I
ARIELLA’S POV
“No…” I muttered as pain coursed through my body. I desperately crawled to Roman, trying to hold him one last time. His body lay on the floor immobile, as I saw him struggle to draw his breath.
“Aww, isn't this cute?” Eve mocked as she watched me pull my battered body to go to him. “It took you all this time to know that he loves you? Sheesh, you must be daft…”
Eve was right; it took me this long to see how much he loved me, blinded by the facade Noah was showing me.
I dragged myself across the floor, reaching Roman. Mustering the last of my strength, I pulled up and rested his head on my thigh.
“Roman, please keep breathing…I know someone is looking for us,” I was lost in my own delusion, trying to comfort myself with the thought that someone was coming to save us.
He coughed. I could feel his body wincing from pain as he opened his eyes.
“Fire…bird, dont cry…tears dont match your beautiful face.” he managed to force the words out of his mouth.
“Please, dont go…dont die yet hang in there…” I cried, holding him. I could feel his body giving its all to keep him awake.
“The only regret I have is not telling you how much…” he coughed, blood spat out of his mouth as he fought to finish his sentence. “How much…I loved…you.”
Suddenly, he stopped moving. I looked down to see his emerald eyes that always blinked furiously at me still. And on his face was a smile, it wasnt like the taunting smile he would give me. This felt warm.
“No…Roman…Please, Roman, come back…” I cried as I held his dead body, praying from my soul that he would be okay.
“Doesn't work that way, sweetie.” Eve sneered, her voice oozing with contempt as she walked down to the other side of the room. “But worry not, you will be with him soon enough.”
My pain mingling with confusion as I looked at her, I had made sure she would get everything she wanted. There wasnt a thing I would do for her. But then…
“Why?” I asked as my tears rolled down my cheeks, and I was still holding Roman. “Why would you do all this?”
Eve turned to look at me, the amount of irritation I saw in her eyes was enough to start a war.
“Are you really that stupid?” she spat, as she turned walking towards me.
“Please tell me why maybe we…” My voice cracked as I was trying to tell her what I had in mind. “...we can still work things out, please tell me what I have done.”
Eve grabbed me by the cheek, looking me in the eye with rage. It was clear, and I didnt want to accept it.
“There is no we, it has always and will always be me!” Her voice was laced with every bit of hate mankind could muster. “My life was going well, I was in line to inherit the wealth, MY PARENTS kept for me…then suddenly news of the daughter they lost twenty years ago began circling, and they did everything to make sure that they would bring you back!”
She pushed me away, and my head collided with the wall. The pain I felt from that hit was nothing compared to the heartache I felt.
Yes, our parents had lost me, but for the first seventeen years of my life, I worked myself up to the highest brands; no one could avoid me, and it was going exactly how I imagined.
Then the day they saw me on national television, it was the day I found out that I was related to the mighty Specter family. They took me in, and I found out I had a sister who was just three years older than me.
Eve…she was my everything, I would have done anything to make her happy.
“Yesss, the princess of the Specter family has come home…with her long white hair like snow and her eyes as blue as the sea. Oh, Eve, why aren't you like Areilla? Oh, Eve, why dont you act like Areilla…”
Eve continued, looking at the ceiling as she pulled her long brown hair, stomping her feet on the floor like a child throwing a tantrum.
“Areilla this, Areilla that…gosh, I grew a special resentment for your name…then you begin to act like a saint…giving me the credit for almost all the new ideas…I didnt want that, I wanted to take my life back!”
She turned to look at me, her gaze was clearly filled with a mix of contempt and hate.
“Like stealing my life wasnt enough, you managed to bewitch the man I loved…Roman didnt even cast a gaze where I stood. It breaks my heart to see him die like this, but…if I can't have him, then you can't either.”
“I never loved him, it was No-”
“Noah? Of course, you fell for him, that was our plan from the start…” Eve’s word cut an even deeper wound on my heart; there wasnt anything that would have prepared me for it.
How?
Noah was there when I felt down or sad to console me; his love was pure and beyond anything. He even did things that I dreamed of; there has to be something.
Eve clapped her hands, and the Masked man who had pulled me into this cabin by my hair came in. He was also the one who riddled Roman’s body with bullets when he tried to fight back.
He slowly took off the mask, and my mind went into a spiral. I was looking at the man whom I called my everything; he was the one who dragged me here.
“Surprised are we?” Noah asked with a grim smirk. I watched as his hand went to Eve’s waist as he pulled her close, both of them began sharing an intimate kiss, making sure I would watch everything.
I had dedicated my life to making sure that he got everything he needed, and the only thing I would get was this…
“If you never loved, explain to me why you would even save me from that burning building…” I was looking at them, watching as Eve ran her hands through his hair.
“Well, I was never the one who saved you…But I was the one who started the fire, it was the dead boy toy on your lap that ran in to save you…I swooped in to act like the saviour, knowing that it would make you fall even harder…” Noah had this smile on his face.
I slowly looked down at Roman, and my tears started again. So it was him all along. How could one love you much and still hide it?
“I can't count how many plans both he and Bree ruined; they managed to thwart all our plans, making sure that we wouldn't get anything out…I mean, that was before I made it look like Bree was trying to sabotage your company, and you fired her. Telling her that you never want to see her again, which we made sure of…”
Eve smiled.
My heart sank. Bree, my best friend and my assistant, I found images of her with the competitor, and I thought she was colluding to take my company. So it was all a lie; here I thought I had lost her.
“What did you do to Bree? Dont even think of hurting her!” I had gotten a burst of strength trying to make sure that I get them to stay away from her.
“Oh no, honey. You are about to meet her; she has been waiting for you. It's been months now…” Eve had that nasty smile on her face.
“You…killed...Bree?” I asked.
Eve nodded slowly, behaving like a psychotic preschooler. “Oh, you should have seen how she squealed when I used a hot eye to take her eyes out…she then died telling me not to hurt you…such a bold spirit.”
I sat there in tears, my head couldn't fathom what was going on, learning that she had died that gruesome way stole the strength from me.
Roman…Bree, I had one by my side all these years, then out of rage and manipulation, I pushed her to her death. Then the other carried an unrequited love for me all these years, and I failed to reciprocate; I even resented him.
Now he lies cold on my thigh, there isn't going to be any hope for me to even get things back in order.
“Come on, honey, we'd better head back now…the search is about to begin…” Noah said as he walked out of the room, Eve stood there looking at me.
“I will be with you…” Eve said as she still had her gaze on me, she bent down to look me directly in the eye. “Maybe if you had come later in life, or never showed up…you wouldn't have to die here like this.”
She stood up and walked out of the building. About to leave, she pulled a revolver and fired two shots at both my legs, trying to make sure I wasnt going to make a run for it.
My brain couldn't process the pain, I could only muffle screams as I lay my head back on the wall.
I slowly looked down at Roman’s lifeless body, and my heart was heavier than before. I kissed him on the forehead…
“Maybe in another life, I will make sure to love you properly…and I will not…”
A strong smell blocked my nose, propane…they were going to blow us up.
I held Roman and closed my eyes, then I felt it. A strong heat engulfed me, and everything went dark…
And then—
