Chapter 1: The First Knock of Terror
It was exactly 2:30 AM. The silence in this upscale Delhi neighborhood was deafening. On this freezing winter night, the air was so cold that the window glass was frosted from the inside. Sitting beneath the dim yellow light of her room, Kavya’s fingers were flying across her laptop keyboard. The dark circles under her eyes clearly showed that she had been awake for hours. Some college project files were open on the screen, but her mind was stuck somewhere else entirely. The phone lying on the desk suddenly buzzed. Seeing the name glowing on the screen made Kavya’s heart skip a beat for a second—'Dad'. A phone call from her father at 2:30 in the morning? Something was terribly wrong. Kavya answered the call immediately. The voice coming from the other end of the line made the ground slip out from under her feet. It was a crying, shaking, broken voice—not her father’s, but the sobs of a man drowning in deep shock. "Kavya... daughter... we are ruined," the voice echoed through the phone. "Dad? What happened? Why are you crying? Is everything okay?" Kavya’s own voice trembled. The pen slipped from her hand and clattered onto the floor. "The company... the project where I invested my life savings has crashed. By tomorrow morning, if we don't pay fifty lakh rupees to the bank and our creditors, then... either our bodies will be found, or we won't ever be able to show our faces in this city again. Everything is over, Kavya... everything." The call disconnected. Beep-beep-beep... Kavya’s phone slipped from her numb hands and landed on the quilt. Her ears felt completely dead. Fifty lakh rupees? For a middle-class family where even fifty thousand was a huge amount, how had they overnight become debtors of fifty lakhs? Her father, who had always been the rock of the family, was sobbing on the phone like a child. The walls of the room felt like they were closing in on Kavya. The air grew heavy, and it became hard to breathe. Without thinking, still wearing her pajamas, she rushed out of her room. The living room was dead silent. Her mother was sitting in a corner like a statue, her eyes swollen from crying, with a strange, empty look on her face. Her father was sitting on the sofa with his head bowed down, as if twenty more years of age had been added to him in a single night. "Dad..." Kavya ran to him and took his cold hands in hers. "Dad, we will handle this. I'll do something... there has to be a way..." Her father raised his tired, red eyes and stroked Kavya’s head. There was nothing in his eyes except utter helplessness. "There is no way left, child. The man who brought us to this state is the only one who can pull us out of this swamp. But... but the price is very high." "Who is he? What is the price? Can it be higher than my life?" There was stubbornness in Kavya’s voice—that fierce attitude that wakes up when trouble hits the people you love. With a heavy heart, her father took a name—"Agin Rathore." As soon as that name was spoken, the temperature in the room dropped even further. There was a weight to that name, a terror known to every single child in the city. Agin Rathore—a name that echoed from the corporate world to the dark corridors of the underworld. A man who didn’t live by law books, but by rules of his own making. A man whose cold glance was said to be enough to make anyone’s soul tremble. "He has... he has put forth a condition," her father said, avoiding her gaze. "Forget fifty lakhs, he is ready to clear all our debts. He is ready to save our company from sinking. But in return... in return, he wants only one thing." Kavya’s heart hammered against her ribs. "What?" "You." For a moment, a deathly silence filled the room. Even the ticking of the clock seemed to stop. Kavya felt as though she must have misheard. "What did you say?" Kavya tried to let out a laugh, but it got stuck in her throat. "Marriage? Me? To a man we have never even seen face-to-face?" "Yes," her mother broke her silence, weeping. "His men are coming with the documents tomorrow morning. If you refuse, the police or those people will drag your father away. We have no other choice, Kavya. Either the honor of this house will be auctioned off, or else..." Her mother couldn't finish the sentence. Kavya looked at her mother, then at her father’s slumped shoulders. The ground had vanished from beneath her feet. All her dreams, her college, her freedom—everything was about to be sacrificed in one strike for a piece of paper on which her life had been bartered away. The morning sun lit up the city, but the darkness inside the Sharma household only deepened. At exactly nine o'clock, there was a heavy knock on the door. The knock was so loud and solid that the main door of the house shook. Kavya peeked out from her bedroom window. Two large, black luxury cars were parked down in the street. Around them stood men in black suits with emotionless faces, radiating a strict and dangerous watchfulness. The door was opened. The sound of heavy boots echoed through the living room, signaling an approaching storm. The man who walked in was none other than Agin's chief assistant and manager—Vikram. He carried a leather bag and some documents in his hand. There was a chilling formality etched on his face. "Mr. Sharma," Vikram said in his heavy, measured voice, "time is up. We need an answer to the proposal Mr. Agin made." Her father looked toward Kavya. She was standing near the stairs, wearing a simple white suit. Her face was pale, but her tears had dried up. In their place was a mix of silent rebellion and utter helplessness. Kavya slowly began to descend the stairs. Every single step felt like she was walking toward a death trap. She looked at the papers in Vikram’s hand—the documents that would carry the signature of her entire life. "I am ready," Kavya’s voice echoed in the silent room. There was a strange, trembling depth to her voice. "But... I have one condition." Vikram raised his eyes and looked at Kavya. There was a hint of surprise in his gaze. "A condition? You are not here to negotiate, Miss Sharma. We don't accept conditions on the boss's decisions." "My condition is that my family must be completely freed from this debt, and in the future, there should never be any interference in their work or safety," Kavya’s voice had a strange strength, even though her hands shook inside. "And... I want to meet Agin Rathore today, right now. I want to see the man in whose name my life has been traded." Vikram stayed silent for a few seconds. He scanned Kavya’s facial expressions, as if checking how broken the girl really was. Then, a slight smile touched his lips—a smile that was nothing short of a warning. "Very well," Vikram said, pulling a pen from his bag and holding it out. "Sign the documents. The car is ready outside. Mr. Agin is waiting for you at his farmhouse to meet you himself." When Kavya’s hand reached out to take the pen, her fingers trembled slightly. She looked back once at her parents. In their eyes, alongside relief, lay an ocean of heavy guilt. Without wasting another second, she signed her name on those papers. Kavya Sharma. Those weren't just signatures; they were the funeral procession of her own freedom. Ten minutes later, Kavya was sitting in the back of one of those black cars. The vehicle picked up speed, moving away from the crowded city toward a deserted, densely wooded area. As the car drove further past the city limits, the streetlights grew sparse, and a thick silence took over. Kavya looked out the window. The sky was covered with clouds, and the wind was shifting. Her heart rate kept climbing. She had no idea what lay ahead, what kind of man was waiting for her, or what the ending of this new life would be. Miles away from the city, the car stopped in front of heavy iron gates surrounding a massive, fortress-like farmhouse in a desolate area. The guards on patrol nodded and cleared the way. The view inside was terrifying. Shadows of giant trees all around, an old, grand, and mysterious mansion sitting in the middle, and a heavy, unsettling atmosphere hanging in the air. The car stopped. Vikram stepped out and opened the back door. "Let's go, Miss Sharma—or should I say, the soon-to-be Mrs. Rathore." There was a strange mockery in Vikram’s tone. Kavya took a deep breath, clenched her fingers together, and stepped toward the heavy doors. She didn't know that beyond those doors, the human world ended and a world began where strength and terror were the only laws. The large wooden doors of the mansion swung open on their own. The indoor temperature was significantly lower than outside. A sudden gust of cold wind hit Kavya directly in the face, making goosebumps erupt all over her skin. In the middle of the vast hall, a figure stood with his back to her. He wore a black jacket and had broad shoulders. His sheer presence made the air in the entire room feel heavy. "She has arrived, sir," Vikram said, bowing slightly from behind. The man slowly began to turn around. Kavya’s breath caught in her throat. She narrowed her eyes slightly, trying to make out the face of the man whose mere name made the toughest fighters in the city sweat. Agin Rathore. When the man completely turned and looked at Kavya, her soul froze. His eyes—they weren't just brown or black; they held a strange gleam that didn't belong to humans. His face had sharp, chiseled lines like carved stone, and his lips wore a dangerous silence that was scarier than death itself. Without saying a single word, Agin locked his cold, piercing gaze directly on Kavya’s face. That single look sent an electric shock through her body. A shiver ran down her spine, and her throat went completely dry. Agin took slow, deliberate steps and walked right up to her. The air temperature seemed to drop below freezing. As he came close, a strange scent of earth and wild forest hit her—something that never came off an ordinary human. Agin leaned down close to Kavya’s ear and whispered in a voice that was heavy, melodic, yet terrifying— "Welcome, Kavya... now forget the way out of this cage." Kavya’s heart stopped for a second. She understood that the fire she had stepped into would burn her to ashes.
