Chapter 8

Thorin sighed and ran his hand through his hair, “As dangerous as being a Luna, I suppose. A Luna is the Alpha’s equal and just as responsible for the pack. She is his weakness and his strength.” Felita thought about rogue attacks and the alpha’s being challenged and agreed. “Tell me about your kingdom,” she whispered. Thorin talked about his home and family with pride. He clearly loved them. He started to say something else, but caught himself and changed the subject. It made the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. "He is hiding something," she told her wolf. "Yes, I think you are right, but give him time. You just met. Maybe he will tell you later. You’re not telling him everything either." Felita agreed, "True, but I don’t have any skeletons in my closet." She left the conversation at that and gave him her attention as he talked about dragon customs and his subjects. She could tell he loved his people and that being the next king was important. They talked late into the night and, at some point, returned inside to the couch. They were snuggled up together. Thorin lay on the sofa with her tucked into his side, his arm wrapped around her, and her head resting on his chest. It felt so normal and right. “Of course, we will have a huge ceremony. All dragons will be invited, and I’m assuming you will want to invite your pack at least,” she smiled at his answer to her question. “Do you think your people would accept me as their Queen even though I am a werewolf?” Thorin didn’t hesitate, “They won’t have a choice. You are my fated mate. We strongly believe in the mate bond, and very few dragons choose a mate. Because we have such a long lifespan, we are patient.” Felita thought about that, “What about me? Werewolves don’t live as long as dragons.” Thorin kissed her head, “Oh, you will put up with me for a very long time. When we complete the mate bond, it seals your life span to mine. You will age much more slowly than a normal werewolf.” Felita tensed as she thought about her next question, afraid to ask, but she pushed forward anyway. “What if we don’t complete the mate bond?” Thorin felt her fear of asking, and it bothered him. “You mean if you were to choose him?” Felita nodded, “It would be excruciatingly painful for me to be rejected. I would become so weak that I would not be able to shift. If I survived the rejection, I would be free to choose a mate.” Felita hugged him tightly to her with her arm across his waist. The thought of hurting him deeply took her breath away. “What if I didn’t formally reject you? Then you wouldn’t be hurt.” Thorin tensed at her words, “If you were to complete the mate bond with him but not reject me, then I would suffer every day of my life feeling your emotions.” He didn’t tell her he would also feel whenever she was intimate with Vallin. It was more than he could say; he couldn’t stomach the thought of it, let alone put it into words. “I would rather be rejected and risk death than live every day like that.” Felita decided to change the subject. “Where would we live until you became king?” Thorin ran his fingertips up and down her back as he spoke, “We have many choices. As I do now, we could spend most of our time on my boat. We could live in the palace. I have my own wing there. I also have several homes you could choose from.” Felita shook her head. “I can’t even fathom being so wealthy, and you talk about it as if it is nothing.” Thorin turned slightly, facing her more. “It’s just how I have grown up. Does it bother you that I am the heir to the throne?” Felita thought about her answer, “I don’t know. It’s a lot. Being a queen is not something I ever thought about. I have never doubted that Vallin and I would be together. I’ve spent my entire life expecting to be Luna. Now, I have this whole other life that has become possible. I don’t think it’s fully sunk in yet.” Thorin hummed, “I know it’s different, but I promise you, I would never take you for granted. I’ve prayed for you for so long. I was afraid I would never find you.” Their conversation moved on to other things, and finally, Felita asked him the question he didn’t want to talk about, “Do you want kids? I’m assuming you would want at least one to be the heir.” Thorin licked his lips. “I would love to have kids with you,” was his answer. “How many do we have? I think that would be for us to decide later. However, I have always imagined having a large family. Um, not as large as my parents, though.” Felita laughed silently. “Good. I don’t think I would want that many kids.” She yawned and rubbed her eyes. They were starting to feel dry. Thorin noticed, “Let’s go to bed. We can talk more tomorrow.” He led her to the bedroom and handed her a T-shirt and a pair of his shorts. "Here, you can sleep in these tonight. It will be more comfortable than those jeans. There's a new toothbrush in the bathroom cabinet, too." She took the clothes he offered her and went to the bathroom to change. The shorts were too big, but the T-shirt hung almost to her knees. She decided just to wear it without the shorts. She left them on the back of the toilet, where her clothes were folded. She brushed her teeth and returned to the bedroom, feeling slightly nervous. Vallin had spent the night with her many times, but she always wore pajamas when he was with her. This time, she felt more exposed. Something about Thorin made her more physically aware of him than Vallin did and, in turn, more aware of herself. It wasn't a bad feeling, just new. Not only was she always aware of where he was in relation to herself, but she also wanted to maintain contact with him. A simple touch from him could soothe or ignite her body. She was deep in thought when he turned around to see her in nothing but his shirt and panties. Thorin was sure he was being tested. Why else would the Goddess put her right before him, but make things so complicated that he couldn't claim the one that was supposed to be his? She was beautiful, and it would take everything he had to keep his hands to himself tonight. He cleared his throat, "I'm going to go to the bathroom; I will be right back. Go ahead and get comfortable." Felita gave him a small smile and nodded in acceptance. When he left the room, she slipped under the blankets and scrolled through her phone while waiting for him to join her. A few minutes later, Thorin walked to the other side of the bed. He checked his phone as he stood there, then turned it on to do not disturb, and joined her. He had on a T-shirt and pajama pants, which surprised her. She expected him to sleep in his boxers. She snuggled up to him just as they had been on the couch. "I want to stay up and talk to you all night, but honestly, I'm too tired." Thorin kissed the top of her head, "That's okay. We will have lots more time to get to know each other. Get some sleep, and we can talk more in the morning." Felita nodded; her eyes were already heavy and half closed. Within minutes, she was asleep. It took Thorin longer to fall asleep; he was too wound up from having her in his bed, but he joined her in sleep after a while.
