he should have for her dedication, Michael consistently lashed out, letting his displeasure and frustration cloud his judgment. His talk to Anna was punctuated by fits of irritation and aggravation, as he snapped at her over the smallest things, speaking to her as an obstacle and not a human being. He did not even realize that Anna was not just a little baby carer but a silent observer of his agony, doing her best every day to introduce calm and stability into a time when so much of his own life felt so uncontrolled and unsure. He barely spoke to Anna, giving her side glances and issuing clipped, harsh orders that cut the air. "Where is her medicine?" he snapped, his tone tight and strained. "Keep the TV volume down," he said, his tone cold. "She doesn't like strong smells—no cooking," he ordered, as if these modest requests were the words of magic to loosen the room. Anna remained silent, tamping down the impulse to respond or strike back, her pride lodged in her throat like a foul lump. She saw pain in his face; he was torn, and she recognized that the gruffness of his voice was not cruelty but a reflection of his fear—a psychological barrier made of culpability or crushing bereavement. Under the veil of authority, his disdain passed beyond a façade and cast a chilling reminder of how far they stood apart in this fragile moment. One afternoon, after yet another blazing row, Anna approached him hesitantly, her brow creased with worry. "Sir," she started, her voice gentle but firm, "has something I have done displeased you? Since I began looking after your mother, I feel as though I have done something to offend you." I genuinely want to help, but I’m struggling to understand what’s causing this tension between us." Her heartfelt words lingered in the air, a desperate plea for understanding amidst Michael’s inner turmoil. He looked at her disdainfully, his countenance a mix of disdain and incredulity. His thoughts reeled with judgement as he thought, "Who is this servant carer to have the audacity to speak to him?" The mere thought of her audacity to go near him was preposterous, and he shoved her away with an air of superiority. Anna just could not help herself with the urge to dig deeper; the weight of her curiosity pushed her to call the other housemates to see if they knew anything about Michael's recent life. With her past experience at home, she had wanted to acquire information that would allow her to make sense of Michael's behavior. With a painfully sensitive realization of how easily her own motives could be misinterpreted, she approached her dealings cautiously, taking careful steps to preserve the purity of her intentions. Nevertheless, her resolve to understand more about Michael's actions drove her to contact others around her in the hope of creating a better understanding of what was going on. Anna stabilized herself and leaned a little closer, her gaze centering on him with a blend of determination and worry. "Sir," she started, speaking firmly but moderated by emotion, "I really need to understand where you are. Do you have real racist feelings, or is it a matter of disliking certain people without real reason? If I've unconsciously said or done something that's hurt you, I beg to know. I truly desire to correct it and apologize sincerely to you. Anna's choice of continuing to converse with Michael, with all its risk factors, has the power to significantly affect her career trajectory as a professional. As she grapples with internalizing the complex dynamics of their interaction, she realizes that the stakes are high. The tension between the call of a valuable relationship and the requirements of her profession represents a suffocating uncertainty. Will she risk her profession to nourish this love, or will she choose to place career progression over human connections? Stay tuned for the next installment, where the melodrama that ensues will define the real stakes and the lasting consequences of her decisions.
